| asalaamu alaikum, lately, the one big criticism I have been heairng about against Islam has been that most Christian societies and other democratic societies (even Post-Christian ones) allow muslims to worship freely, to express and preach, and to identify themselves. As well, muslims demand their right to practice in certains ituations (ex. schools, workplace, etc.) and they ask: Why isn't it the same for non-muslims in muslim countries? now, i understand that in some muslim countries non-muslims can practice, but i see what these people are tryingto ask... is the suppression of practice equity condoned by Islam? I also know the partial answer to my own question but wanna hear it from other points of view. asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,. |

| Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah Excellent question which we should all research, insha'Allah...here's a preliminary set of articles/links you can use as reference (haven't read every single word yet, so please take with a grain of salt), until someone gives you more info, iA. Unless I'm mistaken, Islam was the first religion to incorporate protection laws for religious minorities into shari'ah. The Prophet (saws) and his companions and righteous khalifahs were very particular about relations with non-Muslims. We've lost that same sense of "justice for all" mentality. Standing up for oppressed Palestinians means standing up for oppressed Tibetans, Rwandans, etc. And protection for Jews and Christians, their faith and their places of worship is a duty stated in both the Qur'aan and Sunnah (mainly dealing with Muslim rule, wAllahu'alim). Islam stands up for the oppressed, Muslims and non-Muslims (I realize "non-Muslim" can be seen as a sign of disrespect or whatever, it's just a shorter term for "Jews, Christians, etc"). Subhan'Allah, even plants and animals are protected under Islamic shar'iah.
