| assalam-o-alaikoum i have to write a message in my yearbook beside my graduating picture. stuff like "thanks to my mom and dad and friends and all that jazz..." i want to write thanks to allah, but i'm afraid that some people will treat the yearbook with disrespect. i mean if i write allah in the yearbook than it has to be kept in the highest state. so can u people tell me something that means allah but isn't one of his 99 names. so i can write that instead. jazakallah walaikoum assalam |

Though the word has nowhere near all the connotations and meaning "Allah" does, using it may solve your problem, and it'll probably be good for daawa as well :) take care :) wasalaamu alaykum. |

| assalam-o-alaikoum but wouldn't god still mean allah just in a different language? and wouldn't ONE mean Allah also? i think i won't mention allah, because i'm afraid people will disrespect the yearbook.... but i don't kno...what do u guys think? i really need to kno by the 1st. jazakallah for ur answers walaikoum assalam |

Also if it's acceptable to give a copy of the Qur'an to non-muslims for da'wah (how else are they supposed to learn about islam) then why would an inscription in a yearbook be different. In my opinion, this a perfect oppurtinity for da'wah, you never know who might read it and be influenced by it :) |

| [slm] I agree with amal. In fact, I would just write "Allah" instead of "God" because "God" has a different connotation for different people. To most christians, "God" means Jesus, not Allah. Wassalamu alaikum. |

[/quote] This is not entirely true, since for most Christians God comprises the three aspects of the trinity which are not separable one from the other. They are: God the father, the son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. Only all three together comprise God because all three are always present. Jesus, then, is both God and a part of God. I have to admit that even though I grew up in a Christian community and my parents are at least nominally Christian, I don't really understand the distinction between the three or how they overlap to make one whole in Christian thought. Not all Christians think this way since there are sects, such as the Unitarians, who deny the validity of the trinity, and others, such as the Nestorians, who deny the divinity of the man Jesus (alayhi salaam), although they do believe in God the son. Again, I'm not sure how these doctrines work and they are one of the main reasons that I started looking into Islam. As for the question at hand, I think that writing Allah in English would not be a problem. Most people take pretty good care of their yearbooks anyway -- I know that mine is still in good shape after many years. wlm |

Himy's Yearbook inscription: [i]When I'm rich and famous and have forgotten all about you, you can sell this yearbook with my signature and make a lot of a money!!![/i] (signed) ~ HiMY! ~ As for Christians using 'God' to mean 'Jesus' (son of Mary, pbut) I learned that saying 'God-Alone' to Christians gets two thoughts in their mind: First that God is indeed ALONE and ONE; Second, even if they ascribe to trinitarian beliefs, the Title 'God-Alone' cannot mean 'Jesus'. Plus 'Al' in Arabic means 'The' so in HiMYLanguage 'AL' + 'ONE' = "The One". [grin]You like that one eh!?[/grin] ~ HiMY! ~ |
