I am a born again atheist who defends peoples right to follow any religion of their choice. I also know that faith has an important role to play in any society. I an disgusted by the ammount of anti-islamic feeling that I witness during my time in the city that I go to daily. I go to Liverpool most days as I am studying law at university. I am 40 years old and hoped that teh yopunger generation would be more tolerant than my own , how wrong I was. I shudder at the thought that those whose opinions on Moslems, Sikhs, in fact anyone who has a different belief system top thier own, will soon be representing clients who will come from all walks of life. How can they represent people that they appear to hate even though they have not even bothered to understand where people are coming from. I had thought that those that choose to attend university would be open minded and at least study teh facts before coming to an opinion. This narrow mindedness is not only present in university. I am an afficianado of world music and attended this year's WOMAD festival in the UK. whilst there I purchased a beautiful multi coloured hat of teh type often worn by people from the Indian sub-continent. I have been sworn at called a traitor asked whose*** side am I on? ( to which the reply was not ****yours that's for sure. I cannot even begin to comprehend how it must be for Moslems in the UK at the moment but I know from a Muslim cleric friend of mine that he has been spat on in teh street whilst walking his children home from school and he has had to endure people swearing and saying the most offensive things to his children whilst he is with them. I am very pessimistic as to teh future of race relations in the UK and it appears to me that September the 11th has provided people with an excuse to behave in a way that can only be described as racist. It seems that you only need to scratch teh surface of a society's skin and racisim comes to the surface. Anyway enough of my angry rantings I will sign off by saying not all white British citizens ( I prefer to be seen as Welsh rather than British)are anti-islamic and thankfully all of teh people that I choose to call friends can see past the tabloid newspaper headlines. Be strong and may peace be upon you whatever your faith. foxy |
