how to halaqah

salaamualaikum sisters,

I had a brief question.  I have about 4-5 sisters who are interested in
starting up a study circle in my community.  With a small number like
this what exactly can we do?  Should we have one sister lead the group
on a particular topic or have an open discussion every week?  And what
should we talk about? any ideas?!? :)

jazakallah

From my experience, it works out best if the sisters pick something to read or a topic to study, and then discuss it as a group with one person leading the discussion.  Usually if we have open discussions where no one has read up on the topic from before, people start giving out opinions which don't have basis in knowledge.

If you have just one person speaking, and the rest listening to her without having prepared, you'll probably end up with passive listeners.  And unless that one speaker is really good, the others will probably soon loose interest.

This article has some good advice:On the Way to Attend Study-Sessions

For topics, think about the areas of knowledge you lack in and what areas you need improvement in.

Hope this helps,

As salamu alaykum Sister,

You should sit down and discuss a format that you all agree with and that you are capable of doing.  Some suggestions are Seerah (The Sealed Nectar), Fiqh us Sunnah, Tafseer and maybe excerts from a book. It all depends on what you want to focus on. Insha'Allah your group will learn a lot.

As salamu alaykum
