Physical damage caused by heavy gunfire, shelling from tanks and missiles fired from helicopter gunships are extensive. Within the last 48 hours, the Nativity Church and the Holy Family maternity hospital and orphanage in Bethlehem have been hit by Israeli fire, endangering the lives of the 60 children sleeping in the orphanage. This morning, Israeli occupation forces raided the village of Beit Rima, northwest of Ramallah. Noted Palestinian human rights organization, LAW, Israeli attack helicopters shelled the village indiscriminately, 17 tanks and more than 900 Israeli soldiers, surrounded the village and enforced a siege, preventing residents from leaving their homes. For six days Bethlehemâm’s 'Aida and 'Azza / Beit Jibrin camps, which provide shelter to more than 5,000 refugees, have been under total siege. Most of the water tanks in both camps have been destroyed leaving residents without water for the past six days. Residents have also been without electricity since Israeli military forces invaded the city on October 18th, and have run out of food and milk. From the time he came to power, Sharon has killed 750 Palestinians, wounded over 35,000 Palestinians, demolished more than 4,000 homes and uprooted close to 200,000 fruit trees. The time has come for the America to back up its words with actions. Israeli officials have arrogantly vowed to continue the campaign of assassinations and to remain in Palestinian cities. State Department reprimands are not enough. Israeli intransigence should come with a price. America should not allow Israel to reject American calls for withdrawal, while it uses American weapons to maintain its siege on Palestinian civilian populations. Yours truly, (name) |
