If someone has to make an early exit from prayer due to some need, lets say someone is knocking at the door and its raining heavy outside, how do you come out of the prayer?

Bismillah and salam,
I think you have to keep facing the qibla while you go to open the door, even if it means you walk backwards. I think the prophet saws did this once he knew it is safe coz Aisha said it is her, he walked there and back facing qibla to open the door for her then he continued praying.

I always thought you do tasleem in whatever position you're in, even standing, and stop the prayer.  Then after that you repeat the prayer.  Allahu a'lam.  Have I always been wrong?

M.F. i was of the same opinion as you, but i don't recall where i got that from.

The reason i ask was of this particularly embarrassing event a few weeks ago. I'd gone to listen to a lecture in a new masjid, and before sitting down i prayed the two rak'aat, as you do.

Unfortunately, i was praying in completely the opposite direction to the Qibla. I could sense from the brothers that i was facing the wrong direction, but no one came forward to turn me in the right direction so i had to break out and then ask someone which way to face.

Hmmm, Kashif what were the brothers supposed to do while you were praying in the wrong direction?  I was just wondering how they were supposed to go about correcting you.

To correct your position, the brothers should have come up behind you and turned you by the shoulders or something towards the right direction.

Yep, M.F. i'm with you again. If i find a brother praying in the wrong direction i take his shoulders from behind and turn him in the right direction.

Once at one of our annual dinners ther were several brothers praying in the wrong direction, and i just spoke in a loud voice tellin ghtem to turn 45 degrees to their right, and they did so.

Actually I was wondering about if it was more then 1 brother praying in the wrong direction? ???  I ran into a situation where I prayed maghrib and then came back after 20 minutes, because I thought I forgot something there and saw some brothers praying exactly 180 degrees of what I did.  But I didn't say anything because at that time there was some huge controversy about which way the Qiblah was, some people were praying it towards the east while some were praying it towards the west (claiming the west way was the shortest way), it was weird.  So I thought maybe these guys were the west people.  ALlahu alam.

asalaamu alaikum,
so does anyone have a referenced answer as to the EARLY EXIT question?

And what about it someone is calling you, or something like that, can you say "salaam" or "hold on" or some short coment like "I'm praying"...?

I know one way to tell someone your praying might be to just make your voice louder so they get the hint. asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

salam,

i was always taught never to interupt my prayer because there is a bond between you and Allah(SWT) that is much more important than answering the door, or someone calling your etc.....

hmm maybe we should go to our local imams and see what they say...

wasalam,
nouha:)

Question
They were praying one of the prayers at home when the telephone started to ring, and it distracted them with its ringing for a long time. Is it permissible in such cases for the worshipper to take a few steps forwards or backwards and pick up the receiver and say “Allaahu akbar” or raise his voice in recitation so that the caller will know that he is praying – by analogy with (the hadeeth with speaks of) opening the door to one who knocks or raising his voice so that he can hear you?

Answer from Sheikh Munajidd
Praise be to Allaah.

If the worshipper is in the position that you describe and the phone starts ringing, it is permissible for him to lift the receiver, even if he has to move a little way forward or back, or to the right or left, on the condition that he keeps facing the qiblah and he says ‘Subhaan Allaah’ so that the person who is calling will know (that he is praying). It was narrated in al-Saheehayn that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray whilst carrying his granddaughter Umaamah. When he did rukoo’, he would put her down, and when he stood up he would pick her up again. According to a report in Muslim, this was when he was leading the people in prayer in the mosque. (Narrated by Maalik, 1/170; al-Bukhaari, 1/487, in Sutrat al-Musalli, Baab idha hamala jaariyatan sagheeratan ‘ala ‘unuqihi; Muslim, 543, in al-Masaajid, Baab jawaaz Hamal al-Subyaan; Abu Dawood, no. 917-920; al-Nasaa’i, 2/45).

Ahmad and others narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was praying in his house with the door closed.  I came (to the door) and he walked over and opened the door for me, then he went back to his place.” She mentioned that the door was in the direction of the Qiblah. (Narrated by Ahmad, 6/31; Abu Dawood, 922; al-Nasaa’i, 1/178; al-Tirmidhi, 2/497).

Al-Bukhaari and Muslim narrated that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever notices something alarming whilst praying, then men should say ‘Subhaan Allaah’ and women should clap their hands.”

And Allaah is the Source of strength. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions, and grant them peace.
