Forced Conversion

asalaamu alaikum,

Guys, I have some questions that just popped into my head... and I don't know how to answer them...

We say Islam ideally has no forced conversion...

and yet in many instances it says that if the defeated kaffir population in a war submits and perform iqaamat as-salaat, then they are forgiven.

I am assuming that is accepting Islam... but doesn't the choice become convert, or die?

I would say that's a pretty compelling choice...

After all, in the same sense forced conversion would be convert or leave or die right?

And as well, we can't deny that it hasn't happened in later years (forced conversion), I have heard personal accounts about it...

And then it comes to the question about compulsion in religion...

See, I ask questions from a outiside perspectives... I would hate for a non-muslim to be turned off from th etruth of Islam because of my lack of knowledge and inability to answer these questions...

At the same time, I don't want to beg a positive answer... or have it soft-peddled (as I once heard soemone say). And I hate questioning... but it is necessary to stay educated, to discern and not judge, and  to stay on the right path I believe.

What do you all think? asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

There aren't any forced conversions in Islam.  Convert or die? ???  This question isn't being asked from an outside perspective its being asked from those missionary websites, by people i have had lengthy discussions with in the past, and who have tried to give their own interpretation to verses (without even understanding the context in which those verses apply or the actual language).

Fortunately there are websites out there now (by Muslims I have talked to in the past) that answer these people, such islamic-awareness, and answering for islam, answering christianity, etc (exact URLs were provided in an earlier posting).

Do you have a tafsir (explanation) of the Quran?  I HIGHLY recommend you buy Ibn Kathir's Tafsir (recently released in English a year or two ago), its about $150 from islamicbookstore.com and it can answer many of the questions you maybe having.

[/quote]Where does it say that?

And what does this have to do with "convert or die?"

The "convert or die" concept is alien to Islam.  The Qur'an is emphatically clear about this.  Laa ikraaha fid Deen.  There is no compulsion in religion.  Period.

When an opposing army is defeated, their people are to live under Islamic rule peacefully as long as they pay the jizyah (tax).  If they accept Islam then they are not required to pay the jizyah.

By the way, the jizyah amount is *less* than the amount of zakaah that a Muslim must pay.  And in some cases, jizyah can be waived depending on the financial situation of the non-Muslim living in the Islamic state.

Wassalamu alaikum.

Er no. the people don't have to convert. Although it would be better for em, they would be treated like brothers otherwise just pay the zijyah. And the zijyah is returnable under certain conditions as well.
