Uzbek woman goes on trial for membership of Hizb-ut-Tahrir

Text of report by banned Uzbek opposition Birlik web site on 31 October

The Shaykhontokhur district court of the city of Tashkent under the chairmanship of judge
                     M. Mirzohidov started the trial of Fotima Mirkhodiyeva on 30 October. The woman was
arrested on 4 September when she was on her way to the city administration building
where she intended to demand an end to the violence against her children.

                     F. Mirkhodiyeva, two children of whom were sentenced to 20 years in prison, never
concealed her displeasure with that injustice and was several times administratively
detained from three to 30 days previously and was put on the Interior Ministry black list.

When 20 armed policemen burst into her home and searched it they discovered 13
Hizb-ut-Tahrir leaflets and No 27, 28, 29, 30 editions of the Harakat magazine. When the
judge asked her whether "the literature found belonged to her", she said: "Of course, they
are all mine and I will never give up reading them."

                     M. Mirzohidov will hardly dare to acquit and release in the court-room this Muslim woman
who was accused of attempting to change the state system in violation of the constitution
and of being a member of the Hizb ut-Tahrir party. Because the judge also has a family and
                     children.
