Best time for da'wah!

I had a very eye-opening experience today!

Our MSA usually does an Islam 101 class on campus every other week where a Muslim student presents a topic to a room full of non-Muslims for 30 minutes.  The presentation is followed by a Q/A session.  After that, we try to have the non-Muslims talk one-on-one with the Muslims in the audience.

This semester, Sep. 11 put a halt to our regular Islam 101 sessions.  We felt we would get a lot of hostile questions, and stuck to guest speakers who came and gave a couple of lectures to the student body on campus.  Now, since a couple of months have already passed by, and the anger has subsided a little bit (compared to Sep. 12 I mean!) we decided to continue our sessions.

We had our first session today.

We usually get about 10 non-Muslims to come to these classes (if we're lucky --- this is a very conservtive, christian campus).  So we had a room reserved which could hold 30 people.

60 non-Muslims showed up today!!!

A few Muslims that we have *never* seen before showed up as well.

We had to pull extra chairs from the adjacent rooms.  The room was packed.  A lot of people had to sit on the floor.  Some people who came late had to just turn around and leave because there was no space!!!

The program was supposed to go for an hour.  It went for 2 hours!  There was a *lot* of discussion.  No hostility.  Just questions that people have about Islam in general.  Not necessarily about Bin Laden, or the Taleban, or Sep. 11.  Islam, in general.

People, this is the best time to make da'wah.  Get your MSA to do stuff on campuses.  Something.  Anything!  As much as you can.  Even if it be a da'wah table once every week!  If you do a lecture or a class, it doesn't matter what the topic is.  It doesn't matter how badly you publicize!  It doesn't matter what you put on the flier.  As long as the flier says "Islam", and has a time and place for the event, trust me, people will come!

Islam is the biggest hype of the year right now.  Don't let this opportunity slip away ...

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.

P.S. The title of our program today was "Who is Allah?"  Next week will be "What is the Qur'an?"

salam,

agreed 100% Arsalan,  in all the events that have been taking place in my college about islam, sooooo much more people came than what was expected, and like you said it was mainly about Islam in general,

since i and one another girl in the campus are the only hijabis of the school, they just run up to us and start to ask more questions when the lecture, presentation etc is over,

subhanallah it gives me this really warm feeling inside :)

Salamu alaikum

I think the best to make daawa is when a non muslim asks you a
question.

Anonymous, you're absolutely right.  And this is why I say that this is the best time to make da'wah, because you have a lot more people asking you questions about Islam than ever before.

By the way, we really need to become more systematic in our da'wah efforts.  I'm sure many of you are doing many da'wah activities, whether on campus or in churches or at work.  Learn from your experiences, and share what you have learned with others in your community.  If there a few questions that keep coming up, make a bank of such questions with good answers.

Also, if you are doing anything with churches, I would strongly recommend that you brush up on your bible stuff.  You don't want to be talking about the bible with a chrisitan, unless he/she brings it up and seems to be a hard-core/born-again/missionary type christian.  But in case it is brought up, you want to be able to show him that you know what you're talking about.  You may also want to look into what the differences are between various denominations in christianity, and which ones have what in common with Islam. (ex. presbyterians and the concept of qadaa wal qadr, etc).

Wassalamu alaikum.

Yeah. I started MSA at our campus last year and there was not a lot of interest from the Muslim students. I was dissapointed. This year a lot of Muslims showed up, people I have seen but didn't know that they were Muslims! It felt good to pray in a big jamat.

We had a lot of non muslims interested in learning about Isalm as well too, more than usual.

I think if the MSA is actively involved in the community and does fun things, people are naturally going to want to join.  The MSA I went to when I was in college, just collected membership dues, and had 1 or 2 dinners (or maybe that was the Pakistani group that had the dinners), but that was it.

The MSA at my former university seems to be much more active now, one brother has prepared a book outlining what Islam is, and it has some website addresses.  They charge $1 for the book to Muslims (to cover the costs of printing) and they try and give it out free to non-Muslims if their budget can meet this.
