The Munafiqun from the north have taken mazar e sharif.  Let the chaos and anarchy begin

Afghans let their hair down in Mazar
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Afghans queued at barber shops to shave their beards, music blared from shops and women threw off the head-to-toe burqa veil as the first city taken from the Taliban escaped their draconian rules, the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) has reported.

The entry of opposition Northern Alliance forces late on Friday ended the grip of the feared Ministry of the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice -- better known as the religious police -- whose job was to implement harsh rules regarded by the Taliban as embodying the purest form of Islam.

In streets patrolled now by uniformed Northern Alliance fighters, men with beards they have not been allowed to trim for years lined up to shave them off, the Pakistan-based AIP said.

The strains of music played from shops, which were previously only allowed to sell religious chants or martial songs, AIP quoted residents of the city as saying.

Under the Taliban, a man who trimmed his beard could face arrest and several weeks in jail while his beard grew back.

The playing of music brought the penalty of a public lashing, audio cassettes were smashed and the tapes fluttered from telegraph posts in most cities.

In Mazar-i-Sharif on Sunday, songs accompanied by the long-banned instrumentalist backing were playing in restaurants and shops, AIP said.

The Taliban had banned music, deeming it un-Islamic and vulgar and not in keeping with their ideal of setting up the world's purest Muslim state based on a 1,300-year-old Islamic Utopia.

WOMEN COME OUT

Women began to appear on the streets without the concealment of the all-enveloping burqa mandated by the Taliban, AIP said.

But many residents were apprehensive that members of the majority ethnic Pashtun tribe could face reprisals from the Northern Alliance -- composed mainly of minority Uzbeks and Tajiks, AIP said.

The Taliban rules had included bans on lipstick, television, neckties, playing cards and music -- other than religious songs and chants.

But even in the southern city of Kandahar, powerbase of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, a sight unseen for more than five years had appeared on the streets in recent weeks -- shops selling music cassettes and even CDs.

Witnesses say the religious police have virtually disappeared there after the ministry building in Kandahar was the target of several U.S. bombs last month.

Television and photographs are banned as part of the Taliban's campaign to create its pure Muslim state. Under that system, iconography is banned and reproduction of images of people and animals falls into that category.

The Taliban believe their rules are based on Islam, but they often seem more rooted in traditions of the Pashtun tribes where the movement finds its main strength.

A ban on Western dress and a demand that men -- even schoolboys -- wear turbans has been justified as a tradition of Mohammad.

The Russians took many towns and cities when they started their campaign. They controlled all of Afghanistan. The Afghans moved to the mountains for guerilla warfare. 10 years later the russians were humiliated, and with their heads bowed, they shamefully left the land of the Afghans. Certain commaders sided with the russians. They have now returened under the guise of the Northern Alliance.

Inshallah the same fate will befall the northern Alliance. Once the Taliban regroup, and redeploy, the Coalition will once again face humiliation, Inshallah.

It will take a long time, but one day inshallah America shall be humiliatingly defeated.

Muslims, do not be discouraged by the fall of Mazar. It didnt fall, it was given away. The Taliban pulled thier forces out to regroup. They shall return.

And Islaam shall once again prevail. The land of Afganistan has been blessed by Allah as a land that the kuffar and thier allies shall never conquer above islaam.

And a big thank you to the Pakistani Intelligence and to the Pakistani people for smuggling in massive amounts of ammunition and weapons in the past 3 weeks.

Islaam shall prevail.

Remember the Taliban and the innocents in your du'as, and that the N. Alliance wake up from their naivety.

Yes, the Afghans beat back the Russians after ten years, but the Russians lost 50,000 and the Afgnas lost closer to a million!

You say the russians lost 50'000, and the muslims 1 million, BUT these million died in Jihad, they were Shaheed, they would have entered paradise. If they didnt fight, they would have come under control of the Kaafirs. 1 million dead, dead on earth, alive and well in paradise :)

two things about the figures. firstly the 1 million is not only the mujahideen, but also includes the kaffar fighting for the russians. secondly the russian figures cant be trusted  cause they always lie about the number of deaths they sustain. many parents of those killed were lied to, and told their sons died in training in russia when they had died in afghanistan.
in most jihads the mujahideen kill a lot more kaffar  soldiers then the kaffar kill mujahideen. but the problem is the kaffar compensate by killing civilians so over all figures are changed.
if russia had of won the casualties on the Muslim side would have been much higher. cause then the russians would have had a free hand in wiping every one out.

Reports of the celebrations, burqa and beard shedding, Hindi Music, women, films on display are starting to turn me into a bigger supporter of the Taliban than I ever was.

I guess the reports are somewhat exaggerated, though.

If this is what a free modern state is, it makes the Taliban look really good. Why is it they always equate what is haram with what is fun? And, shouldn't many of these people partying in the street be more concerned about how they're going to get through the winter?

One of the interesting things is that the N. Alliance isn't exactly a unified force. What i mean is that it is Rabbani's gang who has taken Kabul, the shi'a of Dostum who have taken Mazar-i-Sharif, etc. All that united them seems to be the fact that they had a common enemy. With news that some of the Hazara shi'a are now heading towards Kabul the next few months will show us exactly how unified this N. Alliance is.
One brother wrote, "So I think the situation is going to become more unstable, and Allah knows best. (nb. the Hazaras are the shia descendants of the mongols).  I suspect 6 months down the road from now when opium production doubles and strife and bloodletting reappear people will look back at the Taliban rule as a period of peace and security, and Allah knows best."

May Allah keep the innocents of the Afghanistan safe from whatever may befall the country, ameen. May Allah give victory to His people and defeat to those who fight them, ameen.

On another note, a brother pointed out that there were some lessons to learn from the events happening in Kabul after the Taliban's departure. Perhaps the next time round, the Taliban won't impose such a 'strict' form of Islam. 'Strict' for example, all women had to wear burqa these past 5 years. Well, there is an equally legitimate opinion that says that they don't have to cover their faces, etc. Perhaps next time round the enforcement of the shari'a can encompass leeway for the citizens enough that it reflects the differences between the four main madhaahib of Islam.

What I learned from all this is to never doubt the word of a practicing muslim.  The Taliban for years asked for help, they said they were working to implement the shariah and that in due time when the curriculums were updated and free of communist propaganda the girls schools would reopen, they asked for help from the leading ulama and wealthy muslims, who ignored them.  The Taliban themselves said they weren't educated in worldly matters.  They also said they brought peace and security to Afghanistan, they outlawed poppy cultivation, crime was reduced to insignificant numbers, and the masajid were packed.  Their intention in withdrawing from the towns was to spare the people any more bombing and to regroup, a good deed as we all know civilians were the true targets.  So now that jahiliyah has been brought back, where are all the anti-Taliban voices?  This is what you wanted right?

I think this is partly why so many Afghans are rejoicing at Talibans demise - they have a sense of freedom. For years the people of afganhistan have suffered enduring hardship from war, poverty, famine and Talibans restrictions. Now with Taliban gone, they are free to move around - for people that have suffered so much, any form of breathing space is much welcomed, thus their celebrations. This current euphoria which we're witnessing is a knee jerk reaction. How long it lasts under the rag-tag NA dogs, only Allah knows. It doesn't necessary mean they will fall into a jahil way of life. Islam cannot be imposed on people, but must come from within.

Once this honeymoon period for the citizens of Kabul is over, only time will tell if Islam will flourish from within the hearts of the Afghan people.
