Northern Alliance Breaks Taliban Lines North of Kabul

KALAI NASRO, Afghanistan, Nov. 12 — Northern Alliance forces easily pierced Taliban lines north of Kabul today and advanced to within 10 miles of the Afghan capital, setting the stage for a possibly bloody entry into the city.
Minutes after breaking Taliban lines, alliance soldiers executed four Taliban soldiers here, brazenly shooting one wounded man at point-blank range as two journalists watched. They also feverishly looted Taliban bodies and bunkers, stealing shoes, bags of sugar, flashlights and anything they could pillage.

"I got $700,000 Afghani!" a grinning soldier leaving an abandoned Taliban bunker proudly shouted, flashing a wad of bills worth roughly $20. "I got 700,000!"

The Northern Alliance's speedy advance here came as their forces seized the city of Herat in western Afghanistan and Taliban lines appeared to be crumbling across the country.

But the alliance's string of victories — it now controls 40 percent of the country — could quickly lead to a confrontation with the United States over Kabul. Alliance leaders have reached an agreement with American officials that their forces will not enter the city. But alliance officials have said they may send specially trained police units to the capitol if there is a power vacuum.

Events here today suggested that alliance soldiers could be difficult to control. The looting and executions were an ugly ending to what began as a well-executed tank and infantry assault. Alliance forces broached Taliban lines here near the Bagram Air Base and the village of Khalazai on the western edge of the front line. Taliban lines broke after a two-hour bombardment and an hourlong tank and infantry attack. Alliance forces suffered surprisingly few casualties, with one soldier killed and eight wounded in the fighting near Bagram.

Problems began after alliance soldiers surged deep into Taliban territory and began giddily celebrating their victory. Near one abandoned bunker, a photographer watched as several alliance soldiers dragged a wounded Taliban soldier out of a ditch. As the terrified man begged for his life, the alliance soldiers dragged him to his feet. They searched the Taliban soldier, a stocky man in his forties with dark hair and a thick, long beard, and emptied his pockets. As another journalist walked towards them, one of the soldiers fired two bursts from his assault rifle into the man's chest. A second soldier beat his lifeless body with his rifle butt.

A third repeatedly smashed a rocket propelled grenade into the man's head.

Ten yards away lay the body of a younger man, who alliance soldiers said was a Pakistani. He had a bullet hole in the side of his head. Two hundred yards away, several soldiers rifled through the pockets of a motionless Taliban soldier lying on the ground. One of the soldiers fired several rounds into him. A fourth body of a Taliban soldier seen a mile away had a bullet wound in the side of his head.
