Assalamu alaikum My name is Mariam, I'm 24, and I'm a Madinaholic!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it happened to me.  At first, it was just once or twice a week, I'd just browse through and see what was happening.  Then, it became a daily habit. Now, I can't get through the day without checking every forum and seeing what's going on with all my brothers and sisters!!!  On weekends when I'm not at work and can't get online, I think about the time when I can go back to my Madina... As you know, I've even dreamed about some people on the board!  I talk to my husband about everyone and tell him what's going on.  He probably thinks I'm nuts although he humors me.  I wouldn't be surprised if he does an intervention for me pretty soon!! Has this happened to you??? Help me!  :) :) :) :) :D

[/quote] Not much ;) I work at this Fulbright office in Rabat (Morocco) that gives grants to Americans who want to do research in Morocco and Moroccans who want to do a degree or something in America.  I personally am working (not very hard) on the newsletter right now.  I'm actually just an intern. Barr, it's not healthy to be in denial.  Get help!!! Believe me, you'll feel much better when you admit that you have a problem, although I know it doesn't feel like one :)  :)

The first thing is acceptance. Then you can go onto the next stage of not caring anymore. Well Mariam, I don't know how long you've been a member here. I always assumed you were here before me and that you had already done an intro' and were one of these members who post now and again but not so frequently. The thing that interested me about you was your name - Fitzgerald. There are a lot of Fitzgeralds in Ireland. What nationality are you and did you convert to Islam? Is Fitzgerald your maiden name then? Of course you didn't have to change it on marrying..so probably it is your maiden name. Well is Mariam your original name too? Or if you converted did you change your name? All these questions have been going around in my head about you ever since I first saw your name somewhere on the board.. So of course to my hubby and his family and everyone I know, and to all non-sahraouis and most sahraouis, there's no doubt in their minds that the Sahara belongs to Morocco, that's all there is to it.  In fact the king recently went to parts of Morocco (that aren't really recognized as parts of Morocco by many countries) so that everyone could see how attached the people are to him... except he abruptly ended his tour due to "bad weather" :)  Anyway, I don't think that sahraouis would have much of a future if they were autonomous.  It's desert down there, there's nothing for them to live on, except what Algeria gives them. [/quote] There's all shades of Islam here in Morocco, from 0 to 200%.  Al hamdu lillah there's a lot of freedom to practice Islam compared to Tunisia for example, where you can't find a job if you wear hijab for example.  Don't get me wrong, it's extremely difficult to get a job if you wear hijab (unless you know someone, like I did, or start wearing it after you get the job :))I've also noticed that more and more women are wearing hijab al hamdu lillah.   There's also all sorts of groups from sufis to salafis and everything else too.  I think you can find anything you're looking for here, although the official madhab is Maliki. ... I was going on and on and I just erased what I was writing cause it was really too much :)  if you want to know more I'd be happy to tell you insha Allah :) Eleanor, I never really did an intro.  Here's the short version: My parents are American Muslims who made hijra to Morocco before I was born, and they've been here ever since.  Mariam is my original name (although I changed the spelling from Meriem).  Fitzgerald's my grandad's name, he is from Ireland.  My parents live in Marrakech. My dad runs an English language school and he's hired quite a few American Muslims there.  My hubby and I live in Rabat.  He works for Microsoft Morocco, not my favorite company but...it's a job.   I guess that's my story :-)

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-) Call yourself addicts? A real addict is one who tries to figure out why Sr Mariam's username never appears at the bottom of the page when she's on ??? As for as I'm aware she's the only Madinian which this happens to! Now that's what I call addiction!!! ;-) Is there any explanation for this or is this some extra security measure of which I was unaware? ;-)

News at 8, MediaCorp Suria Channel Singapore, Tuesday - The police have reported that the person reported as missing, classified as Barr, has been found.  She was first reported missing by her anxious parents after they discovered that she did not return home from her Eid visits. Initial investigations revealed that her friend, Solehah, noticed that Barr was unusually silent during their conversation last Saturday, muttering " Madinat Madinat " intemittently. Police spokesman said that Barr was found huddled at a computer in an internet cafe with the Madinat Message Board on the screen. Police are still investigating the matter.  Barr is now receiving treatment at the National Psychiatric Unit. PS Eleanor I am saving u while u are off the puter. U owe me one.

Needless to say, my SMS was followed by a smart reply from Barr: "Check out the Bebsi Stand..Muahahahaha" which sent shivers down my spine. I have to admit, she got me goooood ;-D Hey! I never saw that reply above about me oul sheepdog.. I was wondering why Lassie never came home..harrumph!! Gonna have to get me a new dawg now. Sister Barr, for your information, I only had about 2.5 days of Cold Turkey, and it was a combined withdrawal from Madinat and the Sims. heh heh ;-D Twas good to break the habit though, mind you I've now gone into depression at the number of new posts that I *have* to read. Sis Eleanor..as you can see even on mobile phones Sis Barr must make references to Madinat.  I am truly truly worried abt her.  She has proven to be more difficult to help than I originally foresee. This calls for a worldwide conference to battle Madinatism.  Of course the great food and great people we will meet is an added bonus for the conference :-)
