Rahman Knocked out, he deserved it.

Assalaamu-alaikum

So did anyone see the Lewis Vs Rahman Boxing rematch last night?

Bro Hasim Rahman got knocked out in the 4th round, and as much as i supported him in the past, i must say he deserved it, and when he got ko'd, i got a strange feeling of satisfaction seeing him flat on his back, why? Well i'll tell you why. I think his behaviour in the build up to this fight was simply disgraceful. If anyone saw it, then you would feel the same.

He is a muslim, he won the world title, he became a hero. He had the PERFECT platform to give dawah, to make people more aware of islaam, especially in a time like this, to show how decent muslims really are. Instead what does he do? He decides to behave in a disgraceful, disrespectful way towards a decent guy like Lewis. He would openly try and humiliate Lennox Lewis at press conferences, he would insult Lewis, he would challenege him to fights at these meetings, he was simply a disgrace. You had to have seen it just to realise what i am talking about. As a muslim he should have known better, he should have behaved as a muslim, he should have been humble, polite, warm, welcoming and likable. But instead he was arrogant, rude, abusive, loud and just a plain idiot. I became a big fan after he defeat lewis, but in a past 2 or 3 weeks he has shown his true colours and i was embarrassed to have once admired this guy.

And people like him get what they deserved. Lewis, although i aint a fan of his, has never shown a guy such disrespect. He is a decent, clean living, quiet type of guy and Rahmans behaviour towards him was way out of order. I felt sorry at the way lewis, a good dignified champion, was being humiliated by this so called "practising muslim". And when he was knocked out by Lewis, i thought to myself immediatly "you deserved that".

And after the fight, Rahman was humbled. No more loud mouth, no more abusive aggresive language, just a humble humiliated response of "he's a good fighter".

I dont like seeing muslims get beaten like that, but when they behave the way Rahman did, i have no sympathy towards them. To earn respect, you must show respect. Thats a lesson rahman would have done well to have learnt. He had his moment of glory. Now its gone. And i doubt many people will be sad to see his defeat. He could have been remebered as a hero, instead he will be remebered as a loud mouthed rude, offensive MUSLIM.

asalaamu alaikum,

i agree much with Br. Mujahid that muslims in public light have a responsbility to project true Islam to the society

at the same time, we shouldn't cringe when a muslim loses, or is hit, or whatever because they choose to engage in that sport, and losing and wiining is all part of the game.

In fact, it's a shaky dawah opportunity because of the atmosphere surrounding non-Olympic boxing- threats, intimidation, the crowd mentality (in terms of the fitnah of the event), and so on.

Although it's good for muslims to be seeing role models in sports figures, i think we should analyse exactly what the sports is about and is popularly seen as.

In another sense, Br. Rahman is our brother in Islam, and thus we can't really judge him while he does his work. asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

this reminds me of the video of the interview with Yusuf Islam.  He was asked why he didn't continue singing and use it to promote Islam...he simply said that he didn't want to sing on the public stage because Muslims aren't supposed to show-off and be idolised.  He also didn't want to go out and promote Islam when he hadn't fully learnt about it.

anyone else seen that interview??

wasalaam,

My sentiments exactly.  I saw that ESPN wrestling match and I was like "what is he doing?"  Then I was reading his comments and he came off real arrogant, and we all know Allah does not like arrogance.  Amongst the brothers we were all rooting for him, but we also had a feeling this would happen, because of his conduct.  This reminds me of an interview I read once about Muhammad Ali, and the reporter asked him how he felt about having Parkinson's, and Muhammad answered something like "When I used to box, I always said I was the greatest, so Allah humbled me to show that he is the greatest"

Regarding his awrah, it depends on which school of thought you follow.
