This question is worth 5 points

1.)  As your probably know, there has been a tremendous amount of interest in Islam since the tragedy of September 11th, people are asking about Islam and are curious, its amazing.  I think its good if we each had some brief prepared responses we could provide to non-Muslims.   In 50 to 250 words please explain what Islam is.

2 points

2.)  What is your favorite surah (or one of your favorite surahs, in may have been something you heard last night at the tarawih prayers) in the Quran and why?  Try and convince the members of the Madina.   If possible try and relate something personal that happened to you or affected to you and this surah opened your eyes.

3 points

*BONUS QUESTION*  This is worth 1 point and will be awarded to only 1 person.  Whoever provides the best answer for #2 will get this bonus point.  (So now you have some incentive to actually try hard on this question)

Arshad, what is the word limit for question 2?
Reason being anyone could spend hours on it and write an extended essay scooping up all the points if they decide to relate it to a life event which could end up being an autobiography. In contrast, someone else may not have an event to relate it to, but rather was captivated by a surah so thereby would have a shorter and a possibly not so 'dramatic' answer. A word limit would make it more thought provoking and a better learning experience for participants as there are fewer words to play around with so one has to be specific.

I'm not sure if i explained that well but hope you got the point :)

As salamu alaykum,

How about in a thousand words or less?

As salamu alaykum
Marcie

Ps.  It is not always the amount that counts, but the quality.  Haven't you known any people that are good at fluff?

I was going to make the question due this Sunday, but I should have told you guys a few more days in advance.  So let's make it Saturday, December 1st, 11:59 pm.

As for the number of words for part 2, I left it open, just try and not write a novel. :)  As Marcie said, its the quality that counts.

Hee hee...

Don't worry... our spelling always make people confused....

Since there is no consenant for 'ain in Malay, we tend to spell 'ain with a "k" instead of an apostraphe.

So... da'wah becomes dakwah, ya'ni becomes yakni, mu'min becomes mukmin....

strange thing is... we spell da'i as dai... probably becoz, daki (pronounced as dakee) means scum or the dirt that comes out when you scrub your body in Malay or to go up a hill/mountain.....

let me speak to the linguist ;) Maybe, they'll do another revamp of the spelling.... well... maybe not....

Allahu'alam... :-)

P.S. We used to write using Arabic letters like Urdu... before someone decided to use Romanised letters instead. Don't ask me why.

But Mu'min is not spelled with a 'ain, it's a hamza. In the phonetic alphabet a hamza looks like a question mark.  That would make it    Mu?min.
I've seen people transcribe the 'ain as a 3 cause it looks like a backwards 'ain

Whoopsy daisy!

Sorry... my mistake... Me and Sister Solehah were laughing abt it in the car.

Verily, I am fasting :)

Wassalam :-)

P.S. I mean... The light ha (in Alhamdulillah) and the heavy Ha (in huda) in Roman letters? Bound to create confusion too ;-D  Excuses, excuses, excuses ;-D Thanx for the correction, though :)

I was just wondering if anyone would have a problem with delaying the due date of Qu 3 until Sunday Jan 13th?  Its just that I'm going away on holiday soon.

otherwise is that rule where you can drop your lowest score been incorporated into the game?

Ok, here's what I have decided to do, for those of you going somewhere (and it has to be at least 7 days, if its only a 2 or 3 day trip or anything less then 7 days, that doesn't count), just send an email to me at

arshad@jannah.org with the dates you will be gone.

if a question was posted on the board while you were away, i will insha'Allah email it to you.  you agree to answer the question (within 3 days of getting back) and email it back to me BEFORE you visit the board again.

;--------------------

Nehar, just message me your answers for the quizz, ill insha'Allah put up the quiz answers and the quiz question #3 soon.
