Asalaam alaikum,
I was just wondering, when making salat, when is the best time to make
dua?

Jazak Allah Khair.

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah :)

There are many places where there are du'as in the solah itself.... like in Al Fatihah, du'a Iftitah etc etc... But pertaining to your question... I hope this helps, inshaALlah :-)

1. During Prostration (sajdah/ sujud)

- The Prophet (saw) said,"The time when the servant is nearest to his Lord is the time when he is in prostration. Therefore make plenty of du'a in it" (Muslim)

2. In the last part of prayer (Tashahud/ Tahiyyat) after conveying blessings unto the Prophet

- The Messenger of Allah (saw) heard someone praying. The person praised and glorified Allah, and conveyed blessings to the Prophet (saw). The Prophet (saw) said to him,'Make du'a and it will be answered, ask and you will be given" (An-Nisai)

3. The middle of the night and after obligatory (wajib) prayers.

- The Messenger of Allah (saw) was asked which du'a is readily heard. He answered"(The one made) In the last part of teh night and after obligatory prayers." (At Tirmidhi)

4. Between Adhan and Iqamah

-The Prophet (saw) said," A dua between adhan and iqamah is not refised, so make du'a at that time" (Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban declared it sahih)

Taken from: The Book of Du'a by Shaikh Hussain Al-'Awaaishah

FYI, there are 26 other times and situations where du'a is accepted, that is mentioned in this book. Maybe, I should write it down... but maybe... Br Arshad can use them for "Who wants to be a Mu'min!" ;)

Allahua'lam

wassalam :-)

Cara, in Islam there are two types of prayer.

The first type is called salah - that's the prescribed daily prayer that Muslims perform at five different times throughout the day.  The way it's performed is very structured, every Muslim basically performs it in the same way, with the same movements (like bowing and prostrating) and words (like verses from the Quran and praises of God in Arabic).

Another type of prayer is called dua.  This can be said at any time, in any language, whenever you want or feel like performing it.  It's when you call upon God, and ask Him for *anything*, confess to Him anything, seek His forgiveness, guidance, etc.  There is no structured method of doing it, nor is there anything you are required to say.  It's a very intimate, personal, and beautiful connection to God.  Usually when Muslims perform dua, they raise their hands - not with their fingers steepled together - but with palms to the sky, in a gesture like begging, as we acknowledge that God alone is the only One who can grant us things, and it is to Him alone we should ask.

Hope that answers your question :)

take care :)

ps - here's a picture of a guy performing dua:

Asalaam alaikum,
Jazak Allah Khair.  Thank you so much for answering that question for me.  It really helped me.  One more question: When you said you can confess things to Allah in du'a, is that like Catholic confession?
 Thanks again,

slm,

not really, because Allah knows your sins already.. you are simply mentioning them when you make duaa so you can ask forgiveness for those specific things :)

In addition to Br Meraj's post, there is a further difference: there is no intermediary.  You are seeking forgiveness directly with the one who is able to forgive.  Likewise, you don't come away with a formula along the lines of "X 'Hail Mary's'" that guarantees that your confession/plea for forgiveness was accepted.
….. when is the best time to make dua?
Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) talked about Friday and said,

"There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand."

And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands

I just want to add a few things to se7en's post in explaining the difference between salaah (prayer) and du'aa (supplication):

The salaah (prayer) - whether voluntary or obligatory - is made up of certain required movements.  Standing up, bowing, prostrating (putting your head on the ground), sitting.  The salaah also consists of certain things that *must* be said, and that must be said *in Arabic*.  For example, every salaah must contain a recital of the first chapter of the Qur'an in the standing position.  Certain invocations must be made in the bowing, prostratinc, and sitting positions as well.  Etc.

The du'aa (supplication) - which is always a voluntary act of worship - contains a lot more leeway.  You can make it virtually at any place, at any time.  There is no required *form* of making a du'aa.  You can also make it in any language that is convenient for you.  You don't have to kneel down, or bow your head, or look up at the sky, or close your eyes.  Nothing.

Granted, it's better manners to do certain things while making a du'aa, if you are in a situation to do so.  For example, it is recommended when making du'aa to be in a state of wudoo (ablution), face the qiblah (Makkah), sit down on the ground, raise your hands (as the picture depicts in se7en's post) and humble yourself before Allah.  There are also others.

One point to note is that du'aa is also a *part* of every salaah that we make!  Sounds confusing? :)  As I said earlier, the salaah consists of certain movements.  In some of the movements, there is a window where you are encouraged/supposed to supplicate (make du'aa).  For example, during prostration (when you are putting your head on the ground), it is highly recommended to supplicate to Allah after having pronounced the required invocations for that position.  Also while sitting down, towards the end of the prayer, it is highly recommended to supplicate.  (See Barr's post above, part 1 and 2).

The du'aas that you make in your salaah might be different from the du'aas that I make in my salaah.  So it is important to note that NOT everyone prays the salaah *identically* in Islam.  The movements that everyone performs are identical, but what is said in them may differ from person to person (especially the supplications).

I hope that helps.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.

P.S. The only thing that you cannot ask Allah for in a du'aa is for Him to help you in doing something which He Himself has forbidden.  For example, you cannot ask Allah to make the girl you're asking out for a date say yes! :)  Also, you cannot ask Allah to forgive someone who died in the state of disbelief or shirk (associating partners with Allah).

When making dua during sajdah, is this the sajdah during actual prayer(during fard, sunnah, nafl) or a separate one done for this such purpose (specific dua)? Reason being, during actual prayer we recite subhanallah rabbi ya'allah, so at what point do we recite dua?
After the tasbih (ie. Subhana Rabiyal A'la) - Glory be to ALlah the Most High.

Alternatively, after your prayers, or any other time as well, we may do sujud/sajdah and recite our du'as there.

Duah?
Mashaallah, you all are very knowledgeable about the specifics. In general I hold true to the fact that we make duahs all the time in our hearts no matter what. We are holding on to our Basic and ONLY lifeline Allah.
May He keep us in constant Rememberance and Dhikr.

(Amin).
