Call for art from Muslim/Arab/Persian and Sufi artists A gallery show in response to Sept 11 In response to September 11, Alex Echo who has a gallery in Easthampton, Long Island, is donating his space to put together a show of Muslim/Arab/Persian and Sufi art. He feels this is the most patriotic thing he can personally do. Since we have to move very quickly to get this show up by Dec. 8, I would love if you might be willing to share this email with other artists, photographers, sculptors and even musicians who might want to participate. Here are the details: We are looking for 20 to 30 Muslim, Arab, Persian, and/or Sufi artists, painters, sculptors, photographers to submit one or two pieces. All Muslims and Sufi artists are welcome, from all origins and descents. This is a unique opportunity to let our voice be heard and make a change, to give a real human face to the beauty of our cultural and spiritual backgrounds. Alex Echo, an artist, gallery owner and calligrapher of Rumi's works, is offering his beautiful space to host an exhibition show of Muslim artists of all descents. His wish is to let others hear the voice of the Muslim community in all its diversity and cultural richness, particularly in response to the current events. His goal is to create peace and harmony in showing the human, compassionate and beautiful side of Islam. By Nov. 21st we need the names of each participating artist, a bio and the names of their submitted work, in order to send the press releases. We have a good PR person in place so that should help with coverage. By Dec. 6th, all artwork should be delivered to Alex's Long Island Gallery. The opening is Dec. 8th and the show will last until Dec. 31st 2001. If you know of any artist or mosque or Islamic cultural organization that would also be interested in being a part of this, please feel free to forward this email or contact us. Selima Raoui and Melody Shekinah Winnig will be curating the show. For artists in New England and anywhere else but NY-DC corridor, contact: Melody Winnig at mwinnig@mediaone.net 508-358-5629 Since this is a major project for this small but affluent community, it is already getting the press attention. Alex's 40% share of the sale will be donated to an appropriate children's charity. Artists will retain 60% of sales. Alex is generously giving his space, money, contacts and time to this very special show. Anyone who would like to also volunteer their skills, help, talents (musicians) or middle-eastern food is greatly encouraged! |
