i was just reading something in the Jannaration oasis and thought of something which i thought id put up here since not everyone goes to that room (i dont think).  what are the most unusual names of people you've come across? when i was in the gulf, the arabs who were of bedouin stock were keen on names like 'tuffaaha' (apple) and 'mooza' (banana), and 'nakhla' (date palm)...a friend of mine used to study with a bengali girl called 'Asfalu's-Saafileen' (lowest of the low) :o.....apparently her parents did this thing where they just opened the quran and pointed their finger and named their daughter that! (they thought that cuz it was from teh quran it had to be a good name!)

so any other funky names around?

hehe - i heard of a person who was named "sharrul-bariya" (worst of creatures) by the parents for the same reason.

Also, i was in some shock when i heard that 'Shagufta' was actually a real Pakistani name... i was like "huh? who the heck would like to be called 'Shagufta'"

I have no idea what it means, but it sort of rhymes with an indo-pak dish called kofte (meatballs).

as salaamu alaykum,

Yeah, I don't know about Shagufta.  Talk about a mad desi name.  :P

A little girl at our masjid is named Qurrutul Ayn [coolness of the eyes].. now that's an awesome name :)

I know of a non-Muslim guy named Koran... his mom didn't know what the word meant, but she heard it when she was pregnant and thought it sounded nice.

And I know a guy (non-Muslim) named Saifullah [the sword of Allah] though he pronounces it "saffoola".

Hey hey thats my cousins name! :D
It has a beautiful meaning but too difficult to pronounce routinely so everyone just calls her 'big Anne' (pronounced in urdu as "burri annie") because her younger sis is called Noorul Ayn but known as little Anne.

I can't stand desi names Fauzia and Shazia cos they're just way toooooooooooooo common :) Every family has that pair and wherever you go, you'll always find them! Just can't seem to get away from them ;-D No offense to the fauzia's and shazia's on Jannah.org and I know there are a few here ;)

recently i heard of a man introducing his children saying, "Assalaamu alaikum, meet my children 'Quran' and 'Sunnah'"!!!???

also, i knew a mum who called her twin daughters Mecca and Medina :o

and a friend called her daughter Shariah.

Bilal Philips gave a talk and commented that one of the RIGHTS the CHILD has over its PARENTS is to be called with a good name!

As far as I know, this name means one who has a kind and soft nature, so see the meaning is nice :)

Shagufta is a nice name. I used to know two sisters named Shagufta and Tabassub. Shagufta, I think, means laughing. And Tabassub means smiling.  Or maybe it was Farkhunda instead of Tabassum. I think Farkhunda means happy.

I know a baby named Ummul Baneen: mother of sons.  poor kid.
I also know someone named Larabas (Laa Ra'a Ba's, See No Harship or Sadness, how would you translate Ba's?)
I know a lot of kids whose names start with Sheikh something or Sidi something, who were named after sheikhs or sidis in their family, which is my hubby's family :) they have funny names in his family.  Another is  Ma el ainin (first name) Ma el ainin (Last name).

The following aren't unusual names but get this--out of the daily prayers I've known 3 out of the 5  :D

My little cousin's name is Fajr (a girl), I used to go to Sunday school with two sisters named Asr and Maghrib.  I've yet to meet someone named Dhuhr and or Isha.  Oh and I also met a sister named Islam :)

[quote]A little girl at our masjid is named Qurrutul Ayn [coolness of the eyes]..[/quote]
wow I never thought of naming a kid that, I'm gonna add that to my already started list of names inshaAllah... :D

InshaAllah all is well with you all...

but Qurratul Anne is my cousin's name as well... we don't call her big annie or little annie, hehe! just plain old annie :-) she's my khala's daughter, so she already gets spoiled from my mom :D

and i forget who talked about hearing the names maghrib and asr and fajr- i know an isha, well i don't personally know her, but she's my sister's student, but yeah... so isha.. now all we need to know if someone is named duhr ;)

now any weird names i've heard.. hmm i don't think so! actually i think my cousins have weird names... they are soo Pakistani'ish! :) one's name is Awais and Khizer...those are just weird to me, and i have no clue what they mean.. i'm sure the native born Pakistani's know the names, but it was just weird for an ABCD, like me :)

but shazia and fauzia aren't really that common desi names! i would think something like aisha or amina or rehan or imran or etc...hehe :)

anywho, names are names... it's all good in the hood, eh?

Take Care!

Anik
11/25/01 at 17:35:23
asaalamu alaikum,

the name i was born with means absolutely nothing in my language- hindi.

Anik was the name of a satellite launched in that time, it's a street name in Ottawa, a printing press company, and an Indian ghee brand, which led my parents to believe my name means pure.

It kinda sucks to have no meaning ina  name lol

apparently in Inuit it means "friend" so i just go by that, and in Arabic "well dressed"...

anyone else here named something which means absoloutely nothing in their language at all? :) asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

asalamu alaikum,

I don't know what my parents were thinking at the time....maybe they thought it sounded cute for a kid..but when i was born they named me Fay Faiyaz (Faiyaz being my middle name). After I got some sense and understood the implications of my name I was pretty ):( I don't think Fay means anything...unless one of you knows what it means in arabic.  To me it was a girls name and I hated it, so they changed it to Ahmed.

Parents really have to be careful not to give their poor kid a complex when they grow up!!

One of my cousin's is named Shain.  Does anyone know what that means?  I thought perhaps he was called it coz it imitates an english name.

Shagufta, Tabassum are *niice* names if you know Urdu!  Their meaning is beautiful.

Shagufta is like soft, serene.

Tabassum is a smile.  Like this :)

Qurratul-3ayn is one of my all time favorite names!  It's actually a pretty common name in Pakistan.  But like someone said, it's extremely difficult to pronounce.  (Desis usually pronounce it 'qora tul ayn').

Try "Lee".  In my native language (English, an odd, fairly new language with which some of may be familiar: except the Americans I suppose ...) it has two meanings:

1. The side of an island, village, etc. that is sheltered from the wind (hence the nautical term "head leeward").

2. A redneck general.

My parents chose it because it's monosyllabic and therefore cannot be shortened.  Yeah, thanks mum, dad ...

Man, and to think people ask me why I introduce myself as "Haaris".

By the way, do you guys all think that English/Americans have really stupid names?  My in-laws (Pakistani) think that English people's names are, like really weird.  They still cringe when they hear my surname (in a nice way, they aren't at all nasty about it !!).

I thought some pakistani names were derived from Persia.

Like:
Shahnaz = The king's loved/favorite one
Shahrzad = City-born
Shabnam = Dew
Shahbaz = Royal falcon
Faraz = Above, up, upon, on the top
Firouz = Victorious
Javad = Liberal

Is urdu a child of persian?

Hania, Urdu is a mixture of several different languages.  There's a lot of Persian in it, a lot of Arabic, some Hindi, and some Turkish.

All the names you mentioned have their origin in Faarsi (Persian), I think.

I love that name too :) It's my mother's

Talking about odd names in my country they have this weird tradition of naming girls after cities. Names like London, Berlin,Paris,Roma, Madina, etc...are very common.

My favourite name for guys: Anas, means companion.
it's female version is also beautifull : Aneesa

Other fav names include Tahir (somalis pronounce it as Dahir which totally disfigures the name), Faisal, Khalid, and Moustafa for boys.

For girls: Sumayya,Malak,Haajar,Noura, and ofcourse my own awesome name...hehe just kidding although i do love my name :) Actually i have two names but that's another story.

i really liked the name Ikhlaas for a girl (sincerity) but then someone pointed out to me...its kinda vague...sincerity to what?!
