FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ramadan 10 1422 (November 25 2001)

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing away of one of our beloved students, Sr. Tamina Qureshi, president of the MSA chapter at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). Indeed to Allah we belong and to Him is our return. Sr. Tamina, 20 years old, was a senior in Accounting. She returned to Allah (Swt) by His will in a fatal car accident this past Thanksgiving break and during this blessed month of Ramadan. By the will and mercy of Allah (Swt), her fraternal twin sister Rabia survived the crash and is recovering. The sisters were on their drive home to visit their family in New Jersey.

MSA National President Altaf Husain, an alumnus of CWRU (’92,’94), had just visited the MSA at CWRU on Saturday November 11, 2001 for Islam Awareness Week outreach and was stunned at receiving the news of Sr. Tamina’s demise. “Perhaps one of the most enthusiastic and dedicated workers I have met recently, Sr. Tamina courageously led her MSA through the difficult ordeal following the 9-11 attacks” Brother Altaf said. Since becoming president of the MSA, Sr. Tamina and the board members have helped strengthen the chapter through outreach to Muslims of all backgrounds in the CWRU community.

During the meeting with Br. Altaf and the rest of the board, Sr. Tamina spoke humbly of her own personal Islamic revival and considered herself as a bridge between those Muslim students who were struggling to assert their Islamic identity and those who had already established it. In a telephone conversation this weekend, her roommate recalled Sr. Tamina’s excitement at wanting to be connected with the National MSA community. Wa ask Allah (Swt) to accept her efforts, to forgive her and to grant her the best of the Hereafter.

We offer the following supplication for Sr. Tamina:

“O Allah, forgive and have mercy upon her, excuse her and pardon her, and make honorable her reception. Expand her entry and cleanse her with water, snow, and ice, and purify her of sin, as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange her home for a better home, and her family for a better family. Admit her into the Garden, protect her from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.”

May Allah (swt) accept all of our fasting, our praying, and our supplications for Sr. Tamina and for all those who have returned to Allah (Swt) this past year. We ask Allah (swt) to grant Sr. Tamina’s family patience and strength as they persevere through these difficult times.

Indeed, during the blessed month of Ramadan, we should all set aside some time and reflect on the bounties that have been bestowed upon us by Allah (swt).

Wassalamu alaykum warahamatullahi wabarakatuh

A Tribute to a Dear Friend and an Inspiration

Tamina Qureshi
July 18, 1981 - November 21, 2001
by Sahar Dar

Tamina Qureshi was born on July 16, 1981 in Lahore, Pakistan to parents Mohiy and Nighat Qureshi. The youngest of three, Tamina enjoyed being a little sister to her fraternal twin sister, Rabia Qureshi, and her elder brother, Khalid Qureshi, CWRU '00. Moving to the United States at a young age, Tamina spent most of her life in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She graduated from Cherry Hill West High School in June 1999. Here, she devoted much of her time to taking numerous honors and advanced placement courses, to playing soccer and field hockey, and to many school organizations such as Amnesty International and her school yearbook.

Tamina entered Case Western Reserve University in August 1999, eager to share her many talents with her surrounding community. Known as a warm, friendly, and outgoing girl, she quickly became involved in campus life. An Accounting major, planning on pursuing the BS-MS in Accounting from Weatherhead School of Management, Tamina was inducted into the CWRU chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a national accounting honors society, on December 6, 2001. She was also involved in organizations such as Asian American Alliance, Middle Eastern Cultural Association, Persian Club, Indian Students Association, and Pakistani Students Association.

During the two and a half years that she was at CWRU, Tamina was also a member of the Muslim Students Association. She had recently become even more active in the organization, after being elected the President of the organization in September 2001. During her term, Tamina led the organization through the backlash of the events of September 11th, sharing her knowledge and love for Islam with the media, as well as with her fellow classmates and the campus at-large at various forums that were held in the weeks following these terrorist attacks.

She was committed to her faith, reading Qur'an more, recently beginning to wear hijab, and playing an important role in the planning of Islam Awareness week, the very first one that CWRU had participated in during the past few years. The events of this week included a presentation of Islamic recitations as well as art and architecture, a presentation on science and islam, a panel discussion that allowed female CWRU Muslim students to confront typical stereotypes of women in Islam, and a presentation by NYC actor Geoffrey Ewing on the life of Muhammad Ali. In addition to these informational programs, Tamina also helped plan an Islamic Bazar that took place twice during the week. This Bazar allowed both Muslims and non-Muslims on campus to enjoy ethnic food and Islamic music and to fill out a quiz testing them of their knowledge of Islam while looking at displays of Islamic dress and information boards.

Tamina also helped to develop a curriculum to teach the basics of Islam that she was to present as a SATCO (Saturday Company) class on December 1, 2001 to members of the CWRU community. This class was titled "Mysterious, Misunderstood, Misued: Islam, A Closer Look." Unfortunately, Tamina passed away in a tragic car accident on November 21, 2001 and was never able to make this presentation. She will, however, be remembered fondly by her close friends and family members, as well as her fellow members of the Muslim Students Association.

Tamina was an inspiration and an example to all whose life she touched. She always appreciated the gift of life and believed that she should spend her own committed to the things she held most dear: her family, her friends, her schoolwork, and most importantly, her religion. It is no wonder that she so appropriately chose a quote by Walt Whitman as her yearbook quote her senior year of high school, "...O life, the powerful play goes, and you may contribute a verse. And so, my friends, it is not too late to see the newer world; for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset..."
