Deen Intensive Program 2001
To Revive the Community Using the Traditional Approach to Islamic
Knowledge

December 23rd, 2001 to December 29th, 2001
Florida Lions Camp, Lake Wales, Florida

All praise is due to Allah, and May His Peace and Blessings be upon the
Prophet Muhammad and upon his family, and his companions and all those
who follow his way until the Day of Judgment, Ameen.

The Deen Intensive Program (DIP) 2001 will be taking place December 23
to December 29, 2001 at the Florida Lion’s Camp in Lake Wales, Florida
(approx. 1hr 30 min. south of Orlando).  First held in 1993 at Dar
al-Islam in New Mexico, the Deen Intensive is a unique program whose goal
is to inspire participants to undertake a serious study of their faith
and apply it in their daily lives and in their communities. The
methodology of the Deen Intensive is based upon taking a complete approach to
Islam as derived from the Qur’an and the Sunnah as it has been passed to
us by men and women of knowledge in unbroken chains of transmission
until today. The Hadith Jibreel acts as the basis for the curriculum and
the topics covered reflect our deen in all its three dimensions: Islam
(Submission), Iman (Faith), and Ihsan (Spiritual Excellence).

The program is open to both men and women. Adults and parents are
encouraged to apply.

“Why Should I attend?”
The Deen Intensive Program offers participants a unique opportunity to
closely study the basic sciences of Islam with eminent Islamic scholars
and teachers. The program will introduce and expand students’
understanding of the rich tradition of classical Islamic knowledge and give
students’ an appreciation of how important the ulum al-din are to the
preservation and revival of Islam in the contemporary age. Participants will
also experience the importance of an active spiritual life through
their study of Ihsan and also gain insights into the importance of
brotherhood and sisterhood. Furthermore, the DIP is a means to inspire
believers to be active and dynamic members of their community - as Imam Ghazali
said, “Knowledge without work is insanity and work without knowledge is
vanity and cannot be.”

Curriculum
·         Islam (Fiqh – Jurisprudence): Tentatively, fiqh from both the
Shafi’i and Hanafi schools of Islamic Law will be taught during the
program. Students will be asked to choose one of the two streams.
Participants will review the chapters on purification and prayer. There will
be ample time for questions and answers and personal contact with the
teachers. In addition to the main sessions, which will be for both men
and women, special additional sessions will be held for sisters. Some
materials may have to be purchased.  Information on required texts for the
classes will be given upon acceptance to the program.

·         Iman (Aqidah – Creed): Aqidah, or the basic principles of
Iman, will be taught using classical texts and will be supplemented by
material from Aqidah Tahawiyyah and Jawhar al-Tawhid. If materials need to
be purchased for this component of the course, participants will be
advised well before the start of the program.

·         Ihsan: The subject of spiritual excellence and tazkiyah
(purification of the heart) will be systematically covered over the course
of the program using a variety of authoritative and classical texts. An
emphasis will be placed on how to rid oneself of blameworthy traits and
adopt noble character as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (May Peace
and Blessing be Upon Him!).

·         There will be lectures on various topics of contemporary
interest, and time for individual study and reflection.

·         There will also be daily sessions of Qur’an recitation, in
addition to lessons on the rules of reciting the Qur’an (tajweed).

·         In addition to the regular schedule, participants will be
encouraged to take part in organized recreational activities.

Mandatory Orientation Session

There will be a mandatory orientation session in early December for
first-time local applicants to the Deen Intensive Program. At this session
applicants will be given a comprehensive introduction to the
methodology of the Deen Intensive, the various components of the curriculum, the
materials used and the teachers who will be with us during the week. An
information package will be provided for each applicant. There will be
ample time for questions and answers and light refreshments will be
provided.  For those first-time applicants not from the local Florida
region, the necessary information will be sent to you along with direct
contact with one of the Deen Intensive organizers to answer all pertinent
questions or concerns. All applicants will be contacted individually to
inform of them of the dates and times for the orientations.

The Teachers

The teachers at the DIP will be Shaykh Abdallah Adhami (currently in
Damascus, Syria),  Shaykh Jamal Az-Zahabi (Beirut, Lebanon), and
additional teachers are TBA. Detailed biographies of the teachers will be
provided upon acceptance.

Course Materials
Upon acceptance students will be sent a detailed package with all the
appropriate information regarding: the site; guidelines for clothing and
a “what-to-bring” list; a schedule for the week and room assignments;
biographies of the teachers; a manual on adab and the etiquettes of
learning; and a comprehensive reader containing important articles which
each participant will be expected to review before the beginning of the
program. Some materials and books may have to be purchased – students
will be advised of this upon acceptance. Ihya Productions  and Florida
Deen Intensive, Inc. will have a small collection of books, tapes and
videos available for sale on site.

The Site
·         The DIP will be held at the Florida Lion’s Club, located 1 hr
30 min south of Orlando, Florida. The facility is fully equipped with a
heating/cooling system and students will be accommodated in shared
cabins and lodges. Due to the southern location of the site, special
instructions and guidelines for dress will be forthcoming. The site is
supervised by trained personnel.  They will be assisted by volunteers from
the DIP organizing committee.

·         Generally, it is expected that students will bring warm
clothing for the evenings and lighter wear for the days, a good pair of
outdoor and indoor shoes, and their own bedding and toiletries.

·         Food will be cooked on site by a professional Muslim kitchen
staff. Students will be expected to assist with food preparation and
clean up as part of their tarbiyyah during the program. A schedule for
“kitchen duty” will be handed out before the start of the program.

·         Transportation to the site will be provided from Orlando (for
those flying in from out-of-town) and its costs are covered in the
registration fees.  We recommend that all out-of-town applicants arrange
for their arrival on Dec. 22 and their departure for Dec. 29.  Details on
when to schedule your flight will be given as soon as you have been
notified of your acceptance.  Please do not confirm your flight until the
organizing committee has given you an acceptance notice.  Due to the
limited time, you will receive notice as soon as possible to avoid any
further delays. Participants driving in from out-of-town will be given
appropriate instructions and information.  Please contact the organizing
committee if you require special arrangements.

Application Process
Please complete the application form found at the official Florida Deen
Intensive website (found below).  To be eligible to attend the DIP
students should be at least 16 years of age. The program is open to both
men and women and adults and parents are encouraged to apply. To be
eligible to participate, applicants should submit a completed application
form to the organizing committee as soon as possible. Due to site and
size constraints the DIP is limited to 100 people.  We apologize in
advance in the delay of sending out the DIP information, but due to the
recent tragic events much of the planning had to be suspended.  Participants
will be chosen on the strength of their application (as per the details
requested on the form) and the level of seriousness they demonstrate.
Moreover, the sooner your application is received the sooner it can be
processed. This is an intensive program and all participants will be
expected to display high level of commitment to the program and adab, or
the etiquettes of learning, will be highly stressed. A guideline of
these rules will be provided for each student and acceptance to the
program entails that one will be obliged to follow them. All students will be
expected to attend every session and participate in all aspects of the
program to the best of their ability. Furthermore, due to the site,
children will not be able to be accommodated at the DIP and parents should
try to make arrangements for their children for the week. If parents
cannot make outside arrangements for their children, please contact the
organizing committee and we will endeavor to do our best to accommodate
your needs. Every effort will be made to accommodate all applicants,
however if one is not accepted into the program, the DIP organizing
committee is trying to co-ordinate additional seminar sessions after the DIP
to meet their needs.

Registration fees
The cost of the program is $300.00 US/ per person, which includes room,
board, materials package and transportation to-and-from the site. Fees
must be paid in full with the application form, either in check or
money order payable to “ Florida Deen Intensive”. Students may withdraw
from the program at any time, but if accepted they must inform the
organizing committee of their withdrawal by December 15, 2001 to receive a
full refund. After this date a surcharge of $100.00 US amount will be
deducted from the fees. Unused cheques/money orders will be destroyed.
Applicants are encouraged to make an additional donation to help defray
costs and help support other students who may otherwise be unable to
attend. Special arrangements for payment can be made and financial
assistance is available upon request. Every effort will be made to ensure that
financial constraints do not hinder eligible participants from
attending.

All checks/money orders should be mailed to:
