The purpose of life is to worship Allah and Allah alone.
The easing of the heart is a touchy subject, cuz it differs from person to person. Each individual has a unique way of expressing themselves. Understanding and nurturing the uniqueness is the key to self reform.
In my experience, self reform comes with education...knowing the rules, and if they don't work/make sense keep trying(not abandonding them, during a so called challenge)...a lot of challenges end up being an illusion anyway. What was a test yesterday, becomes a wake up call today, and a vision for tommorow.

WAllahu A'alam.

Assalamu Alaikum waRahmatullahi waBarakatuHu,

I agree with Mystic b/c everyone's heart is different and can be affected in different ways. For example, some people will become emotional by just reciting a couple of verses from the Qur'an, while others will need so much more convincing to go through a change.
However, when you're faced with a problem, the best way to go about it is to seek the help of Allah-u Subhana Wata'ala. Allah-u Subhana Wata'ala knows best and he tests us in different ways, and when we're faced with a struggle, remember to always keep Allah-u Subhana Wata'ala in your mind and seek His guidance and His help.

Here are a couple of dua's to be recited in distress:

- La ilaha illallahu rabbul arshil adhim, La ilaha illallahu rabbus samawati wa rabbul ardhi wa rabbul arshil karim.
Meaning: There is no God but Allah, the Lord of Magnificent Throne. There is no God except Allah, Lord of the Heavens, and Lord of the Earth and Lord of the glorious Throne.

- Ya hayyu ya qayyumu birahmatika estaghiyth.
Meaning: O Thou Self-Subsisting and Eternal! For Thy mercy do I appeal.

- Allahu Allahu rabbiy, La ushrik bihi sheya.
Meaning: God is my Lord. I do not ascribe partners to Him.

Prayers under Calamity and Misfortune:
- Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.
Meaning: We belong to Allah and to Him is our return.

- Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un, Allahumma ajirniy fiy musiybetiy wakhlufliy khayran minha.
Meaning: We belong to Allah and to Him is our return. O Allah! reward me for (putting up with) this calamity and grant me a better recompense.

You also said that your friend was real sick. It is very good to read Surat-ul Yasin.

I hope this helps insha'Allah. May Allah help you and your friend, and all of us, insha'Allah.

Wassalamu Alaikum waRahmatullahi waBarakatuHu,
Betul

That is very enlightening...There are more duahs in "Husn Muslim"...I love them!!!! I just have to get through memorizing all of them!!! Mashaallah, the Rasul [saw], was very eloquent in praise and worship.
