praying  [tasleem after imaam?]

Is it true that we have to say the tasleem after the imaam while praying in jamaah?  I noticed that not many people do this.  I was told that we have to do this because we are *following* the imaam, he is the ameer [leader].  Does anyone have any evidence for this?

jazak Allah

You mean do we have to actually pronounce the words "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" while we're making our tasleem, even while praying behind an imaam in a jamaa'ah?

Huh..?

I mean the actual turning of the head [while u say salaam] at the end of the prayer.  Do we do the tasleem with the imaam or after the imaam?

Oh!  Sorry, I'm slow these days :)  Must be the *cold* front that recently arrived in Texas :-/

The Prophet [saw] said in an authentic hadith that the imam is there to be *followed*.  Therefore, you should *follow* him in all of his actions.

The Prophet [saw] further said that when he makes rukoo, then make rukoo; when he makes sujood, then make sujood; etc.

So when he makes tasleem, *then* make tasleem.  Follow his actions *after* he has made them.

Wallahu a'lam.

Assalamu 'Alaikum,

Here is something to help u, InshaAllah.

It is obligatory to follow the imam and forbidden to precede him:

Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said: "The imam is selected to be followed; therefore, do not differ with him. When he makes the takbir, make the takbir, when he goes into ruku', make ruku'. When he says 'Allah hears him who praises Him,' say 'O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs the Praise.' When he goes into sajdah, make sajdah. If he prays sitting, then all should be sitting." This is related by the group. In the version by Ahmad and Abu Dawud, the wording is "the imam is to be followed. If he makes the takbir, make the takbir, and do not make the takbir until he does so. When he goes into ruku', make ruku', and do not perform ruku' until he does so. When he goes into sajdah, make sajdah, and do not make sajdah until he does so."
Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said: "Do you not fear that if you raise your head before the imam Allah may change your head into that of a donkey!" This is related by the group.
Anas reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alehi wasallam said: "O people, I am your imam, so do not precede me in ruku' or in sujjud or in qiyam or in sitting or in finishing." This is related by Ahmad and Muslim .
Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib says: "We prayed with the Messenger of Allah and when he said Allah hears him who praises Him,' none of us would bend his back until the Messenger of Allah had put his forehead upon the ground." This is related by the group.

Wassalam.

Subhanallah...
And the thought that can even cross our minds...to think "we" are more intelligent than our own righteous, chosen, leaders, simply cuz they aren't on a podium???

[slm],

I think the question probably arose because some people do their tasleem after the Imam has completed his turning of head to *both* shoulders, while others do it when Imam has completed it just once. Some people even get very agitated about this, their daleel being that Imam must be followed. But while there is no difference of opinion among scholars that Imam must be followed and that anticipating his actions nullify one's Salat, there is a difference of opinion on when exactly is the Salat finished. Is it when the Imam has finished doing tasleem for both sides or is it when he has finished on one side. So one scholar on being asked this question said both opinions are ok to follow and neither way would nullify one's salat inshaAllah because in both the intention is to follow the Imam.

Wassalam
