[This is a live interview telecast on November 27th at 11.10pm (GMT 4+).The prominent News presenter Nissar Sayyed is interviewing the renowned poetess Dr. Kamala Surayya]

The Interview

Nissar Sayyed: Assalamu Alaikum

Surayya: Alaikum Salam

Nissar Sayyed: Many viewers had constantly requested for Mother to talk irrespective of the time limit. It is by honoring such demands, that we bring you to this telecast. One important thing we like to know is that many viewers out there will be expecting to find some controversial points in your talk.

However, until recently you have been seeing Ramadan and the fasting from a distance outside Islam. How did you feel when you experienced this holy month directly within the fold of Islam?

Surayya: Ramadan is a time of self-purification. It is a period when we repent and wash away our sins and once again attain perfection. The Hindus have a practice of bathing in the holy river and visit temples (according to their belief). On similar lines, we bathe in the river of Taqwa and come out afresh. we are definitely coming out as purified souls.

We should spend more on charities during this month. The results will definitely be there. even before embracing Islam, I had understood the secret of Zakat. From the age of 18, I have learnt to give charity. Or else I would have become very rich by now.

Now I am experiencing great joy at heart. Satisfaction too. What Islam gave me was a chance to repent for my past sins. Allah has forgiven me and accepted me. In fact, my old age has transformed into youth. Darkness is gone and the moonlight of Allah's Mercy has dawned in my life. I was myself moonlit. To describe the joy I am going through... it would've been nice if the believers of Islam understood it...(sob)

Many mocked. Many threatened life. Many pressured. But nothing touched me. Because I have found my Only Lord. It is as if He is welcoming me with paradise door open. Accepting pain and joy as gifts, I am living content with Him.

Nissar Sayyed: So you are saying that pain also is a gift for you...

Surayya: Yes. It will definitely come like that...

Nissar Sayyed: Then Mother talked about Zakat along with saying that had you not given Zakat, you would've become rich. What is your opinion about those who spend or don't spend on Zakat in our society?

Surayya: Many are there who avoid it. That is why their faces become tarnished. Those who are habitual with Zakat, on their faces will be a special brightness. That will be due to the light of God. not man-made. GIVE, GIVE and GIVE- That shall be life. TAKE and TAKE- these are the disgraced ones. Allah has blessed me with an opportunity to help many....(sob)

Nissar Sayyed: If we give a global dimension to Zakat, do you believe it can solve the problems to a certain limit?

Surayya: We have to make an attempt. Certainly, if an Islamic perspective, a genuine perspective, develops it can happen. But presently it is impossible. The misconception of Islam is spread everywhere like the smoke after a bombing scene. What shall we do to remove such misunderstandings? Which country shall we go and speak about it? I don't know.

I visualize a kind of world... where we can travel free without visas. A free world. What is the difference between those in America and here? I have traveled much and seen much. I have spoken at different stages. What I have understood is the women there have the same dreams I have. They want to leave peacefully. See the laughter of their dear children. There isn't any serious differences. Those out there are simply making the claims. My child! All are same in the world.

Nissar Sayyed: So basically you are talking about a 'Free Zone'?

Surayya: Yes. The whole world should become like a grand house. We want the love of all. What else can I say? Our long time family friend Andrew in New York asked me to come and deliver a speech on the right perspective of Islam. But now what will I say when I reach there? I will be going there like a bird with a broken wing. I am deeply grieved at this misunderstanding of Islam. I they call me an extremist, there are people to believe that as well... (sob)

Nissar Sayyed: Anyway, Mother has given us a thought of a global nature. We hope that your words become an inspiration for the future generation. Therefore we are dedicating your poetic words for the viewers.

Surayya: I convey my love and respects for all those who heard me.

Nissar Sayyed: Dear viewers. Mother Surayya has the world in her heart when she talks about peace. Not just a family or nation. She hopes for Free Zone for the entire humanity.

["It was at a public seminar that Kamala Das, a renowned poet, writer and columnist who lives in Kerala, announced  her conversion to Islam publicly. Now Kamala Das and Madhavikutty (as she is known in her home country) will have a 'Surayya' next to it. On December 11th 1999 Kamala Das publicly declared her acceptance of Islam.]
