How many hijab?

Assalamualaikum,

Ok girls. How many hijabs do  you have?

I was doing a total redesigning of my room including my closet... I counted my hijab.. it was like 40 ++. Ack!!! How can 1 girl have that many hijabs ( that doesn't include mom's). I even had hijabs from 10 yrs ago!!!

Starting wearing, follow what mom gave. In college, follow the trend, the triangle hijab with beads, triangle with lace, square with lace, triangle with roses, hijabs from Jordan,Turkey,Italy,Korea,Mecca,Egypt,Cambodia,Vietnam,Indonesia, self made round hijab, even a veil set (long story), and now I'm into the kind of hijab worn by Saudi Arabian woman ( I think), the wrap around..my fav at the moment. But, out of this 40+ collection of hijab, I keep wearing only abt 6 of them.

Anyone want any hijabs? I even have a few that i never wore before.

i gotta get over this hijab addiction... *sigh*

What if I took the hijab I have and gave to my non-hijab friends ???

Well, anyone that need hijab, different style, can always email me. Maybe if I get over my laziness I'll send them to whoever need them or wanna change style.

Hmm, did I just come up with an idea to do business... gee..I guess what my friend said abt me is true. Whenever we have conversation even if it's abt cow ( no offense to the Albanyian cows) , my end reply would be.. "Yanno, we can make money out of that..." Oh, btw, my cookies business for the Eid is going well, Alhamdulillah. ;) and I just bought another hijab.. *sigh*

Mahmoudah makes the most sense to me right now...there is no point in focusing on the many many hijabs and stuff....simply playing around with what we have or better yet making ours plainer and simpler, simplifies our own processes.
May Allah guide us Inshaallah (Amin).

I think everyone should send me a hijaab from their homeland-

hmm... you all say why is Kathy saying that...

I help put up Islamic displays at the museum and mall. This year for Eid ul- Adha we are thinking of doing a theme of "Muslims are fom all over the World" type idea- nothing is finalized yet.

Make sure they are washable- i may want to wear it in the meantime.....:)

As-salaamu alaikum sisters,

If you really need to clean out that hijab drawer how about
donating to a local prison or jail.  Through my husbands work I have noticed that when for some reason a Muslim woman is arrested they don't seem to be wearing their hijab.  But soon start asking for one.  And then there are many who revert while incarcerated.  Just an Idea.

Kathy I like your Idea too.  You are always thinking :)

I wear a hijab that's not typically Moroccan. I mean the actual cloth is moroccan but it was traditionally worn as a turban by the "blue men" of the desert.  Now they come in all sorts of colors.  I'd be happy to send you one.

Salaam dear sisters!

Well, I havent counted my hijaabs, but I KNOW I have waaaaayyy tooo many! I started with the plain white, plain black thing, then decided, that every jilbaab needed its own matching scarf...

Now, I sit with a few shelves full of scarves that only get worn once a year maybe, if its a lucky scarf...:)

I have come up with a good strategy though, other than "donating" them: every time a sister says she likes either the scarf or the jilbaab, I wash them, wrap them BOTH and give them to her.  Even if she is a non-hijabi, just to inspire her to start wearing hijaab. it worked on a few occasions. Alhamdulillah.

Any other ideas on what to do??? There are muslim orphanages where we could donate some to, i am sure they would like that, inshaAllah.

Not many- just 5 or 6(Mon thru Friday!). I only wear cotton and also either plain white, black or beige color (I think I need to buy some :) ). I had one silky type but it always slipped (gave it to someone).
Saleema, how do you keep a silk hijab from slipping? I tired one time for my brother wedding with many pins but it was terrible on top of that I was carrying my younger one and it was a disaster – I had to go to ladies room and wore a cotton one.
Also has anyone tired an under cap – is it too tight or may be too hot with hijab on top?

Wasalam
tq

Assalamu Alaikum waRahmatullahi waBarakatuHu,

First of all, Sr. Tq, an undercap is so comfortable. Alhamdulillah I've been wearing one ever since I can remember and it's so comfortable. I can wear silk or any other material and it won't slip and Alhamdulillah my scarf stays in place for the whole day. Undercaps are usually sold by Turkish ppl b/c they're the ones who mostly wear them (I'm Turkish that's why I know :))
But if you know a Turkish sister who lives close by, maybe you can talk with her or get in touch with me, and maybe I can send you one, we'll see Insha'Allah. My email is dinca@rpi.edu if you want to email me.
Getting back to the original post, Subhanallah I have so many scarves. Back in Turkey when going to middle school, we wore a uniform and the school had it's own scarf, so I mainly wore one scarf five days of the week. Then I came here and copied my friends - only white b/c it matched with everthing!!!
But as I matured Alhamdulillah, I became more aware of my culture, and wore Turkish style scarves. Turkish style is not just black and white, ya know, they have designs on them and stuff like that. Subhanallah, it's very hard to explain if you haven't seen Turkish scarves, but I doubt that since they are very popular Alhamdulillah.
Anyway, I'd be glad to send scarves Insha'Allah. Just tell me when and where and Insha'Allah I will do what I can.
May Allah bless everyone for their efforts and guide us on the straight path. Ameen.

As-Salaamu-Alaikum

This is my first "official" post so be nice please :)

I received this in my email...and would like to know what you think of it.  I have to agree with the ones I have seen with my own eyes..and those are :-

1.  The Mickey Mouse Hijab
2.  YoYo Hijab
3.  Dinner Napkin and Communal Hijabs (Hillarious to a point of insanity!)

But my favourite all time that grates on my nerve, is the one that just hangs on the shoulder.  I mean...what is the POINT?

Well, anyway..coming back to this email I received...here goes :-OBSERVATIONS ON HIJAB
Author: Unknown

It has been my personal observation that some Muslim girls and women do not realize the significance of hijab. Hijab is arabic for protection and cover. Some people put a lot effort into their hijab, yet it serves no purpose. I am referring to the pointless hijab that some girls wear.

The first pointless hijab is referred to as the headband hijab. It is a band of fabric approximately 4 inches wide. It covers the back of the head and allows all the hair to be exposed. It doesn't serve much in terms of modesty, but at least it comes in handy in case of an unexpected tennis match.

The second pointless hijab is the dupetta, also known as the Saran wrap hijab. It covers all the hair, but it is totally
transparent. Again it doesn't serve much in terms of modesty, but it keeps the hair nice and fresh.

The third type of hijab is known as the Mickey Mouse Hijab. It is when a girl wears a black scarf and tucks it behind her ear, so that her ears stick out.

We now move to my favorites:

The yo-yo hijabs.  The first yo-yo hijab, also known as the Benazir Bhutto hijab, is the scarf that keeps falling down and needs to be constantly pulled back up....up, down, up, down, just like a yo-yo.

The second yo-yo hijab is also referred to as the convertible hijab. This type of hijab is predominant at any type of
social event, i.e. an Aqeeqah, Bismillah party, Ameen party, wedding, etc.  This is when an Imam or Qari comes up to the microphone and starts to recite Qur'an.  At this point, all the convertible hijabs come up...until he says "Sadaqallahul atheem". I'm not sure, but apparently in some cultures that translates to "ok sisters, you may now take off your scarves".

I'm sure this may seem odd, but what's even funnier is when people do not anticipate the recitation of Qur'an at a social event, and are forced to be creative and use accessories such as a purse to cover one's hair.  I was surprised to see a women hold her purse over her head as "hijab"..as if the multitudes of men surrounding her are not a good enough reason to wear hijab, but some guy reciting du'a compels her to hold a purse over her head.  Her friends were more creative...one friend used her dinner napkin. I was also laughing when I saw the communal hijab-two or more girls draped under one dinner napkin during the recitation of Qur'ann.  Her other friend was still more creative. She used her coffee saucer on the back of her head.  I wasn't sure if it was hijab or a Yarmulka. I didn't know  if she was a Muslim or a Jew.

And, people should remember that hijab is not just a protection from guys, but from a girl's nafs (ego) as well.  It should
prevent girls from having to spend hours in front of the mirror doing her hair. But, unfortunately, you see girls in front of the mirror for hours doing their hijab as they would do their hair, with all sorts of elaborate braids and the like. I wanted to go up to a sister and say "Is your hijab naturally curly?".

Well, the point to remember is that some people make an effort to wear hijab, but it is futile, because it is not fulfilling
it's purpose. It's like using an umbrella with holes in it. Hijab is used for protection from guys as well as from the girl herself, and should not be used as an accessory or for beautifying one's self.

Anyway, that's it. Apologies If anyone disagrees with me or is offended.

End of Email.............

So what do you think?

As-Salaam-u-Alaikum, in reply to the sister that asked about
the scarf undercaps....I found that the "silky" ones get too hot around
the head.  I prefer the soft cotton ones...you know like the t-shirt
material type...more practical.  The one I wear is basically a
rectangular piece, folded and sewn at the long edge, leaving the 2 short edges
open.  This doesn't make your head too hot when you add a scarf on top of
it.  At least there's room to breath :)  We need that in this tropical
and humid climate we face here in Durban, South Africa!

Hope this is making sense LOL

Rehana, that put me in stitches!!!

The mickey mouse hijab is so typical, but the yo-yo hijab is even more common, esp in weddings!!!  I always c woman checking out gurls 4 their sons and if u have a yo-yo hijab u increase ur chances, lol.  Yo-yo hiajaabs r apparently elegant.

i actaully noticed myslef at a wedding a few months ago, a sis walked passed the guys and she covered her hair with her purse wen she went 2 the toilets 2 do her hair, as a sign of respect or sumthing.  It just makes me laff cuz they r so paranoid by the guys looking yet dont botrher covering!!!

anyways gotta buzz

take care

Assalamu Alaikum waRahmatullahi waBarakatuHu,

Sr. nehar, maybe you should get an undercap, they prevent the scarf from slipping down Alhamdulillah. I hope you're not offended, b/c I use an undercap and Alhamdulillah nothing happens. That's my two cents.

If you've got lots of new hijaabs which have never been worn how about selling them and giving the money to an Islaamic charity? Just a thought!
