Islamabad: US diplomatic sources have confirmed that its ground forces
are in Pakistan and staging operations inside Afghanistan from Pakistani
bases. US is planning to prepare more forward operation bases inside
Afghanistan to facilitate the operations of its marine units. These
units are trying to locate and eliminate top leadership of Al Qaeda and
Taliban. The need to use Pakistani bases as deployment posts has
enhanced after a full scale ground operation launched inside
Afghanistan. Troops from the 101st Airborne Division are conducting
security mission from bases in Pakistan where American Special
Operations forces are located. US diplomatic sources however said that
there were no immediate plans to deploy the airborne troops into
Afghanistan. The forces based in Pakistan are sort of back up force for
the security of the forces operating inside Afghanistan. Additional
ground troops will be moving to within striking distance of Afghanistan,
these sources said. 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit is to sail from San
Diego on Saturday aboard Bonhomme Richard along with two support ships.
The 2,200 marines are expected to relieve members of the 15th Marine
Expeditionary Unit, many of whom have deployed at the base in southern
Afghanistan. Pakistan foreign office has consistently denied that any US
forces were on ground in Pakistan and that no operation was launched
from Pakistani soil. But The Frontier Post can report that Pakistan
bases had been used to deploy US ground forces in Afghanistan. Some of
the retired military experts interviewed by this correspondent said that
the helicopters being used by the US forces for landing into areas close
to Qandahar Ah-1 and AH-2 were short range machines and had been using
Pakistan's airfields.
