There was couple of reason I converted to Islam, but the main two reasons were:
§      TRUTH
§      ONENESS of ALLAH

Islam was introduce to me through my mother at early age to understand other religions besides Catholicism.  As I was getting older, I was questioning my teachings.  Like, Why are we worship Jesus (Pbuh) as son of God but yet God tells us not to worship anything other then him, or How are we to believe how accurate the scriptures Jesus (Pbuh) brought with him when they were written a century after his passing.  These were some of the question of out of many I had.

Then my mother pass away and my hurt and anger turn toward God and the world.  I was anger and hurt for couple years then something within me started to change.  I ask God for forgives and it seem like he always there, waiting for me to come back to him.  I went back to church but those questions and doubts were still in back of my mind.

Then I learn my father was dying from cancer.  I went to see him to give him my two cents but instead I did not.  When I saw him come out of his friend car, I saw not only a man dying but also my father.  I knew then he does not have to answer to me but instead to God when he passes away.  After he died, something within me changes again.

I did not go back to Catholic Church but only when my family went, only out of respect.  I then went a little soul searching.  I look into other Christianity religions as well as the Jews faith but again they seem not to yearn for me.  Then something pops into my mind, Islam.  I started to read information about the Islam religion on the Internet and it seem like God himself was pulling me towards this religion.  I felt this was what I was seeking.  Then I went out two months ago and brought the Qur’an.  The moment I started to read the Al-Fatiha, I knew this was what I was seeking all this time.

Since I took my Kalima-Shahada, I feel happier and closer to God then before.  I hope through the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (Pbuh) I will become a better person then I think I am as well as bring me closer to my family then it is already.

Assalam u a’laikum wa rahmatu Allah!

I would like any information I can use.  I also was wondering if any one knows What James is in Arabic?  I would like to have a Muslim name so I can be known as to the Muslim community by one name and outside the community by my surname. I have most of the five daily prays down, I know them in English then Arabic, but I would like to know about the other prays.  I would like more information about woman in Islam, the Islam religon, more on the Prophets but with Islam view of point ( I only know about the prophets through my Catholic teachings which are wrong.) as well as more on Islam religon.

Assalamualaikum wr wb

ALhamdulillah, praise to ALlah for bringing you to the path of Islam.  My dua that you will continuously feel the beauty of Islam.

What kind of information do you require ? Feel free to post any questions on the board.  Insya'ALlah the members here are very helpful and will try to help you out.

With regards to Arabic for James, emmm I am stumped. But I have always thought the name Yusuf is beautiful and its easily pronounced if you are not native Arab speaking, wallahualam.

Hope to see you around the boards often.

assalaamu alaikum

Congratulations on your conversion brother James, i and everyone here are very happy for you. *smile*

I love reading stories of people who took the shahada, i find them very inspiring. And quite interesting for me again was the fact that you say that it was reading the Qur'an that made you click onto Islam.

I have seen and heard so many people say that THE thing that convinced them of the truth of Islam was when they read a translation of the Qur'an. Alhumdulillah.

As regards the name 'James' i don't know what it means or its Arabic equivalent, but it reminds me of something i heard a few years ago: that James was the name of the brother of the Messenger Jesus.

Obviously this is something we can only speculate on (until perhaps when the Prophet Jesus can tell us himself when he returns insha'llah *smile*) but the fact that Jesus was born of a virgin birth, doesn't negate the fact that Mary, peace be upon her, might have married later in her life and had kids with her husband. And Allah knows best.

As salamu alaykum Brother,

Al hamdu lillah that you found your way to Islam.  Insha'Allah you will find a spiritual peace that you have never known before.  As for James I don't think that there is a translation or at least I have never been told of one.

From my brief research on the Internet, James is derived from Jacob, the son of Issac.  In Arabic, Jacob is Yaqub.  So welcome, Brother Yaqub!

Welcome to the board :) I was born muslim and I have never studied other books like the bible or torah, but I often wonder what it is that makes a convert full of conviction that Islam is true. Maybe you can answer that another time :)

humble_muslim is right! James is dervived from the hebrew Jacob. James means supplanter. i Couldn't find any arabic names that meant supplanter but I thought 'Jamal' was a nice name. Jamal means beauty.

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, brother James

Good to hear your story on coming to Islam, masha'Allah, may Allah continue to guide you and make you steadfast, aameen.
And as long as your name doesn't have a bad meaning, it's all good.  Unless, of course, you want to change your name, which is also fine.  Just keep your family/last name, so as not to "change" your lineage, and Allah knows best.  The article link explains better.

Allahummagh-firlee war-hamnee wah-dinee wa-'afinee war-zuqni.
O Allah, forgive us, have mercy on us, guide us, preserve our health/well-being, and provide for us.  Aameen.

Welcome to the board James, and welcome to Islam! :)

I love the name James. It was my father's name. I thought the name Jamil was the closest to James, phonetically. It's what I'm going to call my hypothetical future son Insha Allah.

Jamil is  a nice name. My grand-uncle-in-law's name is Jamil.

Are you 40?

Take care, James... and err.. sorry if I sound weird.
