Bhutto refers to 'Pakistan-occupied Kashmir' in speech

Was it just a slip of the tongue that had former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto refer to "Pakistan-occupied Kashmir" in her high-profile speech to the Confederation of Indian Industry.

That is how the Indians refer to the disputed territory, and Bhutto's use of the term was just an extra cherry on the top of her extraordinary charm offensive in New Delhi. Her speech could almost have been written by the Indian foreign ministry.

She proposed confidence-building measures and the normalization of frosty indo-Pak relations while allowing talks to continue over Kashmir. This may outrage a lot of Pakistani opinion, but Bhutto's strategy for a political comeback requires that she sharpen the contrasts between herself as a reasonable democrat and the military ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf who can't negotiate on Kashmir.

And as well as wooing India, that means convincing the Americans she had nothing to do with the Taliban. So trying to refute what she admitted was "the widespread perception that the Taliban was created by me," Bhutto said the Islamic extremists had twice tried to assassinate her. She also tried to placate the mosques, saying "I take my inspiration from the Holy Prophet's wife Khadija, who was herself a working woman."
