Rights of Turkish Women since the destruction of the Khilafah

Since the destruction of the Khilafah at the hands of the traitor Mustapha Kemal and his colonial masters in 1924, Turkey has taken the route of a secular government enshrined within its constitution and protected by its army and a loyal political medium that has made every effort to distance itself from Islam and the Islamic sentiments.

It is only natural that the last bastion of the Khilafah becomes the prime target for the greatest effort by the secular government and the western powers to integrate the overwhelming Muslim population into the clutches of western culture in order to distance them from their glorious Islamic heritage and accord the blame for the decline of the Turkish nation to Islam when in actuality it was Islam that gave them honour, dignity and leadership. In contrast, it was detaching of Islam from the political realm and adopting the western standards that brought her downfall and what we now witness of a crippling economy and the subsequent immense social and economic hardship upon the people.

But notwithstanding this, Turkish governments, one after another and despite the minor blip of the Refah Party coming to power (after having compromised most of the political and ruling tenets of Islam) have taken all possible steps to dilute any semblance of Islam at all levels and plunge Turkey further into wearing the western outfit at all levels, irrespective of whether it fits or is compatible with a nation that still prides itself with its Islamic Character..

Politically this destructive route has been clear since 1924 and more recently with its continual attempt to enter into the European Union. The lure of the European Union is so great that, like a drug addict, Turkey seems prepared to gamble all and commit whatever crime necessary to gain the satisfaction of entry into Europe.

Economically this has been through the enslavement created by the structural adjustment programs initiated through the IMF and World Bank, of which Turkey has the most unfortunate record of being the first recipient and one of all the many countries that have been crippled economically by the policies of these institutions who act on behalf of their western donors. While the Turkish currency has plummeted in value, prices of local commodities have soared and what is the solution adopted by the Turkish government? …adopt further economic liberalisation whilst seeking further western financial loans!!! Turkey is still suffers from paying accrued interest from the previous loans that she has taken out.

Militarily, Turkey has shown an unnerving insistence to flaunt its violations against Islam through its military strategic alliance with Israel and the recent statement by the Turkish leadership of its verbal and logistical support for the coalition bombardment of the Muslims in Afghanistan.

Clearly not content with these transgressions, Turkey once has again launched an assault on the Islamic social system, which had already been severely battered through Turkey’s tourist industry, its wide encouragement of the perverse western sexual culture that has devastated families through its media machine and legislation that bars the Muslim woman from wearing the Islamic dress code in public positions. Now, after a month of debate, the Turkish Parliament has taken the radical step of adopting far-reaching revision to the country’s civil code, formally recognising men and women as equals. The new civil code comes into effect on 1st January 2002 and as one columnist for the Hurriyet newspaper proclaimed, “Turkey is now in a position to compete with all the developed countries in the arena of women’s rights and their place in the community.”

One can no longer be astonished. Turkey has lost dignity in the political and economic realm. Attempting to follow the corrupt and dishonest western political and economic model sealed this fate. Turkey has lost the dignity in the social realm for it has removed the honour and dignity of the woman which Islam has given her to replace it with the degradation and exploitation of women as practiced and institutionalised in western culture. This is detailed in the Khilafah Magazine edition November 2001, titled, “The Honour of the Woman”

It is sufficient to briefly refer to the human rights record for women in the ‘most civilised western democratic state’ i.e. USA.

• In the USA 1.3 women are raped every minute, this translates into 78 rapes each hour, 1872 rapes each day, 56160 rapes each month and 683,280 rapes per year (Statisitcs from the National Victim Centre, NVC)
• 1 out of every 3 American woman will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime (NVC)
• 1 in 4 college women have either been raped or suffered attempted rape (NVC)
• In 1998 there were 3,170,520 arrests of women, of which 272,073 were drug related (US State Department, 1999)
• A woman is beaten every 15 seconds by her partner, it happens at some time in 25%-35% of American homes (FBI)
• 77 women die from abusive partners every week, which is 4000 a year (FBI)

All these facts are in additional to the sexploitation and commercial manipulation of women that is rife in the west, compounded with the immense pressure to take on the role of the man while still retaining her role as a woman, wife and mother.
So much for human rights and equality!!! This is the standard that Turkey has set itself and the motivation seems related to meet the necessary requirements to enter the European Union – for which Turkey’s human rights record had been a sticking point, as was its political and economic situation.

Cannot those who rule Turkey see beyond the false promises that the ‘west’ has enticed her with, and in doing so has removed the noble status it once had within the international political arena as the seat of the Khilafah?

Cannot the Muslims in Turkey see the path of its rulers are taking in selling the soul of its people to those who vanquished the honour that Islam had given her?

From whom does the ruler seek honour from? And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) says (to the nearest meaning),

“As for those who take the Kafir as allies in preference to the believers, do they hope to be honoured by them, when behold all honour (Izza) belongs to Allah alone” [TMQ An-Nisa: 139]
