Nissar Sayyed: Assalamu Alaikum

Samadani: Alaikum Salam Wa rahmathullahi wa barakatuhu

Nissar Sayyed: There was tremendous response from the viewers about the previous interview that it was thought provoking...

Samadani: That was only the result of such brilliant questions I received (from your side).

Nissar Sayyed: Anyway your answers had a profound influence on the viewers...

Samadani: The lotus will bloom only when the sun rises... (meaning that good answers will emerge on good questions)

Nissar Sayyed: This year's Ramadan includes many important occasions for other communities as well. Even in the case of Hindu community, it is a season of fasting. And so is for the Christian community.

How do you interpret this co-incidence in the light of unity of humanity that you talked about before?

Samadani: The Holy Quran refers to this month as : "O believers! Fasting is made obligatory for you as it was made obligatory for those before you". From this verse, it is very clear that the communities of the past had fasting as an act of worship. Around the world, in India for example, there is fasting on one form or the other. When the Hindu devotees go for the Ayyappa Darshan in the Shabari Mala season, they observe some for of fast. Other faiths also have similar practices.

But if we look at it from a more broader perspective, there is fasting for species outside man. For example, scientists have discovered certain birds who, after eating for some days, sit in the nest without eating anything for certain number of days. Another set of snakes also practice fasting in a different manner.

In fact if we ponder over this, there is an interesting phenomenon that Man is the ONLY creature that keeps eating all the time.

Every creature, after having what it requires, leaves the food. It is difficult to find among animals the habit of continuously eating food.

Science has arrived at the conclusion that the food habit of man has to be CONTROLLED. All forms of medical treatment- be it homeopathy, Ayurvedic, allopathic, naturopathy- every system is focusing on the food habit of man.

We are living at a time when we need to pay greater attention to the advice of Holy Prophet "Man has filled no bowl as bad as the stomach".

Studies conducted show that wrong food habit is the source for majority of the diseases.

When a man suffers a heart attack, he is admitted to the ICU. The ICU treatment is like another fasting. He is given nothing and thus he gets well. At times, he is given a few medicines. But that is rare.

Nissar Sayyed: You have mentioned the external aspect of fasting related to food. What, in your opinion should be the fasting of the mind?

Samadani: In fact, fasting is the mind. As the saying goes 'All's related to mind'. The center of man's complete actions is mind. Therefore, only if the mind has fast, the body will be in fast. That is why Holy Prophet wonders at the case of those who keep fast and gain nothing but remaining hungry and thirsty. Fasting also keeps a check on the carnal desires of man which in the present world has taken the shape of a monster about to destroy humanity. The arts, literature, movies and media are promoting it without realizing its consequences.

Fasting also promotes brotherhood. Although other faiths have fasting, in Islam this mode of worship reaches its perfection. No drinks. No eatables. Neither vegetarian nor Non-vegetarian. Fating for eyes and ears. And for tongue as well which is very crucial.

Nissar Sayyed: Anyway, you have given a very brief but integrated opinion covering the different aspects of this month of fasting.

Samadani: May I add one more point. What religions need today is the spiritual training of the individual. Communalism is the result of its lacking in the followers. Religions should emphasize on the spiritual purification of the individual. There is no good in forming organizations nor in holding marches and protests... Religion will not triumph through such methods. What religions need is individuals who are purified within themselves. Let all religions focus on that. Let the faiths produce good men who love each other. Calm and mature in understanding.

Let every creed focus on the inner light of man. Viewed from that perspective, fasting has been a blessing for all communities. That is our findings of the past and present as well.

Nissar Sayyed: We along with the viewers wish you all the best and express our gratitude for your time.

Samadani: Gratitude to you too. In this rat-race world, I am fortunate to see your team has come forward to focus on serious issues of life.

As one among the viewers, I too thank you for your initiative.
