What have you done with your degree?
Merimda

Salam,

"So what year are you in?"

"My last"

"What are you going to do after you graduate?"

"Haven't decided yet."

How many times have I had this arise in a conversation...too many times..

Sisters, I'm wondering, for those who have gone to University or are currently in University, what have you done or what are you intending to do with your degree?

Share with us your future plans..

And for those who are past that stage.. did things turn out the way you planned it? What did you end up doing?

asalaamu alaikum,

no, here's the best one I hear:

"So what are you going to do for your career?"

"Business"

The most vague reply I have ever heard in my life...

oops, am I *not* supposed to be here? asalamu alaikum. abdullah,.

btw, my response to the thread is "business" :)

salam,

In that mock dialogue..I'm the indecisive one..I really haven't decided what I am going to do yet..that's why I would like to know if others are in the same boat as me...And for those that are not.. I'm interested in learning what they have planned.

Most of my friends in the same field as me have either applied to grad school, law school or teacher's college.

I'm considering all of those options... some more seriously than others..but to tell the truth, either I am not too enthusiastic about those options or I'm not sure if I am really up to it.

that's my situ.

btw: brothers may contribute to this thread if they wish to..

Assalamu alaikum,
Just say: I want to help Muslims.  Don't give any details.  If you're lucky, it'll stop there.  If not, be creative ;)  What are you studying anyway?
Right before I graduated, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: I wanted to live in a nice community with lots of Muslims, like in the Bay area or the DC area, and open a daycare center for Muslims which would eventually become a school.
That was the theory.
In reality, in Morocco, I was unemployed for 6 months, worked under a tyrannical boss in something that had NOTHING to do with my psych degree for a year, was unemployed for another 6 months (we moved) and now again I'm working (al hamdu lillah) in another place that has nothing to do with psych, or children, or helping Muslims for that matter... but al hamdu lillah I'm grateful to have the job, plus I have a nice boss this time :)

as salaamu alaykum,

Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatuhu!

eep...Education *shudder*...I got as far away from that as I could :)
The Practicums are AMAZING!!!  The best experience to have is to work with students!
But the classes where Professors attempted to teach us how to teach...not for me :)

So I scrapped my first degree and am now double majoring in Religion and Philosophy (groan...with 2 victory laps!).

After this...??
More school! ;-D

Insha'Allah I'll head to McGill or TO for Islamic Studies....
hmmm....maybe even Al-Ahazar... :)

and my end-goal will be, insha'Allah, an Islamic book on a Coles or Chapters' bookshelf...with my name as author!

Wasalaam wa fee aman'Allah,

As salamu alaykum

Se7en have some faith in yourself!!!!   Learning how to be a good teacher takes time.  Right now I'm interning with 7th graders.  Of course I've fallen on my face quite a few times (I'm always speaking too quickly or speaking without thinking and kids will get you for it.)   But when things go will or you help a kid it is great al hamdu lillah.  I don't think that there are as many jobs that are as rewarding and also as labor intensive.

As for what I'm doing next year, maybe I'll move to Albany.  Just kiddin.  Allahu Alem.  I never think that far in advance.

slm,

I got a degree in computer science and currently work in the IT industry. However, my true passion lies in the natural sciences, mainly biology and chemistry.

My ideal job would be to work as a doctor in one of those doctors without borders type organizations or just go back to somalia to practice medicine.

But *sigh* i have to make a living since i wasn't born with a gold spoon in me mouth.

Right now i'm considering persuing graduate studies in biomedical engineering or bioinformatics. That's the closest i can get to real biology, i think.

Allahu A'alam.

I am in the same boat as Amal...I graduated with an IT degree. My dream was to go back to Kenya and teach, or somehow further the computer industry (the gulf is huge...). But went in and out of the Dot com phase and now still working in the field...
I haven't "integrated" my vision fully, but Inshaallah I'm with M.F. on this one, changing perspectives to just say I want to help Muslims and Allah will open the way and opportunities Inshaallah.
I am now considering Islamic studies for post graduate degree:):):) it will be cool to be able to write and publish on the web....maybe teach....
Alhamdullillah:):):) the horizons are infinite when you really think about it:):):):)

Two words for the undecided ones : Istikhara Prayers:):):)

Degrees Degrees, that's all my dad ever talks about with me! "What do you want do Hajreee beta?" hehehe

well i finally made up my mind...after going through a BILLION majors... as of now- i am studying international affairs with a concentration in global public health and possibly a concentration in middle eastern studies :) inshaAllah it works out well!

what am i going to do with that degree- i have NO clue, all i know is that i really want to work in the gov't, perhaps in some health area thingy, inshaAllah!

but to me- your degree doesn't really affect or lay out what kind of job you are going to have, so it's all good in the hood :D

all rightey, take care guys!

<<What are you studying anyway?>>

Political Science and History.

I want to go to Egypt to polish up my awful Arabic..(Al 3Arabi bitay3 mish Awi..actully it's just plain awful ^_^)..Perhaps study at the Fajr Center in Cairo...then maybe I can hitch a job with Al-Jazeera (I'm dreamin)

<<Shouldn't he be saying "behti" (daughter) instead of "beta" (son)>>

In Egypt it's not uncommon for parents to call their daughters habibi..instead of habibti..

And in almost all songs...When the guys are singing to their girl lovers they refer to them as habibi not habibti

It's all Dal3a (Spoiled) language..

It's odd..

Just some thoughts.. I don't know if that's the case with beta and behti..

You're absolutely right Maliha. Allah[swt] always opens a way when least expected. Alhamdulillah, i have been very much blessed by Him.

I was spared the civil war in somalia(left mogadishu 3 months before the outbreak of the war),i learnt arabic and can now read the Qur'an and understand 80% of it,i even got a qard hasan [loan with no interest] to go to college. Alhamdulillah.

As for the career thing, i like IT intellectually but it doesn't satisfy the humane side of me. I don't know if others in the same field feel this way.

I always wanted to become a doctor. It's the best profession in the whole world, to me at least. As a kid i used to practice on insects, poor creatures :)

I would really like to go to med school but it's mighty expensive and i don't want to take a loan with riba. How do other muslims in the US pay for their tuition??

I'm in my first year of AV Media Design. It's two years in total, and at the end I'll be a Media Designer IHK. That's one of the authorities here responsible for designing courses and handing out qualifications.

Ideally, I would like to get a job in post-production..editing etc. But if that will come about or not, I don't know because by the time I'm finished I'll be 27 and Insha Allah, I'd like to have kids before I'm 30.

What the future holds, Allahu Ahlam.

Regarding the beta/beti thing...
my father in law called me beta, and my husband calls all kids beta whether they are a girl or a boy. Only in addressing them though, "hello beta, how are you?" If talking about them in the third person it's "his friend's beti"
Dunno why, dunno if it makes sense or not. He comes from Punjab region in Pakistan...if that helps.. ???

yeah...same here...i started feeling it more when i went fulltime...like "is this it???"
Inshaallah kheir though, He knows why He placed us in these positions ;):):)
As for the beta/beti conversation...can't help with my non urdu speaking skills:)
I used to love Egyptian songs growing up...
Anywayz, jus' procrastinatin:)
gotta go.
Peace:)

Salam,

<<3aamla eeh ya bint?>>
<<izzayiik?!>>

Kwayisah Alhamudillah. ^_^

lol..yup you guys know your Egyptian slang...^_^

<<Merimda, are you egyptian?>>

I am..I wasn't born or raised there though..

<<I miss Cairo loads, *sigh* specially in Ramadan.>

I have never been to Egypt in Ramadan time..but I hear it is the most awesome experience.

<<.. but I really suck at teaching..>>

I would like to teach politics and history..but that's my problem.. I'm not sure if I would be a good teacher..man I could so see the kids taking advantage of me..^_^

<<AV Media Design>>
<<I would like to get a job in post-production..editing etc.>>

That's cool
In addition to grad school, law scool and teachers college I am considering something else...^_^
Since I love history and my little br, for a while, got me hooked on Japanese animation..I really want to create a high quality Islamic History Cartoon series that would insha-Allah motivate the young and old to read up more on Islamic history...I was thinking not only to have it produced on video but actually try to get it aired on T.V in the Middle East..it was something that was on my mind before but I never really took it seriously until last year. I was really motivated last year when I was watching Dr.Yusuf al Qaradawi on Al-Jazeera (I think or it could have been Abu Dhabi t.v) discussing the Pokemon bann in Saudi Arabia..he spoke about the need for an Islamic alternative for Muslim children..

I would be more interested in research and script writing..but I am also seriously considering taking animation courses. I want to do this 3D Modeling and Animation Program and then move on to the more intensive program 3D for Broadcast Design and Animation..

yeah so that's what I would love to do..

but this all sounds so good in theory..

yes I am one confoozled person..^_^

well...this is what actually happened for those who want to know...i conducted a test, hehe....and the result is that....

*drum roll*

my dad actually says "Beta" instead of "Behti"! and you know, after i said that i felt stupid for saying beta instead of behti, i thought that "Hmm, behti sounds kinda weird and i think i was right with beta!" but yeah, grammatically speaking beta's for a boy, behti for a girl, but i think it can be used on either girls or guys, cause even my dad's friends call and say "Salamu alaikum beta, is your abba home?"

so yeah! maybe it's a punjabi thing? cause we are punjabi folks :D

anywho, so that was it, my dad calls me beta even though i'm his daughter :)

it's all good in the hood

Gotta Jet though, Exams to study for, make dua'a for me peeps!

I'd like to get a grip on 3D Animation too. We've started this week with 3D Studio Max. Subhan Allah! It's really difficult!! You have to be kind of good at geometry and maths. Not as easy as it looks!

However, Insha Allah, it'll get easier with practice. I would have loads of ideas for children's programmes too. It certainly would be something to get an Islamic cartoon series off the ground. Or even just a short film...

Yeah, I know a few ppl (non-Arabs) who have gone to the Fajr center to learn Arabic and they all recommend it.

AUC..American University of Cairo, I'm assuming. No I have never been there. Maybe I'll consider learning Arabic there as well. ^_^
