Just wonder what might have been the words used had the opposite of what about to happen involved the followers of Islaam. What's in a name? The media not applying the terrorist label consistently The State Department rolled out a new public service advertising campaign Thursday. It's intended to get "Americans to be on the lookout for terrorists and turn suspects in when you they spot them," reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Here's the text of the new ad, a brainchild of Charlotte Beers, the Madison Avenue executive that State's brought in to give them more marketing know-how. "Do You Know a Terrorist?...You May be Eligible for a Reward," the ad reads. They are due to be translated into Arabic and Spanish. One only wishes they could be translated into media-speak. When it comes to knowing "terrorists" the power press seem to need some help. When he appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee Dec. 6, Attorney General Ashcroft said the following: "Since 1983, the United States government has defined terrorists as those who perpetrate premeditated, politically motivated violence against noncombatant targets." Whatever you think of that definition, it's a pretty simple — probably over simple — concept. A man or group of men who conspire to set off pipe bombs at a mosque and at the office of a Lebanese-American Congressman, would fall into the category pretty nicely, one would imagine. But Irving David Rubin, the leader of the Jewish Defense League who, with co-defendent Earl Leslie Krugel, was charged Wednesday with just such a plot, was not called a terrorist, not even an alleged, or would-be, terrorist. Not in the San Francisco Chronicle, not in the New York Times, not in the Los Angeles Times. The papers report that the JDL was suspected in the murder of Alex Odeh, the West Coast director of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee who was killed in a bomb blast at his Santa Ana office in 1985. Irving himself was tried and acquitted in 1980 of soliciting the murders of Nazis in the United States. In one conversation, the FBI affidavit asserts, Krugel stated that "Arabs needed a wake-up call and that the JDL needed to do something to one of their 'filthy' mosques." The two defendants were caught by the FBI's Anti-Terrorism Task Force, reporters tell us. And yet the word "terrorist" is not otherwise used. Why?
