31,000 Iraqis Die From U.N. Embargo in Past Three Month

BAGHDAD, Dec 15, 2001 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Iraq's Health Ministry said on Saturday that a total of 31,079 people died in the past three months due to the U.N. embargo imposed on Iraq since 1990.
In a statement to the official Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry said that in September alone, 9,776 Iraqis died, including 6,880 children aged below 5, because of malnutrition, shortage of food and medicine and other diseases, such as diarrhoea, hypertension and malignant cancer.

This has brought the total number of people who died as a result of the embargo to 1,565,192, the statement said.

Iraq has often blamed the sweeping embargo, imposed for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait, for the suffering and deaths of its people.

A U.N. oil-for-food program, launched since 1996 and now in its 11th phase, allows Iraq to sell oil and in return for U.N.-monitored imports of food, medicine and other essentials to ease the impact of the embargo.

But Iraq complains that the oil-for-food deal has failed to meet the humanitarian needs of its 22 million people.
