Exercise/ Health clubs...

How many sisters exercise?  I exercise at home, but use to out at a health club.. I'm a little contradicting here, but I really want to go back to the gym, but found good workout tapes and  much comfort in my home...   When the Oprah show Islam 101 aired, I was proud of my fellow Muslim sister for telling the country, we do work out/ care about health and that she's out there...  I really can't find the time or maybe refuse due to being mentally lazy ... (LOL)  I enjoyed the nautilous (sp??) machines, where I can be alone...

When I did go I'd wear big over sized workout shirts, baggy sweat pants, covered hair with a towel around my neck and chest.  I would shower behind the double courtin shower, and dress in between them after or just put on my coat and leave, depending on how much I sweat...

So my question is; what do you wear, those who did or are currently working out in a health club? I know we here in Minnesota do have a health club that has alternate days for woman, but I can't afford that one, since my membership with Ballys is now a Lifetime membership it's easier to go there...

Assalamu'alikum :-)

Eversince my knee injury few months back, I haven't been working out much. But if I do, I'd wear my hijab, baggy long sleeved T-shirt that'll reach my knees (or just abt), and track bottoms.

And I shower at home... which is abt an hour away (or just abt). And no, I don't smell :) Well... haven't received any complaints! :)

InshaALlah, hopefully, I can continue again, after I complete my physiotherapy :)

Assalamu alaikum.

I wear a long sleeved t-shirt that says "Taqwaa" :)  and baggy work-out
cargo pants...the extra pockets down the sides of the legs really hide
my shape.

And my hijab with a base-ball cap...so I avoid slippage when running on
the treadmill :)

<And my hijab with a base-ball cap...so I avoid slippage when running on the treadmill>

ROFLMAO!!!!!!

Hey look, you can wear the hijab and veil and NOT look out of place if you take up Ninja Classes!!! Now come on, its great for fitness and agility, for self defence, and you have to wear a hijab!!!! BRILLIANT!!!!

Who needs all that nancy hoo haa aerobics, or yoga nonsense, you wanna do REAL training, sommer-saults, flips, roundhouse kicks, jumping from building to building, smashing blocks with your ead etc, now THAT is exciting!!! And all in the comfort of your hijab!!!

Mujaahid, I don't know if you meant to be humorous or not, but I my questions to the sisters was out of sincerity....  I was a overweight child, teen, and adult who has lost 100 lbs. and watched older relatives live with bad health issues from not eating right or exercising at all, and I wanted some feedback.   FYI  I use to do karate via private lessons from my black belt brother... I didn't like it...

May Allah reward the sisters who answered with sincerity.... I may try going this spring....

As salaamu alaikum, Denise!

I sympathize with your quandary about what to wear, what's proper for workouts, etc.

I walk everyday on my lunch break at a local mall. I usually wear baggy sweats and on my head I wear one of those stretchy buknuks from al-Hediyah (very comfy and good coverage).

Well, going to a women's college does has its advantages. When I did work out, which hasnt been this semester, since its been CRAZZZYYY :o I would be there at 7am and work out to about 745 or 8am...during this time there would be 2 or 3 other girls (since no one likes to get up soo early) and I am a MORNING person, right se7en ;) anyways I would wear regular sweats, a long t-shirt (with a short one underneath) b/c when I was WORKING out, I mean REALLY WORKING out I would take off the long t-shirt,(cause I sista was working out)...anyways and I would wrap my hijab turban style, like the bun style at the bottom (sorta like eryah badu), but when I was going to the gym,(when I was outside) I had a large scarf covering me(duparta). The fact that a go to the gym sooo early is a major plus b/c not many females are there and the guys (from the other college---they are part of our college...long story---check it out at www.sage.edu if you want more info, lol) anyways the guys from the basketball team tend to come on certain days/hours, and I know these times(they come in the evenings,etc.).

Anyways, when I would jog, which was last semester with my residents and its not going to happen now, lol, I would wear long t-shirt/sweat pants and my hijab tucked inside my shirt and this is the same way I wear it when I would bike (which I love to do) and I would like (a bike)that as a present for my graduation, se7en and the mafia sisters ;)
But for my b-day I got an awesome gift---balance balls(excercise balls/therapy balls)...they are phat man----I love those things and trust me you will sweat with those balls, dont let them trick you...by thinking oh they are just balls what can they cant do anything to me---lets just say that I was in pain the next day, wooooooooo what a work out I had...anyways I hope you can get something out of this...oh yeah another thing, I know a sister who goes to a all female gym so thats cool, u know---u are more relaxed and stuff BUT you still have to be careful u know...aight

peace

Hey Denise..don't let the bro' get you down..we've seen and heard it all before from him.. (check older threads for details)..

Laboogie, man I'm still laughing after your post... ;-D

Barr.... my fingers are itching but I won't say a thing... *I have been warned!!*

Well, let me tell you..I don't work out *at all* and it's showing!! Up until leaving school..oh..seven years ago.. I played hockey and volleyball. Twas an all girl school but I wasn't Muslim so didn't matter..I ran around in little shorts and skimpy skirts...
Man, I'm so lazy!! I wish I could get motivated and *do* something, I think I need a bunch of motivated sisters á la MR. MOTIVATOR to motivate me off the sofa and away from the PC and go and do something..*lol* ;-D
I'd like to join a gym, but they can be very expensive...
hmmm...
my fingers are very fit though, from all this typing.

Assalamu alaikum,
I'm totally unmotivated as well.  I'll start an exercise program (always a video at home by myself) and get through it once or twice and be all motivated and feel great, and then the next week I'll be like: I'm so bored with this video, and I have to work out all alone, and I can't see the results anyway (cause I've never stuck to anything long enough to see results :)) so what's the point!! I just tire myself out for nothing.
This is the worst attitude anyone could have about exercise, but that's my attitude.  I'd love to go to a gym with a friend who'd keep me motivated and force me to go, but there's no gyms nearbye that have enough privacy and women only times. And there's no friend nearbye to go with me!
Now the worst thing about me is that I used to be a skinny person.  In fact I used to try to GAIN weight when I was in high school.  I gained a little weight after I got married, and I keep expecting to automatically go back to really skinny with no effort on my part. It's been two and a half years.  Should I keep on waiting? :) ;)

Salaams,
MF, you should try to collar a friend into coming over and working out, you'll only need 3X a week, more if you want to lose weight, not just maintain it. My sister and I used to workout to videos together, it was fun. I also get tired with my videos, even though we have about 15! Tae bo is a very exciting video! Also, maybe you should see if you can purchase exercise equipment to use while watching TV or something?
