Hajab's? First off am I spelling that right :)

Are they a standard size? What is the prefered or standard size?

Are they to be of a specific fabric? Color? What is allowed and what is not allowed in the way of colors or designs on the fabric?

Why do some wear this and others a fuller covering like in Afganistan? Sorry I forgot what they call them there.
THank You for your answers.

Hi Cara :)
you spelt it right in the subject line, Hijab (pronounced as Hi- as in the hi part of "his" and jaab- as in the jab part of "take a jab at" )
Literally, it means a veil or covering, generally it refers to the way (the entire dress and not just the scarf part though usually most ppl only mean this) muslim women are required to dress. There are certain conditions to be met for the hijab to be considered right. First of all the dress must cover the entire body- including the head and neck- except the face and hands from the wrist(there are some who beleive that covering these are also obligatory, but even for those who do not believe that, they do aggree that veiling the face is a rewardable thing). Secondly, the dress must be loose and not fitting to reveal the figure. It should be thick and opaque. It should not be attention-seeking. It should not resemble the dress of men. It should not be something that is characteristic of the non-muslim (this is not to say that if a Christian woman wears jeans the Muslim woman cannot but dressing up in a way that is typical or characteristic of a certain belief is not permissible for muslims in general). Lastly, it should not be a dress of vanity, meaning the woman does not wear somehting to "show off".

Any dress that meets these criteria is a hijab and is suitable for muslim women.

As for the scarf part of it, no it doesn't have to be any specific colour, material or dimensions. Anything that covers the head including ears, the neck and is long enuff to cover the bust area is appropriate. Unfortunately most women forget to follow the last part of it.

It's improtant to note that hijab is not just a way of dressing, what i've outlined above are only the physical requirements. Hijab is an enitre attitude, it's a frame of mind, and as with everything else in islam, its meaning is deep and the outward acts are only a medium to gain inward peace and nearness to our Creator.

I hope this helped somewhat. There's a whole lot of stuff on this topic on this site and elsewhere on the net. You can check out these as well:

If you having chiffon or material cut off a bale to have it hemmed into a scarf, then we measure it out to 1 meter, 10 centi meters to make a perfect square.  This is for the type that you fold diagonally to use.

This may differ in the country you are from, depending on what the width of the fabric bales are.

The reason why some women cover All is that there is a difference of opinune about a verse that orders it.
whether it refears to all Muslim women or just the women of the household of the prophet.
And there is also a difference of opinune about other text stating that women must uncover face during huj and when doing a contract.
because some people say the fact that women must uncover face during huj and contracts means they are allowed to always keep face uncovered while others say it is only refearing to the above mentioned situations.

One of the things that's very cool about Islam is that.. there are rules about doing things, but there's also room for diversity and differences.

The hijab is a perfect example of this.. aside from the basic rules abc put up, the color or design or style is entirely up to you :)  We actually had a whole thread on hijab styles before, you can check it out here. :)

take care :-)
