Hair? Long? Short? Or doesn't matter?

With Islam is there a preference to the length of a womans hair? Just curious. In a branch of a Christian religon they believe hair is a womans crown/glory and is not to be cut. Or something like that. Is there anything about it in the Quran and with Islam?

What do most of the sisters prefer? Are things like braiding allowed or is it considered vain?

Also what about jewelry? Is it ok or frowned upon? Do Muslims also do the wedding ring thing?

asalamu alaikum,

from what I understand, women should make their hair distinctively female- which is typically long or medium.  Short hair is discouraged since it may try to blur the line between gender identifiers.

As well, another reason for long hair - hair long enough to cover your awrah (your chest) is because on the Day of Judgement I believe Insha'Allah, you will be naked in front of the Lord Praise Be to Him, and since the female breast is a private part it will be covered for the woman's sense of shame.  lol I remember when I had long hair, even though I don't have to cover anything lol... I believe that shoulder-length hair was a sunnah of Isa Alahysalaam (Jesus).  Lets get a second opinion on this. asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

We talked a little about this before here.

As for jewelry, it's all good as far as I know :)  There's a bit of a debate about the wedding ring, but for the most part it's said to be fine as long as there's no exchanging of rings type ceremony that would be in imitation of other religions.

And Allah knows best.

ps - I was at a conference and met this brother who had hair to his shoulders, a long-ish beard, and was wearing a kifaya [cloth draped on the head] and abaya [long robe].  He said one of his non-Muslim friends calls him Gaspar (one of the three wise men of the Christian tradition)

Thought that was funny :)

In response to brother Abdullah's post, where he said that a woman's hair would be long enough to cover up her awrah which would include her breast, what about her other private part? and what about for guys?

and as always, if i say something offensive or rude, please forgive me.

On a practical note - I'm not Muslim but I noticed that when I wore a two-piece hijab for Scarves for Solidarity that it was really hard to get my medium length layered hair to lie smooth under the veil.

Since it wasn't long enough to pull it all back in a bun or pony tail it was all lumpy!  I also had to worry about little shorty pieces from the layers around my face sticking out from under the veil like little antennae!

Carole,
I had the same experience when I first started to wear hijab i used to have bangs and it was antenae head. Then I thought i can use bobby pins to put it back, so i ended up with Klingon head. haha Then I had B&E head, as i start to wear a clean nylon sock cut off to hold it back smoothly without the major bumps.
Growing my hair long was definately a good thing alhemdulilah!
:)

Cara I think most say to grow it out. Also to color it on the red shades, especially henna. Braids were encouraged and thought to be a sign of beauty when the prophet saws was alive. I think his wives, our mothers, undid their breads after his deaths saying they didn't want to look good anymore. There is a saying of the beloved i think that means if Allah has blessed you with hair then be good to it (literally it means generous with it) cleaning it and putting the oils etc

I was reading a booklet about jewelery just before zakat. Insha'Allah i will write down a few main points about when it is frowned upon, but for the most part it is ok. I think there are more restrictions on men from this aspect.

Shoirt and simple anser is that a woman cut her hair to any length, provided she does not completely cut/shave it off.  Short hair is OK, but shouldn't make a woman look like a man.

I was just curious. Some beliefs I know think a womans hair should be long. I know here in the US the Apostolics believe as such.I myself feel much more feminen (Darn my spelling) when my hair is long.

I had 13 inches cut off it this past spring cause my husband was wondering what it would look like just below my shoulders (It was past my waist back then) and to be honest it was getting kind of dry looking on the ends. But my hair grows very fast and I am happy because since I cut it in April it has already grown 5 inches or more as it is below my shoulder blades now  :)

Personally I think braids are practical with long hair. And I like to do two french braids. When working in the garden or with my horses is is much better also.

As for jewelry I only wear my wedding ring and my ears are pierced so I wear earrings. I was wondering if jewelry was frowned upon. Again some cultures agree and disagree with it.

By the way I know the Bible speaks against tatoos. (No I don't have any :)  )  Does the Quran speak of tatoo's? I remember being so heart broken when one of my sons got one. Both of my sons are so clean cut I was shocked when the youngest got one. I didn't like the idea of him marking his body like that.

Anyone notice I have many questions ???    :)

<Anyone notice I have many questions>

No we don't notice coz we love answering them :)

As others have said there's no restriction on  the length of a womens' hair, only that it should not be shaved off completely or done in a style that is common for men.

And yes, tatoos are not allowed for Muslims either. It does not say so in the Quran, but there are ahadith (sayings/traditions of the prophet pbuh) supporting this view.

Jewelry is permissible for women. I don't know about the ones made out of bones though, like the ones made out of elephant tusks. For men, gold is not permissible.

Take care :)

Good question. They're also not allowed to wear silk. I always thought it had something to do with the fact that men are not allowed to emulate feminine traits such as wearing gold.......but what about silver jewellry and silk ties worn with a suit?????

Assalamu alaikum...I might be able to shed some light on that from some help from ISLAM-QA.com...

this is the excerpt....

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbaas reported that the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw a gold ring on a man’s  hand. He took it off and threw it aside, saying, "Would any of you take a burning coal and hold it in his hand?" When the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had gone away, someone said to the man, "Take your ring and benefit from it (i.e., sell it)." He said, "No, by Allaah, I will not take it after the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has thrown it away." (reported by Muslim, no. 2090).

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al’Aas reported that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever of my ummah wears gold and dies wearing it, Allaah will deny him the gold of Paradise. Whoever of my ummah wears silk and dies wearing it, Allaah will deny him the silk of Paradise." (Reported by Imaam Ahmad).

This prohibition applies to men only, not to women, as ‘Ali, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took a piece of silk in his right hand and a piece of gold in his left, and said: "These are forbidden for the males of my ummah." (reported by al-Nisaa’i and Abu Dawud).
