Stupid things you do before you become Muslim....

When I was young, rebellious and admittedly not very bright I got two tattoos.  They are there to stay - mostly because I cannot afford to have them removed.

I know that tattoos are haram in Islam.  But what about someone who got the tattoos before (in this case more than a decade) before they even knew about Islam, let alone made their Shahadah?

Will this be a problem for me when I revert?

When you revert, all your sins from the past are forgiven. No matter what you did, it's erased and you have a new start. Alhamdulillah.

In your case I'm not sure if you can leave the tatoos on or not. I know for certain you will be forgiven for getting them in the first place, but some may be of the opinion that you should try to get them removed.

let's see what the wiser ones have to say...    :)

Dr. Siddiqqi (former ISNA president) said:
It is Haram to have tattoos on the body. However, the Prophet -peace be upon him- said, “Islam takes away the sins done before it.” If these tattoos cannot be removed easily or if you have to spend money to remove them, then you should not worry about them. When Hajj becomes obligatory on you, you should perform Hajj and do not neglect Hajj because of tattoos on your body. No one should stop you from going to Hajj because of tattoos. I have seen hundreds of pilgrims, men and women, who come from some countries and they have all kinds of tattoos on their faces and bodies. It is forbidden in Islam, but among some tribes in Africa, unfortunately, it is still practiced, even among Muslims.

AWW,
No problem man, revert and all sins are forgiven. You'll be clean like a new born baby !

One day when you have enough money then remove the tattos. Until then try and learn more about the religion.

Membership to Islam has so many benefits, and one of them most valued is all your past sins are forgiven, so welcome to the fold sister :).

salaams

Bismillah and salam,
I found this in islamonline.org
The mufti here was Sheikh Dr. siddiqi

Question  I have a tattoo from when I was a non-Muslim. Now that I am a Muslim, do I have to have it surgically removed? It's always covered under clothing.

Answer It is not allowed to have tattoos on your body. A Muslim should not have tattoos. If the tattoo that you have has an image or something un-Islamic then you should have it removed. Otherwise, you can keep it if it causes hardship for you to have it removed surgically. It is a good idea to keep it covered under the clothing

Thanks for the replies!  Fortunately both of the tattoos are on my back - so neither will ever be seen by anyone but my husband and perhaps a physician.

I have, since posting this question, seen answers from Imams regarding this type of situation.  It appears that I do not have to have them removed as the removal is both expensive and very painful and likely to leave scars or remnants of the tattoos anyway.

So long as they were applied to my body before embracing Islam and I do not get any more tattoos after embraceing Islam there is no ruling requiring me to have them removed.

I guess they can serve as a very good reminder of why you shouldn't do stupid things like this!
