The Horns of Shaytan

As Salamu Alaykum,

A older Muslim friend of mine called me yesterday, and asked me if I wanted to go to Asr Salaat with him at the small Masjid close to home.  I declined....

I know this upset the older Muslim, whom I respect, and whom I care about.

But, even greater than my love for my Muslim family, is my fear of Allah SWT.

Volume 1, Book 10, Number 562:
Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle forbade the offering of two prayers:
1. after the morning prayer till the sunrises.
2. after the 'Asr prayer till the sun sets.

Volume 1, Book 10, Number 561:
Narrated Muawiya:

You offer a prayer which I did not see being offered by Allah's Apostle when we were in his company and he certainly had forbidden it (i.e. two Rakat after the Asr prayer).

Volume 1, Book 10, Number 560:
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "There is no prayer after the morning prayer till the sun rises, and there is no prayer after the Asr prayer till the sun sets."

Book 004, Number 1807:
Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do not intend to observe prayer at the time of the rising of the sun nor at its setting, for it rises between the horns of Satan.

And for the timing of the Asr prayer there are numerous hadiths:

Book 1, Number 1.1.9:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yazid ibn Ziyad that Abdullah ibn Rafi, the mawla of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked Abu Hurayra about the time of the prayer. Abu Hurayra said, "Let me tell you. Pray dhuhr when the length of your shadow matches your height, asr when your shadow is twice your height, maghrib when the sun has set, isha in the first third of the night, and subh in the very first light of dawn," i.e. when the dawn has definitely come.

The time for Asr prayer at the masjids around here are at 3:30PM, and the Xuhr is at 2PM,  while sunset is at 4:20PM or so.  I find that the sunnah and the practice of the masjids in my community are not in accordance. I measure the Asr prayer to be around 1:50PM and Zuhri to be at 11:50PM or so. So at work and on the weekend I pray according to the shadow's position according to Sunnah.

The Quran tells us to pray at the early fixed times, and do not delay the prayer.  So in my adherence to sunnah and Quran I find myself abstaining from visits to the masjid for fard prayers, and when I do go it is for their fard and my nafil.

I would like to go to the leaders of the Masjids with this but, in lieu of other attempts to bring up much lighter issues, I have met with much resistance in even offering basic evidences that lead to the decisions to conduct affairs the way they are.

I do have a deep desire to attend masjid as much as possible, but I cannot allow the practice that goes on there to disrupt what I feel and know to be the better way of incorporating the sunnah today.

Another problem I face at the masjid is the fact that there are Christmas lights set up.  That really get me distracted, and I disapprove of its being there.

At another Masjid, the Imam was just interviewed and I heard him say that he believes Muslims have to wage Jihad against extreme elements of al-Islam, and I cannot bring myself to pray behind this Imam any longer.

Any discussion or suggestions on the matter may assist me in overlooking what needs to be overlooked, or pursuing greatly other Masjid alternatives with intensity otherwise.

Regards,

QAK

Which area do you live in Akbalkhan?

I live in the Chicago Area.  I am not at a loss for finding masjids, as there are many.  But I just do not have a lot of time to find new ones.  I know that I am holding the Imams to a high level of scrutiny, and I really want to look past these things.  But when it comes to the time for prayer, I do not compromise.  When I go to masjid, sometimes I place one hand over the other, and do not raise my hands with each takbir so as not to disrupt others concentration, or draw unwanted attention to myself.  I have had people tell me that to hold my hands at the sides, Maliki style, and to raise the hands in takbir was not respectful, or improper, among other things.  I was rather disappointed in the level of knowledge these 'mawlana's' had, and even more so their tolerance for other sunnah.  So my new found knowledge of the sunnah of prayer times has me in a corner where I hate the actions of those who act better than other people, and I realize I may be committing these actions by not going to masjid for fard, but also recognize the importance of not compromising deen when it comes to such important acts such as worship.

Why did you ask? 'bout the area and all...

QAK

I just wanted to check out the prayer timings for your area.  I checked IslamicFinder.com ... dang, what you said is correct.  I don't understand why the masaajid there are having the prayers so late!

Are you sure that the prayer timings you have for the masaajid are for the month of December and not June or something?

I am positive.  The Zuhri never moves from 2PM, and the asr is 3 or 3:30PM.  I think there are 3 different Zuhr times in the masjids within a 1 or 2 mile radius.

So a lot of times when I go for Zuhri, I end up praying Asr right afterwards, alone.

Shukran for your efforts.
