As Salamu Alaykum,

Tonight my little brother has embraced al-Islam and taken the shahada. Al Hamdu Lillah, Al Hamdu Lillah, Al Hamdu Lillah.

To break down the convo for you, in the event that it may aid you in your dawah efforts, here goes:

We do not know how much time any of us has, we are not promised tomorrow, or the next.  There are many people who believe that this physical world is all that there is, and that it is best to enjoy the time you have, Carpe Diem, and Live Life to the Fullest, and all that.  But if this life is all that there is, then explain to me where or what is the world I see when I go to sleep, or explain to me how I have an imagination.  Explain to me how all of those exemplary men who are called prophets, described to us the exact same life after this one, and gave us the description of the road that takes us there.

People will tell you that there are many roads, and that we must follow- which ever one we are most comfortable with, but that the most important thing is to pick one.  They will also try to tell you that they all lead to the same place, and that they are all equally compelling.  But there is truly one road, the straight road.  Then I asked him: " What does a cop tell you to do when he suspects that you are intoxicated, and have been driving on the road?"  "He tells you to walk the line on the road, without faltering, in a straight manner."  I told him: " And when someone is drunk with life and the things of this world, it is impossible for them to walk the straight road."

That straight path is a road that is hidden from view. (He is in high school by the way, a Junior)  The roads that are available to you right now, who have counselors, and advisors, teachers and supervisors, peers and co-athletes, friends and associates, are all at your liesure and fingertips.  These are the obvious roads.  But tell me what comes easier, those things that are of little value or the most precious things?  The most precious road is one that seems most unattractive to you right now, in light of where you are being steered, and encouraged, both at school and in your free time.

Work, friends, daily maintenance, eating, sleeping, studies, are all things that we must accomplish by the pure momentum of society and our era.  But what makes us truly human, is our ability to not only do those things, but do them with dignity and according to a code set down by a power that looks over us in this life and the next.

When I was your age, if you had come to me and told me that there was this path, and it was the path followed by the Last Prophet of God (salallahu alayhis wa salam) and by all prophets.  And if I followed this path, I would be righteous, and successful in this life and the next.  And you then described to me this path, which is al-Islam, and that I needed to leave off having girls as friends, and partying, and that I had to pray 5 times a day, and fast during Ramadhan, and feed the needy, and plan to make Hajj.  Well I would have told you, "Go fly a kite!"  Of course I would encourage you to follow al-Islam in every way, and forbid you from wrong actions like the ones I mentioned before, but I understand the pressures you face and the challenges of realizing fully what becoming Muslim means.  Sometimes the most important and hardest step in a journey is the first one out the door, and this is what I am encourageing you to do.  I will help you the rest of the way, and you will come along at your own pace and level of understanding.

But what I am telling you is that al-Islam is a distinct religion.  A way of life set apart from all others.  It is the only religion that I know of, where in our traditions, called hadiths, or facts, recorded by so-and-so, who heard from so-and-so, who heard directly from the Last Prophet of God (SAWS), and all of whom were of the utmost righteousness and truthfulness established by companionship and a knowledge of their actions and lives, it is said that one who proclaims 'la illaha ilallah, wa Muhammedar Rasulullah'  and who lives the entirety of their lives worshipping none but the one true God, shall enter heaven.

I told him:  You do not have to change over night and be a better Muslim than I am, but at the very least declare your belief, if you believe, so as to avoid a terrible punishment, and stand to gain the best of rewards.

If I were to not talk to or see you after tomorrow, for the rest of your life.  I would be satisfied that I conveyed to you the message that has settled my heart about the next life, and that I feel I was placed here to give to you.  If you were to make the shahadah, and stick to it, I would feel safe that you have pleased God and will be pleased with God for an eternity.

I bring this message to you not out of any hope for money, or love, or benefit from you, but out of a concern and love for you now and in the next life.

I asked him: So what do think?

He said: O.K.

O.K.?

Yes, I want to do it.

Repeat after me, and then go and take a bath.

La Illaha Ilallah, wa Muhammadar Rasulullah.
There is none worthy of worship except the One True God, and Muhammed is the Messenger of God.

Al Hamdulillah, Al Hamdulillah, Al Hamdulillah

Regards,

QAK

Wow! Ma sha Allah!!! Al hamdu lillah!!! Allahu Akbar!!!
Who would ever think that words so deep would reach the heart of someone who is a junior in high school nowadays.  He must be really mature ma sha Allah.
Be sure and tell him about this board so that he can meet other Muslims his age for support and encouragement.
whenever I hear about someone becoming Muslim it makes me SOOO happy :-)  One of my greatest hopes in life is that one day Allah will guide someone through me, not that I know anything about giving da'wa, except trying to set a good example...

Shukran Brothers and Sisters for your replies.

Ameen to your dua's.

The easy part for me is convincing people to bare shahada.  The hard part is teaching them adab and the amal of the Muslim, and continuing to foster good relations and set a good example.

He is very mature for his age, insha'Allah.  Unfortunately, this maturity that can be found in a lot of younger people these days is often times the result of having been exposed to so much more so much sooner due to media and society.  The ability to avoid the common pitfalls of knowing so much more sooner, and being exposed to potentially harmful information is even rarer.  Also, an overconfidence pervades many of the younger generation that puts them out of reach of the older generations seemingly arcane and antequated notions of traditional values and adherence to these out of respect for times and people gone by.  There is a kind of irreverance and a kind of superiority comlex among his generation and those coming.  They believe that due to technology and advances in sociology and science, and the amount of exposure that common people have to these complicated and fine tuned industries and skills affords a sort of safety from making old mistakes and think that it replaces learning from those who thrived without them.  There is something to be said for us who can still compute the calculus and graph the quadratics by hand, mutliply and divide in our heads, typeset by eye, sweep a rug, and still till the soil with a pick ax and shovel. (Really, I am a young, old fogie).

Thanks again guys, and I will ask him to make dua for you all. (I know how much the new reverts dua's are worth!!)

Regards,

QAK

The other day, i received the best email i've ever had.Three other people also receieved this email. It was from a guy who was a rabbi of the highest authority. He said he needed 4 witnesses to recite the following..
Ash hadu anna la illaaha illalla wa ash hadu ana Muhammad arrasulullah. :) subhanallah. He reverted to Islam. and whats amazing is that he was no common jew, he was a rabbi who was at the top of the jewish heirarchy.
