AWW,

It looks like India and Pakistan are going to go to war soon. May Allah forbid.

What do you think the consequences are if ther do go to war ?

Pakistans first nuclear strike option is India, I guess if India follows after 20 mins then its all over for both countries and perhaps the world. What are your thoughts on the growing threat between the two negihbours ?

salaams

i don't think the nuclear option will be used as quickly and quite as simply as that, even if war does break out. both sides have the capability and this is strongest detterent of its use on the population. anyone authorising a use of such a weapon will know that they are also bringing death and destruction on their own people by a retaliation.

I agree with Imran...i don't think resorting to nuclear weapons will happen so soon and i think it would take ALOT of time and consideration before any country would use them, *including India and Pakistan*! you know, i was reading my international affairs book and they were talking about the Cuban Missile Crisis and how the US didn't use nuclear weapons as a way to strike back at the Soviets for placing missiles in Cuba because nuclear weaponry does more damage then we are even aware of...the consquences would amount to a great number that no country would want to bear that on their hands...

still and all, i just don't think India or Pakistan will resort to that measure and hopefully they will not have to and hopefully, Allah forbid, there is going to be any outbreak of war!

scary thread- it's scary how countries can actually still fight today...it's all about power, balance of power, institutions and lack of knowing the other country's identity *and yes, i combined all three thoughts of international relations, realism, liberalism and constructivism/identity* but it's just plain old sad!

i hope inshaAllah war will become obselete!!!

anywho, take care and Wa Salaams

Nothing will happen. The current crisis will boil over as they have in the past. Well, thats what I think anyway :) Every year we see increased tensions, artillery exchanges followed by increased army deployments and war cries from both sides while the rest of the world cries "Nukes! Nukes! WW3!".

Pakistan will only resort to nukes if its existence is theatened or if Indian Strike Corps punch deep into Pakistani territory. In the latter case tactical nukes will be used against the advancing armoured columns. However, neither will happen. Indians are calling to strike pakistan for its alledged support of militant groups and the recent attack on the indian parliament, which I should add India has thus far provided Zero evidence to prove any pakistani involvement. Even the US has asked India to share its evidence with no result.

If any action takes place it will only be limited air strikes against camps in Pakistan Kashmir, possibly army positions over the LoC and a few high profile targets which it wants to publizie in Nato style briefings to the rest of the world. Pakistan will respond in kind but keep it localised. Neither country wants an all-out war, because of the nuclear dilemma and moreso because of their economies -India's economy is doing well and would not want to derail its growth. Pakistan's economy is in a precarious position and any wide scale war will deal it with a KO blow. It will be a limited war with specific political goals in mind for both sides to cater for. India wants to highlight Pakistan as a terrorist supporting nation, thus isolating it and there is no better time than now. The indians have miserably failed to do so in the past. As for Pakistan, it is already in a tough position and will try to bag indian aircraft, the domestic political capital of this would override any perceived losses by strikes on camps on its territory.

The question is, if and when any shooting starts, can the commanders keep their cool?

I think explorer analysed the whole issue well. Neither country could afford a war now. It's just a high pitch rhetoric game.

Yesterday, India reduced the strength of Pakistan embassy and disallowed use of Indian airspace for PIA. And there was a  tit-for-tat reply from Pakistan, reducing the strength of Indian embassy and no airspace of Indian Airlines.

I feel India would give up to international pressure and not resort to even a limited air strikes on the training camps in Pakistan's part of Kashmir.

There's an huge deployment of troops on both side of the border. But there has been only the routine artillary and mortar fire from both sides. With both sides accusing each other daily of starting it. An all-out war would be disastorous for both countries. As explorer pointed out, India's economy is doing well inspite of world wide recession. And India would not want to disturb it.

Excellent article I received via e-mail:

Will Pakistan fulfill the dream of the Qadiyani?

As Pakistan gears up to counter the possible attack for India, there are certain factors that cannot be ignored. It must be appreciated that the "war against terrorism" which really manifests as a "war against Islam" involves the unprecedented steps of legitimizing attacks on any government on the world that is deemed to be harbouring terrorists. It is also worth mentioning that the term "terrorist" has not been defined which results in certain movements being labeled as terrorists and others as legitimate. Those who are terrorists are the ones that usually follow Islam as a spiritual and political belief such as those in Palestine who wish to remove Israel, or in Chechnya that are fighting against the Russian occupation as being terrorist. Military movements that fight against other regimes such as the SPLA in Sudan or the Iraqi opposition in Iraq are financed by American funds but seem to legitimate in their cause from the viewpoint of the US and the "International community."

The US in now establishing itself in the Indian Sub-continent where it finds the call of Jihad as an obstacle in its quest for global economic and political domination. The manifestation of this call, namely the Taliban, has been obliterated physically but the ideas are still prevalent amongst the masses. To extend its tentacles into this region it needed to do much more than merely obliterate the Taliban. Hence the US and its allies have enlisted the help of Musharaf who will now readily continue the work of Ghulam Ahmed Mirza Qadiyani and attempt to abolish Jihad. Recent legislation and statements made by his secular ministers clearly present the intentions of outlawing jihad in Pakistan. In order to pacify the masses, and not cause a major outcry, this legislation is being brought in piecemeal rather than in a single step. The attack on the Indian Parliament is strange in that none of the Muslim Mujahid groups have claimed responsibility even though it would be a noble thing to do from an Islamic point of view against an enemy. It has given the Indian government the opportunity to call for open attacks against Pakistan and thus has served as a catalyst for the Pakistani government to accuse the Mujahid groups of causing instability. Although the cause of this attack seems rather suspect, the outcome can be easily envisaged. The current Pakistani government, that adheres to the American foreign policy and serves to benefit America only, may well agree to take the US as an arbitrator in the Kashmir issue, even formalising a permanent border. This would then vanquish the need for any "liberation" movements and hence the call for Jihad.

Whatever the next steps, it must be clear to the Muslims in Pakistan that the US is not allied with Pakistan, rather Pakistan is allying itself to the US. The US is allied to India and this was clear with the recent joint military exercises between India and the US. The Indians do not have any other enemies except Pakistan, so it would be naive to think that the US were training them to destroy any other nation, except Pakistan. We call upon the Muslims to solve the problems of Pakistan, India and Kashmir not according to the American plan, but according to Islam. Indeed if there were an attack on Pakistan by India, it is an obligation upon the Muslims to defend their land. It is also an obligation upon Muslims to implement Shariah and this cannot be done unless and until the Islamic ruling system, the Khilafah, is established in Pakistan. We call upon Muslims to engage in this obligation, not because of expedience or benefit, but merely in response to the command of Allah. The problems faced by Pakistan will only worsen without Islam. Only Islam can solve these problems, and if we believe in Islam we should know that because Allah has made Islam perfect for all times and all places:

"This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favour unto you, and have chosen for you as deen, al-Islam" [EMQ 5:3]

"If anyone desires a deen other than Islam never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost" [EMQ 3:85]

i think india are very much trying and want to use sept 11th to legistimise some sort of action against pakistan but have lacked the obvious sophistication of israel to do it properly.

on the subject, can anyone remember off hand the hadith(s) that are narrated about the area of hind and their significance for pakistan/india conflict??
