LONDON (Reuters) - The man suspected of trying to blow up a transatlantic airliner with explosives concealed in his shoes was a British convert to Islam, Britain's Times newspaper said Wednesday.

The suspect, who was carrying a British passport in the name of Richard Reid when he boarded the flight to Miami in Paris on Saturday, worshipped at the Brixton mosque in south London where he was known as Abdel Rahim, the newspaper said.

A spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police declined to discuss the story displayed across the newspaper's front page. No one from the mosque was immediately available for comment.

Reid appeared in court Monday in Boston, where the flight was diverted, after he allegedly tried to ignite explosives in his shoes on the American Airlines Boeing 767.

The Times said Reid worshipped at the mosque with Zacarias Moussaoui, a Frenchman of Moroccan descent who faces conspiracy charges in the United States in connection with the September 11 suicide hijacking attacks on New York and Washington.

The Times said Reid was born in 1973 in Bromley, southeast London, to an English mother and a Jamaican father. It said Reid converted to Islam, grew a beard and began wearing traditional Islamic clothes and military tops.

It said he took Arabic classes at Brixton mosque.

``He was an amiable, happy-go-lucky individual, always wanting to get involved in things and helping,'' the mosque's chairman Abdul Haqq Baker told The Times.

``He was very keen to learn the basics of Islam.''

Mosque leader warns over extremist converts

Staff and agencies
Wednesday December 26, 2001

An Islamic leader from the mosque where the suspected "shoe" bomber worshipped, today warned that other Muslims could have been converted to extreme views.
Abdul Haqq Baker, 35, chairman of the Brixton mosque in south-west London, issued his warning two days after Briton Richard Reid appeared in a Boston court. He was charged with intimidation or assault of a flight crew and detained pending a bail hearing on Friday.

Mr Reid, also known as Abdel Rahim, was wrestled and tied up by flight attendants and fellow passengers on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami after he allegedly tried to touch a lit match to a fuse protruding from one of his shoes.

Mr Baker said: "If they have got the likes of Rahim, there are a lot more and we are very concerned about that."

He added that "Mr Reid knew another worshipper at the mosque, Zacarias Moussaoui, a Frenchman of Moroccan origin who lived in Brixton, and who has been charged in America with conspiracy over the September 11 attacks". He also claimed there was a period at the end of 1998 when the two men attended the Brixton mosque and may have come into contact with each other.

Mr Baker added that when Mr Reid, who is believed to be of Anglo-Jamaican heritage, first arrived at the mosque some time at the end of 1995 and the beginning of 1996, he had recently been converted to Islam while in prison.

He described him Mr Reid as an amiable person who wanted to learn the basics of the religion.

He said: "Having recently converted to Islam he asked to come here to learn more and to assimilate back into society, we wanted to help him with that."

He added: "He was someone out of prison who wanted to learn. There was no indication or suspicion he was linked with terrorist organisations."

Mr Baker said that as his mosque was a community of converts it attracted some "extreme elements" who had tried to convert some of his members and to "grab them using emotional rhetoric".

He added that they worked on "weak characters" and said: "I would say he (Reid) was very, very impressionable."

Speaking about the alleged bomb attack on the plane, Mr Baker said: "I don't think Rahim was capable of planning and orchestrating what was done.

"I definitely believe there are individuals behind him and that he was a test and they were watching to see if he would succeed.

"The gullibility of him is evident in the way he tried to ignite the bomb in his shoe and failed to do that."

Mr Baker said Mr Reid was a member of his mosque for about two years from 1998 and he was found a job by the community working in an incense shop. But then he just disappeared. He said they had heard he was in Pakistan and that during the summer his mother went to the mosque looking for her son.

Speaking about Mr Moussaoui, Mr Baker said: "He made his more radical beliefs known and as a result, in the end, his beliefs were not welcome.

"Abdel Rahim didn't come to propagate his beliefs, he would be asking questions and probing."

He added that Mr Moussaoui increasingly became arrogant and started arguments to such an extent that members didn't want to speak to him: "It was clear to us he was getting teaching from elsewhere," Mr Baker said.

Mr Baker said that after the terrorist attack on September 11 he had given the police the names of individuals the mosque was concerned about and added there had been contact with the authorities on this subject during the past five years.

He said: "We work very closely with notifying the police of our concerns."

He added that following the identification of Mr Reid the authorities were given literature and he met senior officers to give them advice on how to deal with extremists.

But he said his mosque had been threatened in the past by a radical minority.

He said: "Over the years I've had more death threats from extremist elements.

"I'm British born and bred and a Muslim for 12 years since converting. I'm considering relocating my family outside this country."

He explained that he was concerned about foreign nationals who had entered the country under the pretext of seeking political asylum but then went on to preach "rhetoric" against other members of the Muslim community.

Who are the people who help the kaffar against the Muslims?

Please remember our brother Richard Reed in our dua.
whether you agree with a Muslim or disagree with him, we need to remember who are our brothers and who are our enemies.

One of the most important things about being a muslim is that you stand up for justice, even against your own kith and kin.  This was exemplified by the Prophet (SAW) in many cases, notably a case in which he ruled for a Jew against a muslim, even though he was being pressurized to give the verdict to the muslim.  Also remember the famous words of the Prophet (SAW), "By Allah, if Fatima the daughter of Mohammed stole something, I would cut off her hand".

How about people who find every opertunity to side with the kaffar?

It is clear justice here means the distruction of america, because who else has done so much evil and such a short time?
It is a nation built on blood. whose only reason for existing is self benefit. a nation built by exterminating the native inhabitence of a land and building it with slave labour.
And with each and every year they have expanded their opression.
Whose word do we have that the brother has done what they say he has done? and before we call for their evil justice is aplide upon him how about justice on them for all the evil they have commited and are commiting as you read this?
If he is punished for what they say he did, there are a lot more people who they and their friends amoung those who call them selves Muslims regard as heroes who need punishment and need it urgently.

No-one is saying that justice is not due on some of the Americans, but that does not mean we forget our own justice.

Our justice can only be done by our own courts, and by our laws.
the traitors i am refering to are not after justice, they are after distroying Islam and replacing it with another cread that has as little to do with Islam as the creed of Gullam Mirza Ahmed.
Richard read is one man, the traitor has mentioned that he knows of hundreds of "extremist" and has been informing the police of them for the last 5 years. So who are all these people? remember sept 11th was not 5 years ago?
There are very few people who try and stop Muslim women being gang raped in kashmir and who try and stop Muslim women being taken from their villages in burma and sent to "serve" the burmess army and british oil workers, we know these people as the Mujahideen, they know them as the extremist who they report to the police.

If people help the kaffar stop the only people who are stoping them from doing what they are doing. Then it is clear that those people like the idea of Muslim women working in enforced prostitution.
Is it any wonder that the khawarij are the dogs of jahanum?
remember their main charactoristic is harshness towords the believer and gentalness towords the disbeliever.

What are you talking about Brother Jehad??????

Why are they traitors? Do you actually believe that the militant recruiting agents who enlist new supporters at mosques, universities, community centres, jails are teaching new impressionable young men like Richard Reid, about the true peaceful Islam or are they seeking young troubled, vulnerable Muslims to send to terrorist camps and learn about hate? Do they not tell them that their lives are bad because Britain/American authorities don’t want Muslims to succeed? Where do these men get the idea from that to be a good Muslim they have to blow buildings and people up rather then turn up to the mosque and pray? These recruits are lured away from moderate mosques and don’t have a clue about the teachings of tolerance and peace. Because many are new converts to Islam these recruiting agents can exploit their ignorance of Arabic to skew the meaning of the true teachings of Islam. Before you say these recruiters are a figment of my imagination, I’ve been mosques and seen these recruiters, I know they exist! I’ve seen fights break out between the leaders of the mosque and the groups who preach their material.

So Jehad if a ‘traitor’ is a Muslim that wants an end to these militant groups then perhaps I am a traitor too! I don’t want the message of Islam to be skewed and misrepresented. By supporting these groups and letting them continue to preach what they do, means you accept their misrepresentation of Islam. Britain is not becoming a safe place for Muslims and the ‘Muslim Extremist Wannabe Mafia’ is making it a difficult place for Muslims like me to live.

Right now my duas will be for Abulhaqq Baker. He is the chairman of Brixton Mosque where Richard Reid worshipped, and he has received numerous threats against himself  (like cutting off his legs) and family from ‘supposed Muslims’ because he spoke out against the extremist networks operating in his area. Perhaps Jehad you will remember Abulhaqq Baker and his family in your duas.

By the way Jehad do you regard the followers of the Nation of Islam as proper Muslims? The Nation of Islam teaches that Elijah Muhammed, an early Nation of Islam leader, was the last messenger of Allah who appeared just a few decades ago. Or do you think the recruiting agents of Nation of Islam are misinterpreting Islam? If they are don’t you think someone should stand up and say this is not the true Islam or are they traitors if they do so?

Wa’salam
Hania

p.s. If you want Muslims to be proud of you, find a cure for cancer or help fight in Palestine instead of putting dynamite in your shoe and trying to blow up innocent people! Makes me ashamed and sick.

AWW,
Traitors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Against Allah and his prophet.
Who Richard Reid or the imam ? Richard Reid is a strange man, where did he learn to harbour such views as blowing up a plane with innocent people.  ? Please do tell me, is that part of the salaf now ?. Guilty or not, blowing up an innocent plane with C4 is not an option. What do you think would have been acheived, more of our brothers in jail ? More public backslash against the muslims ? More sisters and brothers fearful of going out of their houses ? C'mon if anything shouldn't we show them the way of the prophet, having mercy love and brotherhood ?.

Why is that so hard ? Why can't we look inside our own lives and think of the changes that we oursleves as muslims can do. Rather than always saying 'Death to America and Israel' look at us man, are we really behaving like real muslims ?.

How can people even understand us, if the option we take is to blow up innocents, how can others expect to love us when we don't recognise the oppression and mis-justice that is meeted out to everyone in the world not just the muslims. Lets just stop and think that a person wherever s/he is in the world and if that person is oppressed then we should feel for that person. Lets not say that we are only concerned about the muslims, we should be and are concerned about everyone.

If America is so much of a problem then why can't we make dua that Amererica stops the injustice, by making dua at the dead of the night in tahajjud, by somebody blowing up a plane only further innocents are going to be hurt.

It's gonna be -5c outside in the cold today, there are hundreads of homeless people out there in the streets, how many muslim groups are there that give a free blanket and a warm cup of tea ?. How many muslim groups are there that are active in the neighbour hood area ? So many of the youngsters are on drugs and alcohol abuse, how many muslim drug clinics r there to help these people ?. What about the young and the old do we take care of em ? What about the environement ? What about the volunteer services ?

My point is Islam is not just about the five prayers, its what you do within the five prayers is important. We can't take, take, take all the time, how about giving something back. How about showing from our actions that we are an active force, rather than having knee jerk reactions. Why can't we win the hearts of the people and then give them the deen ?.
It always seems that we are reactive rather than proactive.

May Allah forgive me and eveyone else.

Salaams

hania while you remember abdul Huk Baker in your dua, you please reserve a mention for the  countless women who are currently being gang raped in prisons all over the world due to peaple like abdul Huk baker reporting the names of their brothers and fathers to the forces of the kaffar.
Please remember to ask Allah that a potential husband wont hold the fact that the girl has lost her virginity to countless suadi, Israeli, Indian soldiers against her. Please also pray for the kids who are born out of such methods of spreading tolerent Islam.

The believers are one body so are the disbelievers.
I know brixton Musjid very well, they spread their "tolerent brand of Islam by braking the legs of people who critasize Fahd.
Now would you say the "muslims" who report Hamas and Jihad supports to the jews are working for tolerent Islam?
Would you say the Jews are helping the cause of tolerent Islam By gang raping the female relatives of people they accuse of intolerent Islam?

Dont be galable, much evil is being done to the Muslims. A small amount of People are standing up to it. They are the people who are being reported to the police. non of the "tolerent voices" were in Bosnia, in chechnia in kashmir, it was the "exstreamist brainwashers", so if you have a problem with  the "extremist brainwashers" lead by example and fight America in a way you consider lawful. because if you report Muslims to the Kaffar, u have picked whose side you are on. and Inshallah all the "muslims" who help the disbeliever against Muslims will share the same afterlife as the people they help.
Remember Jihad will always be a part of Islam and no one can change this fact.
And by the way, the mujahid are the most tolerent people I know.
The abdul Huks gang don't even tolerate people keeping their hands and feet in a different way to them duing prayer without labling them deviants.
Every one is tolerent and intolerent. It is only who you are tolerent/intolerent to.
Many people are very tolerent with Homosexuals, semi naked women and Kaffar who are fighting us, but very intolerent with Muslims who they may have differences with.
While others are very tolerent with believers and very intolerent with Kaffars who are trying to exterminate us.
WHo do you think fit the bill of the khawarig?

assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

I've known Abdul-Haq Baker for nearly a decade, and i've been to Brixton masjid on numerous occasions too, and I know many brothers who attend the masjid.

To say that NJ's statements regarding Abdul-Haq & this masjid are exaggerated, if not outright lies is an understatement.

Best that someone calls him and asks him about what he said.
