Kathy...i thought Mystic is more like "sublime" or "Mysterious"???...so i always associated it with the Spiritual realm...

With Maliha, I alwayz thought it meant "beautiful" but today I looked it up and another place said "Praising", and I was like :o:o:o I didn't know that!!!!! That goes perrrrfffectly with a good pen name....
so i guess i'll keep it :)
unless another good suggestion comes along....i'll skip cinnamons, thanks anon:)

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh my sisters and brothers

What I will write probably has little to do with the topic above. So, Sr Maliha, I apologize in case the thread goes in different direction. I am also in the same situation as you are.

Trying to find a pen name is a simple issue yet difficult as the name we choose will potray ourself.  Of course as Muslim we would like to potray good adab even in choosing the names for our children  and in this case a pen name representing who we are. Let say I pick A.J (In some part of my life I've been called this as it is my initial. It started when I was in boarding school and there were a number of girls sharing the same first name as I am. So I picked out my initial instead). Now, ppl tend to make assumption . These are some of the remarks I got during my "A.J era"
1. I thought A.J was a guy
2. You like BSB, huh? (A.J is a member of Backstreey Boys who is the wierdest of all)
3. I thought you were a non muslim?
4. It's 'tough' name. If people keep calling you that, and the mindset you will have along with the name, it might just be a du'a for you. Do you actually believe yourself to be this A.J persona?

The last remark actually came from me . LOL. Yup, I talk to myself a lot too. You can see that I have a personality crisis growing up ;). Now I revert back to people calling me by real first name. Kak Barr, Sr Kathy & Mary keep it to yourself!!!! Only you guys know what A.J really stands for! I am also is paranoid over being anonymous when being online.

I have been contemplating with either using my real name or a pen name for the books/stories/multimedia/website that I've done. But, if I were the parent, buying books for my children, I'd want to find out more abt the author who writes the book, her credential/experience and especially the name as it will feed my preassumption need of whether the person writing is a Muslim or not (this is a weak reason though). Addition to that, what do I have to hide abt myself if I am ikhlas(sincere) in what I do. I have no intention of deceiving anyone nor having hidden agenda with the ability to write that Allah S.W.T has bestowed upon me. It is the greatest gift, yet I accept it  also as a test.

These are reasons why I did not want to use my real name..
1. I am paranoid abt being anonymous. Be it online, or in this world. I am scared that if I were to become the object of stalkers. Hehehhehee... I know, you'll prolly say "You ain't famous!" . Not just stalkers, but sihir(magic) . Don't misunderstood me and don't take my reasons to dampen your enthusiasim  in contributing to the Ummah., but I'm speaking of my own experience. I've seen people with bad intention using this kind of method to destroy other people's live out of jealousy. So, my solution is to keep a really low profile. The least people that know exactly what I do, the better. Also, it'll prolly shock my family (and friends) since I've always been considered the "rebel, black sheep, wierd, abnormal"  by them.So having that kind of reputation, I ask myself whether they will actually believe what I wrote (telling the kids to have a proper akhlak etc) when one of the real reason I wrote is for them. I mean can you imgaine picking up a book on "History of Islam" written by Jackie Collins???!! That was just an example, and no I don't have her kind of lifestyle!!! But, Allah knows best and we plan, but He is the Best Planner.

2. Riyaa (hypocrisy or arrogance) . This worry me a lot. In fact it has been my fear to do many things.
I've been thinking abt registering to this board and stop being anonymous because I felt that whenever I read whatever ppl post, I'd like to know a little bit of who the person is. It's more comfortable reading from someone we know then a stranger even if what is written is what matters. So I registered. Now, I found myself sometimes deleting my replies because I ask myself 2 questions : " Do you have the valid proof to support your statement and are you trully doing this for Allah or merely for praise. That somehow to the rest of the world, you are caring and sensitive to the plight of you sisters and brothers?".
Below is excerpt from Glimpses from the book "Riyaa: Hidden Shirk" Abu Ammar Yasir al-Qathi  Edited by Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips © 1997 Dar al-Fatah

The love of Praise---as mentioned in a hadeeth of the first three people being thrown into the hellfire; the scholar (who taught for fame), the martyr (who faught for fame), and the person who gave his money in charity (so people would say he is generous). All three of these people desired the pleasure of people over the pleasure of Allah. The person who desires the praise of people must feel some pride in himself, for he feels himself worthy of being praised. There is a danger, therefore, of him becoming arrogant and boastful.
Aboo Hurayrah quoted Allah's Messenger (saaw) as saying: "Allaah, Most Great and Glorious said: Pride is My cloak, and greatness is My robe, so whoever competes with Me, with respect to either of them, I shall cast him into Hell" (Saheeh Muslim, vol. 4 #6349, Sunan Aboo Dawood, vol. 3 #4079)
Aboo Hurayrah quoted Allah's Messenger (saaw) warning about a person's adoration of himself: "There are three destructful things: desires that are followed, greediness that is obeyed, and a person's self-admiration and conceit; and this is the worst of the three"
Allah also warned against falling into the category of those Christians and Jews whom the Qur`an mentions:
"Do not assume that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done, think not that they are absolved from punishment, (but rather) for them is a painful torment." (Al-Imran : 188)

InsyaAllah, I put all my dependency to Allah regarding this matter. That I will be protected from the whisper of Shaitan and that the seed of ikhlaas(Sincerity) will grow inside me and rooted firmly.  As a Muslim, we are to strive for the best, perfection. Allahu Alam (Allah knows best)

Only Allah knows best, and to Him we should seek answers and protection. May Allah forgives me if I've mentioned anything that will only cause fitna or displeasure among the Ummah . I am sorry if I don't make any sense.

Wassalam

No need to apologize, i think you raise some important issues...i like the idea of a "pen name" for all the reasons you mentioned above, and also like you said, having people focus on the MESSAGE and IDEAS and not the person behind it...so people won't miss the point.

Yet feelings of self conceit can even seep in regardless of the label one may place on themselves...So people may not know who the real "Mystic" (or whatever name i pick) is, but I know...so i think that part will just be a personal jihad and having to remind myself of my intention each time i sit down to do anything...Wa Allahu A'alam...

So in conclusion...i am confused too:(

BTW, I am also the "weird" one in my family, but they are used to me by now;-D

:-) Maliha :-)
