Palestinian religious figures warn against Israeli sovereignty over Al-Aqsa

Text of report by Muhammad Abu-Khudayr and Muhammad Al-Nubani in Jerusalem, published by Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds web site on 27 December; subheadings as published:

The Higher Islamic Authority, the Muslim ulema [religious scholars] and the Muslim shari'ah judges in Palestine have categorically rejected the demands being made by some rabbis in Israel on the government of Ariel Sharon. The rabbis are demanding the imposition of Israeli sovereignty on the courtyards of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and to prevent Muslims from entering it. They considered such demands as a provocation to the feelings of all Muslims throughout the globe and as an insult to their faith. They stressed that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and all its courtyards, vestibules, hallways, domes, gates, foundations, walls and open spaces belong to the Muslims alone and that the Jews have absolutely no right to them.

Shaykh Muhammad Husayn, the head of the Islamic council, has stressed that the Higher Islamic Authority and the Al-Awqaf [Muslim Endowments] Department strongly denounce and reject the convocation of the conference of rabbis in holy Jerusalem and the radical calls that it may make. He asserted that there may be concord between what the rabbis are proposing and what the government headed by Ariel Sharon believes in.

The conference of rabbis is a development towards violence

The Higher Islamic Authority, the Muslim ulema, and the shari'ah judges in Palestine have issued a statement in which they said: "The claims being made by the rulers of Israel and its rabbis about the alleged temple are pure fabrications without any base or foundation. They are intended to make political gains and arouse the religious of Muslims. Such claims represent a serious escalation of the tense situation that will lead to undesirable consequences." The statement asserted that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is the fulcrum of the miracle of Al-Isra and Al-Mi'raj [Prophet Muhammad's nocturnal journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension to heaven] and part of the belief of 1.5 billion Muslims in Divine Judgment. The statement pointed out that any tampering with the Al-Aqsa Mosque or any aggression on it constitutes an aggression on Islam that no one would accept.

Implementation of the resolutions of Arab and Islamic summits

The ulema emphasized that peace or security or stability cannot be attained in the region or the whole world unless all the resolutions of the Arab and Islamic summits are applied. These resolutions call for Israel's total withdrawal from all the occupied lands, including holy Jerusalem, and for the imposition of full Palestinian sovereignty on holy Jerusalem and on all the Muslim holy places, including the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. The statement appealed to the Arab and Muslim nations to do their duty in defending the Al-Aqsa Mosque and in supporting the Palestinian people materially, morally and politically in the battle for the defence of Islam, the Muslim holy places and the dignity of the Arab nation. The statement appealed to the international community to stand firmly alongside the inalienable Palestinian right to Jerusalem and its holy places and to prevent Sharon's government from perpetrating arbitrary measures against the sons of the Palestinian people and their holy places in order to safeguard international peace and security.

A call for unity of ranks and opinions

The statement called on all the sons of the Palestinian people to unify their opinions, close ranks, and head for the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque to defend and protect it.

The demands of the rabbis

The Jewish rabbis, who are holding their annual conference for days near the Al-Buraq Wall (The Wailing Wall), have asked Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to apply Israeli sovereignty on the courtyards of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. They are also demanding a stop to the renovations that the Al-Awqaf Department is undertaking under the claim that these renovations destroy so-called Jewish religious ruins and the remains of the alleged Solomon's Temple. The Jewish rabbis also objected to the prevention of Jews from entering the courtyards of Al-Aqsa. They called for the same treatment to Muslims, in other words, to prevent them from entering the mosque.

Shaykh Husayn stressed that the Muslims would never allow anyone to harm their beliefs and faith represented in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He said that such calls do not lead to peace or to respect of the beliefs of others. They also reflect a development in the Israeli discourse towards more extremism and to actual tampering with the blessed mosque and the feelings of Muslims.

The siege of Al-Aqsa continues

The imam and director of the mosque has said that there is an ideological siege of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in addition to preventing the worshippers from arriving there. He added that for more than 18 months, the occupation authorities have been blocking the arrival of renovation materials from reaching the Al-Haram al-Sharif [Muslim sanctuary in Jerusalem that encloses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock]. He added: "The renovation of the open spaces, vestibules and buildings of the Al-Haram al-Sharif is a Muslim right and that the Muslim Al-Awqaf Department represents all the Muslims of the world. No non-Muslim party has the right to intervene in the affairs of Muslims and the Al-Aqsa Mosque."
