Question :) Questions :) and more Questions part 2

Ok you all most likely know me by now I'm the lady with all the questions.

1) Dogs? I read on one of the boards here about someone worried about cleaning a new place to live as prior renters had animals.

So what is this all about? Is it against beliefs to have dogs or cats in the home and why?  Is it possible back when anything was written it was because they had no indoor plumbing and maybe house breaking a dog back then wasn't know thus being really really unsanitary?

1b) I have friends who are maybe coming from Saudi to visit, will this bother them if I have a dog in the house? I am clean and the dog goes to the groomers for a bath weekly.

I don't mean to sound funny but especially when my hubby is gone it is comforting to have a 200 lb dog sleeping on the floor beside my bed at night with a  "you bother my mistress I will eat you" attitude :O  (Its an English Mastiff)

2) Once a woman becomes a Muslim as long as she dresses modestly but doesn't cover her hair/head is this strictly forbidden (like a sin) or is it just strongly recommended?

3) and please I am not trying to be rude here in anyway. I promise I am not trying to be rude or a smart alic.
Can someone please tell me or explain about the things I hear about the prophet having a 9 y/o wife?  (9 yrs old or there about)
I keep hearing about this.

4) Is it true if you don't make it to Jannah you can go there later after you serve your punishment?

5) This problem between Muslims and the Jews, Is this only about the jewish/palistinian issue or is there more to it? Has it been something over the centuries or just in the last decades? (and please I request no harsh words toward anyones replies I am only looking to learn and understand not start discontent.)

I have a few more but I just remembered I forgot to feed the horses tonight and it is past 8 p.m. here so if anyone answers theses please look back for more as I will modify this later and add more
Thank You

Just trying to help.  I will keep it civil.

1)Volume 4, Book 54, Number 448:
Narrated Abu Talha:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."

If you ask me I would rather have an Angel look over me rather than a dog any night or day!!

It may offend them, it may not.

2)033.059
YUSUFALI: O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

and

024.031
YUSUFALI: And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.

These are the two ayat from the Quran that have the directive to where the hijab (as the 'covering' is translated in Arabic).

From what I know it is a command or obligation to cover your head or hair, and not merely a suggestion or recommendation.

The Prophet (sAas) explained to Asma bint Abu Bakr (rAa) that the phrase "what is apparent of it" refers to the face and hands. This is narrated by Aisha Umm al-Muminin (rAa), Qatada (rAa), and Asma bint Umais (rAa). This has been confirmed as the explanation of the phrase by the following scholars:

Sahaba: Aisha Umm al-Muminin (rAa), ibn Abbas (rAa), Anas ibn Malik (rAa), and Miswar ibn Makhrama (rAa)

Tabi'un: Ata (rAa), Qatada (rAa), Sa'id ibn Jubayr (rAa), Mujahid (rAa), al-Hasan (rAa), and al-Dahhak (rAa)

Commentators on the Quran: Imam Tabari, Imam Zamakhshari, Imam Razi, and Imam Qurtubi
(from web site by Al-Muhajabah)

3) I will only say this: what is the norm for this society ou're branded a heretic and innovator. it doesn't matter if it's going to save their kids from the hellfire even, people are just blind sometimes and lack any type of vision.

i'd just have to tell people that are trying to do things for islam to continue their work regardless of criticism and that if they know that it is right, history will one day show they were right and of course they will be rewarded for their work.

easy words to say, i know, to people who are still human beings. with all the criticism from people anyone can get discouraged and angry and just abandon projects where it's just an uphill battle. our enemy always seems to be our own selves.

A R C H I V E S

Individual posts do not necessarily r; and every person, whether a hypocrite or a believer, would be endowed with a light, and there would be spikes and hooks on the bridge of the Hell, which would catch hold of those whom Allah willed. Then the light of the hypocrites would be extinguished, and the believers would secure salvation. and the first group to achieve it would comprise seventy thousand men who would have the brightness of full moon on their faces, and they would not be called to account. Then the people immediately following them would have their faces as the brightest stars in the heaven. This is how (the groups would follow one after another). Then the stage of intercession would come, and they (who are permitted to intercede) would intercede, till he who had declared:" There is no god but Allah" and had in his heart virtue of the weight of a barley grain would come out of the Fire. They would be then brought in the courtyard of Paradise and the inhabitants of Paradise would begin to sprinkle water over them till they would sprout like the sprouting of a thing in flood water, and their burns would disappear. They would ask their Lord till they would be granted (the bounties) of the world and with it ten more besides it

5)  The crux of the issue is the presence of any other deen on the Arab peninsula and its impermissability.  There are also several quotes in the Quran that testify to the animosity that SOME Jews have for al-Islam.  Here are some ahadith and quotes:

Volume 4, Book 53, Number 392:
Narrated Abu Huraira:

While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, "Let us go to the Jews" We went out till we reached Bait-ul-Midras. He said to them, "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. So, if anyone amongst you owns some property, he is permitted to sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle."

Book 041, Number 6981:
Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: You will fight against the Jews and you will kill them until even a stone would say: Come here, Muslim, there is a Jew (hiding himself behind me) ; kill him.

Book 45, Number 45.5.17:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ismail ibn Abi Hakim that he heard Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz say, "One of the last things that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said was, 'May Allah fight the jews and the christians. They took the graves of their Prophets as places of prostration . Two deens shall not co-exist in the land of the Arabs.' "

Perhaps these may help you see why the issue between Muslims and Jews.  I do not claim to know all of the ramifications or criteria for these ahadith but they seem rather clear in regards to the age of the tensions and where they originate.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

QAK

To QAK
Thank you

If you ask me I would rather have an Angel look over me rather than a dog any night or day!!
*******************************************************************
I not only stand corrected but I totally agree.

******************************************************************* 3) I will only say this: what is the norm for this society and age is not necessarily the moral standard for all ages nor the median.  I would have to recommend an article called Prophet Muhammad and Aisha Siddiqa®? by Sabeel Ahmed.  His credentials seem in good form and it is a very enlightening article.
*******************************************************************
It's funny you should say this as I almost put something like this in my post in the form of a question. I agree what was acceptable what??? 1400 yrs ago is different than today.

Thank you for your answers. What do you suggest I do to prepare my home for my Saudi guests other than putting the dog in a kennel during their visit? I can honestly say the dog has NEVER been in the guest room nor the bathroom. But is there something other than regular cleaning I should do out of respect for them?

I have a bird, does this apply to birds?
Again Thank You

Oh and pics of living things? Is it against Islamis rules to have pictures of your relatives? That seems to be s common thing amoung many countries. What about knick knacks (figurines) of animals. I have so much to learn.

AWW,

Too briefly put it
Dogs can only be kept really when there is a high need for protection, for example, a guard dog to look over the flock of sheep or say for example, the police services have a sniffer dog to help them to search for people, for example, when there is an earthquake or at the airport to search people fo drugs and bombs. The saliva of the dogs is not clean as it is impure.
Now the question is raised that sometimes that these dogs serve dual purposes, they serve as a protection to the business and are kept in the house as well. A good example, is a farm house dog. So where would you draw the line ? I think it might be an idea to keep the dog in a shed/kennel or keep it outside, that way its not in the house.

Another problem is that many people are afriad of dogs so it puts them at a slight difficulty when they see a 200lb dog sitting at the foot of the door !. Believe me, in our place people cross the roads just so that the dog's don't bother em.!!. Will your guests be afraid of dogs ?
As for me  I love dogs, if I could keep em I would keep a WolfHound. ;)

Cats can be kept. As for birds what type of bird is it ? Budgy ? or a a falcon ?

Yes a budgie :) A falcon ohhh I wish.  And I do have a cat too but I would think that would be even less sanitary. Cats jump up on counter tops. Because of this I put him in a crate if I am not home as I cannot supervise him.
He's not exactly fond of the flying lessons when he misbehaves ;-D
So I just don't let him get into any trouble to begin with.

Wolfhounds are cool. But I like my English Mastiffs and Great Danes and I do believe in angels watching out for us, I kind of like to think of him as the angels helper, not that they need any help (just joking, no disrespect meant.  I use to have a border collie so I guess that would be considered a working dog/sheep dog. But he drove me nuts.

I actually do consider my mastiff for protection. I have the gun for the coyote's and the mastiff for people. and to be honest companionship as my sons are grown and gone and hubby goes away. On the road alone doing business, no one comes near the car :) I do travel and drive a lot at times with my business. I have two grown sons (I know if you're in the UK you won't understand this as I have friends there and the gun thing surprises them) that are very protective of me. The oldest use to constantly nagged me about getting my conceled weapons permit as I travel alone and and use to over the mountain even at night quite frequently. The insurance agent told me the most claims she filled that week (when I asked her) were on stollen handguns out of cars. (Which I think is stupid as you are suppose to carry them with you when you get out of the car) Anyway I prefer the dog on the road to a gun.

As for folks crossing the road hehe that was funny. I live out in the country on acreage. If anyone is out here without a reason or just walking by then the dog deters them from trying anything wrong.

As for my guests, I would of course do anything that would make them most comfortable. Even sending the "little" guy (poochy) to a kennel.

The reason I asked about, is there any special cleaning I should do is cause I thought I saw a thread on one of the boards about a sister moving in a place where a dog was kept prior and something about being able to pray where a dog was kept???

Bismillah and salam,

Brother Haniff don't tease, birds cats etc is ok :)

1.I just wanted to say that another reason we don't keep the dogs because they may breake our wudu, abolution. The only thing that does from them break our wudu is the saliva. The prophet saws said that to clean it with sand. A European scientist found 50 or more germs in teh saliva of the dog but nothing at all was able to kill all, not the strongest of bleach or detergents or whatever. The only thing that did get rid of it was the sand. subhan Allah. I heard this in sheikh Omar Abdul Kafi tape cassette, insha'Allah next time i listen again i will get the name of the Euro-scientist.

Tasnim why not keep it outside as protection dog? and teach him not to lick :)

2. The hijab is obligatory on women, but you know Cara it is a process, people strengthen their faith first and slowly get used to wearing it. You first wear more modest longer, some days cover the hair with a scarf that doesn't look like hijab slowly you feel more confident when it gets to the point that you feel the importance of it to help you grow spritualy in that sense as well then make the committment.

3. About the wives of the prophet saws He did marry many for different reasons. Some are legisilative ot help us understand what is allowed and what is not LIke marrying divorces and widowers is ok. Some reasons were social to strengthen islamic bonds between tribes that used to fight before islam and now they are brothers and sisters and this is to insure that the ill feelings are gone on another level. ANother reason was political, to gain a truce/protection with certain tribes. Or Allah, as in the case of Aisha, has chosen her for him. He saw her in the dream before she was even born.

I think many kafir people accuse the prophet saws of being a womenizer, astaghfirullah, but if you look at how he married these women you will see that for most of his life he did not marry or be with more than one women who is khadija even after her death he did not remarry. That is one point. Then when he did get the messgae and revelations, if he was abusing it for his own desires he would have picked the best looking, virgins, etc and NONE, except for Aisha was like that and she was the only one that Allah has chosen for him.

REmember at the time it was actually men were marrying more than the 4 which islam allows. And remember also that islam has put a very difficult condition on it to be permissable.  There are many good articles really. i will try to find them and put them up in this thread if I can insha'Allah.

4. Yes it is. The only sin that is not forgiven for muslims is to not believe in teh monotheism of Allah.

Abu Dhar radiyallahu anhu says, “Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam said, “I know that person well who will enter Jannah first and also that person who will be the last one to be taken out of Jahannam. On the Day of Qiyaamah a person will be brought forward to the court of Almighty Allah. It shall be commanded that all the minor sins of that person be put forward to him and the major sisn be concealed. When the minor sins are disclosed to that person, he will accept that he had committed them, as there will be no room for refuting them. (He will begin to tremble and say in his heart that these are only the minor sins, what will happen when the major sins are exposed.) During this happening it shall be commanded that for every sin of that person he be given the ajr (thawaab-reward) of a good deed. Upon hearing this person himself will say I still have many sins left to account for, that are not seen here.”
Abu Dhar radiyallahu anhu says, “Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam while narrating the words of that person began laughing until his mubarak teeth began to show.” (The reason being that the person himself disclosed the very sins he was frightened of.)

You post good questions Cara:)  Sometimes it's hard learning about Islam on the internet because one website says one thing, then the next says something else.  You have to check who wrote the information that you're reading.  I have lots of questions too which I'll post soon;)

Hi caraj,
The reason I asked about, is there any special cleaning I should do
Well as far as I know, there is cleaning required since the saliva of the dog is not clean. Do you still clean the areas where butch(your dog) has gone, I would think so. It was like when we bought our house, the previous owner gave us the option of having the carpets with the deal, however we but we said no, as it would have meant to much to clean since the owner had a dog. Now to your advantage is when your guests come there is already one room where butch hasn't gone that can serve as the prayer room and rest area for them for the short term. It's just that when they say their prayers you'd want yourself and your guest to feel comfortable when praying and the last thing you want is any unease for them.

And for hygeine you can perhaps also start to clean the other places as well where butch has left his saliva. And once you accept Islam, which hopefully is not day too far, then it would be more easy for yourself as you're preparing for one of the many positive changes in your life.
know if you're in the UK you won't understand this as I have friends there and the gun thing surprises them
Not really, I'm all for it. I understand why people keep em in the States. It's a shame that they have been outlawed in the UK, due to some high profile incidents and rusing legislation. Now we can only keep guns without a firearms certifcate that are under 12Ftps, otherwise its a licence.
So what should I do with my dog?
Take each day as it comes, dogs after all are a creation of Allah, and to treat it harshly or say for example, you disregard it completly and it feels hurt in some sense would not be the best of options. I would say start to slowly leave it outside, get a kennel and still continue feeding it. And insha-allah one day it'll adjust to the outdoor life.
I have lots of questions too which I'll post soon
We look forward to your questions Julie.

Salaams

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,
3) and please I am not trying to be rude here in anyway. I promise I am not trying to be rude or a smart alic.
Can someone please tell me or explain about the things I hear about the prophet having a 9 y/o wife?  (9 yrs old or there about)
I keep hearing about this.
Two more good articles on this issue are:

[*] Prophet Muhammad and Aisha?
[*] The Young Marriage of Aisha

I remember hearing a very good lecture about the concept of adolescence, or teenagerhood, and how the whole notion of an age in between childhood and adulthood is something that was constructed fairly recently in the west.  (At its roots is the desire to keep a large amount of the population out of the work force, and what is used to occupy their time during this age is a system of education that lasts until they're eighteen.)  In most 'traditional' cultures though, there was/is no such interjacent period.  From the time of puberty onwards, you are considered an adult, and you carry the same responsibilities and obligations an adult would.  From the time of physical maturity, you are considered intellectually competent to hold a government position, to educate others, to have a say in the political decisions of a society, to work to provide for your family, to be put on trial in a court of law, etc etc, as well as to marry.  This was the case not just in eastern cultures but in the west until fairly recently.  Even into the early twentieth century adolescents were farmers, apprentices, teachers, soldiers, wives and husbands even here in the United States.

So, as others have said, I think it's definitely important to understand the actions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in terms of the context of his society and it's social understanding of age.

And an an aside, in Islam, the age of takleef, or accountability, or when you are considered an adult who is responsible for his/her own actions, *is* the age of puberty, as opposed to the age of 18 or 21 that we're accustomed to here in the United States.
5) This problem between Muslims and the Jews, Is this only about the jewish/palistinian issue or is there more to it? Has it been something over the centuries or just in the last decades? (and please I request no harsh words toward anyones replies I am only looking to learn and understand not start discontent.)
If you're interested, a concise overview of Islamic history I would recommend is Karen Armstrong's Islam: A Short History.

I wanna quote something from the book that I think addresses this question really well:

The Quran continued to revere Jewish prophets and to urge Muslims to revere the people of the book (even after conflict with Jewish tribes).  Smaller Jewish groups continued to live in Medina, and later Jews, like Christians, enjoyed full religious liberty in the Islamic empires.

Anti-semetism is a Christian vice.  Hatred of the Jews became marked in the Muslim world only after the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 and the subsequent loss of Arab Palestine.  It is significant that Muslims were compelled to import anti-Jewish myths from Europe, and translate into Arabic such virulently anti-semetic texts as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, because they had no such traditions of their own.  (p. 22)

Oh and pics of living things? Is it against Islamis rules to have pictures of your relatives? That seems to be s common thing amoung many countries. What about knick knacks (figurines) of animals. I have so much to learn.
We discussed this a bit before here.

wasalaam :)

ps - the lecture I mentioned was (I think) "Islam in America: Bridging the Gap" by Hamza Yusuf.

pps - don't call me bookish.

ppps - Julie looking forward to your questions :)

Salam,

I would very much recommend a book by Sh Yusuf al Qaradawi, one of the most respected Islamic scholars of our time, "The Lawful and Prohibited in Islam...this book would answer most of your questions (he dicusses Womens dress, Dogs and Images/photographs among many other things). It can be found on this online library here (Click on "books" and then scroll down and look under the sub heading of "Law and Jurisprudence":

http://www.witness-pioneer.org/vil/Default.htm

Concerning some Muslim attiudes towards Jews and vice versa this is very much a modern phenomenon. Before Zionism, Muslim and Jews got along just fine for the most part. I am taking this year a course on the history of the Mediterranean..main focus of the course is Muslim, Christian & Jewish relationship. In our study we found that the Jews for the most part were better off under Muslim rule than under Christain rule. There are many reasons for this.. many of them have to do with economics and political pragmatism. But the main reason why Jews and Xtns enjoyed a better status under Muslim rule than Jewish and Muslim minorites under Xtn rule is bc protection for Jews and Christains are Divinely sanctioned in the Quran..The Quran protects the the people of the Book (xtns and jews). While the Jews (and Muslim minorities living under xtn rule) had no such protection under Christians.
While in xtn land Jews were resented ( mainly for the following reasons:
-bc xtns believed that they were responsible for the crusifixion of Jesus (pbuh) and
- bc the Jews were usually limited to the money lending role..which brought upon them greater resentment bc many xtns found that they were dependant on Jews for money)

..in Islamic lands Jews enjoyed greater freedom..they were not limited to certain roles. You find that many Jews were personal physicians of caliphs and sultans and court scribes..and you also find them in many other powerful and respectable positions.

I can go on and on with this topic and give examples and go in much greater detail but I'll stop here bc I am a slow typer (and thinker :p) and bc it is late..^_^

About Aisha (ra)..I read the articles that se7en posted and they address the question well Alhumdillah..I just thought I would throw this in this..might seem irrelevant to some..I had friend who got her period at 9.. she was extremely mature for her age (physically and character wise)..many ppl thought she was many years older than what she was..(Some ppl thought she was my mom!! and she's only a couple yrs older than me)

I also knew a girl who got her period at the age of 8..

Sorry to ask a  question in your thread Cara,
I have photos framed of my kids when they were baby in their room and
also on my fridge in the kitchen, is this also wrong ? I don?t pray to
them and also  don?t give these snaps any specials status (good omen etc
etc) but they are there for no reason but to see how my kids were when
they were baby- I like to look at them  .
Is  this is  wrong ? Isn?t everything based on ne?aya(intention) ?
Jazak allahkhairun
