What God wants?

Hi all,

the new board looks great!    :-*

My question:  how can we know what God wants from each one of us in each individual moment?  Is it strictly what is contained in the Qur'an?    I often here people  talking about what God wants.  That always seems a bit presumptuous to me.  How can we really know?

peace, Sparrow

Hi Sparrow,
you're absolutely right, we can't presume to know all the time what God wants in every situtation.
What we do know, is that certain rules or traditions were revealed to the prophet Muhammad  [saw], and were recorded in either the Qur'an, as the word of God, or in the Hadith, which are the recorded sayings and deeds of Muhammad.  [saw]

From these sources, we try to find out what is the right thing to do in each situation. If there is a matter which is unclear from either of these sources, then generally the decisions of scholars of Islam are sought and followed.
Nobody unlearned in Islam has the right to make a decision without the proper proofs for his decision.

I hope you understood some of this. If not, I'll try to be a bit clearer, Insha Allah.

asalaamu alaikum,

wow i guess you have to really think about this one- how can we know?

We have been blessed by God with intellect- the ability to think, reason and judge..so I guess in this situation where we haven't got the answer clearly spelled out in front of us, we need to use what we have been given in order to come to the answer.

So what has God given us?

His divine lecture-the Quraan

guidance via his messengers (peace upon them all)

our intellect

ability to communicate with Him- prayer
So reading God's revelation, learning about how His messengers handled different situations, and using our judgement should be able to get us the answer we seek.  If that fails, we have the life-line of prayer, where we can ask for an answer.

I'm not implying that what I've written is absolutely right, these are just my thoughts, but I hope this helps answer your question :)

and peace always.
Ahmed ;-)
