From BBC news

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has convened an all-party meeting ahead of a right-wing Hindu group's planned construction of a temple on the ruins of a mosque in the northern town of Ayodhya.
The issue led to heated confrontations between the government and opposition MPs in the Indian parliament on Tuesday.

Hundreds of militant Hindus have gathered in the town where the group, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council), plans to build the temple on the site of the 16th century Babri mosque.

On Monday, Indian President KR Narayanan warned that the authorities would stop them.

The mosque was torn down by Hindu militants nine years ago, sparking nationwide violence between Hindus and Muslims in which more than 2,000 people were killed.

Pressure on the government is mounting

On Monday, hundreds of VHP volunteers began arriving by trains and buses from different parts of India.

Chanting slogans the volunteers attended special prayers at the VHP's headquarters near the disputed site.

Nearby, dozens of artisans are engaged in chiselling red sandstone pillars, arches and images of Hindu deities for the planned temple.

A legal dispute between Hindus and Muslims over the ownership of the land has continued for several years.

Fraternal disputes

The VHP is an important ally of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the past, the BJP provided political support for the VHP's controversial temple-building plans and its campaign for turning India into a Hindu state.

But the constraints of national politics have forced the BJP to distance itself from the VHP's campaign.

Passions are running high over the Ayodhya issue

Mr Vajpayee has advised the VHP to wait for the court's verdict before taking further steps.

Defying Mr Vajpayee, a senior VHP leader, Acharya Giriraj Kishor, announced on Monday that moving building material to the disputed site would begin at 1415 local time (0845 GMT) on 15 March.

But in a speech to the opening session of the parliament on Monday, President Narayanan said the government was duty-bound to maintain the status quo at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

The president also said that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the preservation of law and order.

47 muslims already killed in Bharuch, 57 hindus die.

Last time they had these riots 2500 people died. May Allah protect our brothers and sisters and may he give hidayat to the others.
