[slm] Pakistani government demolishes twelve mosques in capital 2002-02-25 17:41:44 Baluchistan Post 25 February 2002 Some 12 mosques were demolished in different sectors of the federal capital on Wednesday. The operation was jointly carried out by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration, District Awqaf Department (DAD) and capital police. Official sources said that the mosques were razed as part of the military government’s ongoing drive against religious parties, mosques and Madaris in the country. The demolitions excited a lot of public resentment but no resistance was reported, official sources said. The sources said some of the committees obtained stay orders from local courts against the government action. "However, they have failed to produce before the courts any solid proof and document confirming the legality of these mosques and Madaris. The drive will continue and more mosques and Madaris will be demolished in near future." A DAD official said the ICT had set a criteria for prayer leaders under which the Imam should have the qualification of Dars-i-Nizami, a degree approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) equivalent to a master’s degree in Islamic Studies and Arabic. "Dars-i-Nizami is a nine-year course which is compulsory for the Imam of every mosque," he said. Similarly, all mu’azzins of mosques should be Hafiz-i-Quran so that in case of the absence of Imam, they can lead the prayer, the official said. [wlm] |

[slm] BRO MUJAHID, I do not think that the pakistanis prefer or advocate their goverment to carry out these horrendous acts ........but the public is too weak to rise to the goverment in power. Over the years Pakistan has gone through more change of goverments and more martial laws than probably any other country in the subcontinent. However the present goverment and their cronies are way ahead of their predecessors. BUSHRA :-) |
