North American Culture

Salams folks,

This is my first submission to this message board.  Some may know me through isnet (khuram - from winnipeg) or Mirq (KZAA, ScroadS).  i've been busy the past few years, and have finally decided to break out of my shell.  Regardless, i came across a great article on the net (islam.ca) by Dr. Tariq Ramadan, called Towards a Muslim Presence in North America, and i highly suggest everyone read it.
In it, Dr. Ramadan points out that 'Active citizenship has to be encouraged and a North American Islamic culture needs to be created. How? By respecting Islamic principles while adopting North American tastes and styles'.
I strongly agree with Dr. Ramadan. For example, when it comes to dress, certain individuals will say that the islamic dress is the 'galabiya' or 'Jalbab'.  So let us agree with that (even though the true islamic dress is lose fitting clothing period), we have egyptian galabiyah, sudanese galabiya, libyian or morocan galabiyahs, but do we have a 'Canadian or American' Galabiyah?  i would argue that we should have Canadian/American lose fitting clothes, but to silence the critics, lets keep it at Cnd/Am Galabiya!  Dr. Abdul hakim Jackson rightfully stated that regardless of the authenticity of the National of Islam, they have forever carved in the American culture the Black Bow-Tie and black suit as their 'culture'.
i think its time for us, american/canadian born individuals to start adapting a cutlure that respects our deen and adopts the tastes and styles of north america.  a good example is this discussion board.  its an avenue to discuss islamic issues (which can be equated with hallaqas, dars, naseeha, ijtimah circles, etc) using technology that has been created by north americans, who may not be muslims.

so begins the roads to history.  any travellers?

w'salams

[wlm]  kza!!!! :)

nice to c ya here brutha.. u be late.. i posted up that article here last night after i read it, in the Taqwa library. If anyone else would like to read it it's here at [this link]    I strongly agree with u and dr tariq ramadan in creating a "muslim culture" here in n. america.  I keep seeing our kids getting sucked into non-islamic life and the reason is because we have no ALTERNATIVE for them. i mean it's not human nature not to have fun or enjoy yourself.. and what they see as islam is austere, serious and a hard life.

when i think about it the islamic youth life i remember is sleepover's at the masjid.. eid parties...going to myna conferences... hanging out with my friends at the mosque...going horsebackriding  and camping in the mountains with the imam!!  and in between all that i grew islamically and learned alot and started to love islam. and it is this love that carried me this far to learn the details and more...  i'm really worried about the kids today....their memories seem to be political fighting at the mosque, being forced to go and memorize, people telling them everything they're doing is haram etc...

it's really quite sad... and the worse thing is when we (ie the survivors of the 1st generation) want to change the way things are done..try to bring these kids back to islam.. all we get are obstacles from the elders!!  so what do we do...

ahh welll.. anyways ahlan wa sahlan kza, ana saeedah anta huna!!!   :-/
