Iranian women look West for a nose
From Michael Theodoulou in Tehran

ELENA BABAEI, a brunette with blue eyes and a superbly sculpted nose, cheerfully admitted that nature alone was not responsible for her striking looks. “My nose used to be a little bit big and had some deviation,” the 28-year-old economist said, “but now I’m very happy with it. I also had my chin done to make it harmonise with my nose.” She turned to show her perfect profile to full effect. “I have many friends who have had the same done.”

Ms Babaei is one of a fast-growing number of young Iranian women who are relying on the surgeon’s scalpel to enhance their looks. Their noses, in particular, appear to be a cause for insecurity.

“If you compare Iranian women to Europeans, Iranians have better eyes and eyebrows,” Mohammad Ghanaatpisheh, one of Tehran’s leading plastic surgeons, said, “but the Europeans have better noses and chins, so if we can change their noses and chins, their faces will be better than before and better than the Europeans.”

Women say that because only their faces can be exposed in public under Iran’s Islamic dress code, they are determined to ensure that they look as good as possible.

The boom in rhinoplasty has accompanied a relaxation in the dress code since the reformist President Khatami was swept to power five years ago with promises to liberalise the Islamic system. Hemlines are shorter, scarves brighter and make-up more daring. Non-prescription coloured contact lenses have also become a fad. Ms Babaei, born with brown eyes, has sets in blue and green.

As yet, there is little demand for breast enhancement or reduction, according to plastic surgeons, because there are still few opportunities to see women’s bodies in public. Many women keep in shape at women-only gyms, however, while women’s sports, frowned upon by Iran’s old guard, are enjoying a renaissance.

Nose jobs have become so fashionable that Iranian women are happy to sport their post-surgical bandages in public. Urban legend has it that some aspiring women even venture out wearing plasters without having had the operation.

The cost, between $500 and $2,000 (£350 and £1,400), is cheap compared with the West; the price depends largely on the surgeon’s reputation and experience.

Men are also joining the quest for nasal excellence. “Most of our customers are women between 18 and 30,” said Mahbubeh Shishehgar, 27, who works as a receptionist and technician at Dr Ghanaatpisheh’s clinic in an upmarket suburb of north Tehran, “but about one in ten are men.”

Her own exquisite nose is a splendid advertisement to those in the clinic’s busy waiting room. She had no medical need for surgery. “I had my nose changed for aesthetic reasons. It was a bit big,” she said.

Like many of Iran’s 100 or so registered plastic surgeons, Dr Ghanaatpisheh honed his skills in the most testing of circumstances: operating on often horrifically disfigured casualties of the eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s.

As-salaamu alaikum,

i also dont know y they do this!!!  If they hav no problems with their body and the way it functions, i dont c y ppl care soo much abt physical looks!!! Allah (swt) has made every 1 beautiful in their own ways...some ppl think big noes's are nice others prefer small. (if they all get surgery they'll look pretty similar)

Its the inside that counts isn't it??? :(

take care,
w'salaam

Society sets the strangest gold standards for a woman's body >:(  How is it possible for someone to have a better nose or better  eyebrows than somebody else?  The funny thing is that if we were all born with exactly the same so-called perfect looks, then people would probably have surgery to try to distinguish themselves from everyone else.  Until society starts judging people by their character instead of by their looks, women and men who feel the pressure to conform with everybody else's ideals are going to keep paying thousands of dollars to change their appearance.

I think all too often we blame so called "society" for our own weaknesses and insecurities. I don't mean to downplay the pressure, at the same time Allah gave us all something called "Aql", intelligence, and if we don't use it to make proper judgements, then its our own fault  >:( Who cares what standards some Kaffir made to determine who is pretty and who is not? when we know very well to Allah the most important thing is *Taqwa*.... But sadly enuff too many Muslims are looking westward, letting the blind lead em to their own destruction!
May Allah safeguard us from our own stupidity (Amin).
