I was thinking about going to the beach, but...

I have not been to the beach in a while and summer will be coming soon.  I was wondering if anybody knows if going to the beach is haram, if it is not are there any restrictions, rules, regulations, dress codes that I have to follow?  Sorry, if this question seems silly.

[slm], my brother.

The Beach, or going to the beach, is not haram in itself.  However, the things you may encounter while on your visit may be haram for you.  If you go during the day, and especially in the summer, you will find that there are a lot of 3/4 naked people (I say 3/4 naked instead of half naked, because way more than half of their body is uncovered.) and looking at these things is definetely forbidden for the believers.

I know how you must feel, though.  I love the beach, and so does my wife.  But since I embraced Islam, I have found that it is practically impossible for me to go there during the day, unless it's a really really cold day, or raining or something like that.  Otherwise, I don't even take a chance.

However, we do visit the beach at night, when the beach is almost deserted.  Of course its not practical to go swimming at night, but at least we get to enjoy the beautiful view, mashaAllah, the fresh air, and the sound of the waves.  Alhamdulillah, this has put a totally different perspective of the beach itself:  it is easier to see Allah's Power and Might, and His Mercy toward mankind, without being distracted by the nakedness and shamelessness of people.

May Allah (SWT) give you enjoyment in the good things in this life, and may He reward you enormously for abstaining from that which displeases Him, ameen.

Your Brother,

Othman.

restrictions hmm, I would say  the beach is a beach its just the same as going into the city or market where there is great fitnah.
Ok so you'd have people swimming and not dressed right, yet thats the same in any warm weather climate. Where I live people bathe in their gardens as well, mad Brits !

Try and keep your gaze down when your in an environment like that.
Another point bro I think a restriction would be your own physical apperance as well,  say for example, somebody pumps iron, has his stomach like a washboard, bit of a gillette look then I think would be haraam as well, if his intention is to flirt, its like a venus fly trap attracting flys, "death and destruction".

I know some blokes who train only to look good when they go for thier holiday on the beach.

May Allah save us from such misfortune. Ameen.

It is true that you will find naked people in just about any place under warm weather.  However, a question arises: do you need to be there, or can you avoid it?  And if you can avoid it, shouldn't you?

Allah (SWT) ordered us: "Do not go near Zinah"

Let us not forget that there are in fact different types of Zinah (of the eyes, the hands, etc)  I acknowledge the fact that you are telling the brother to keep his eyes down (mashaAllah), however we must keep in mind that as humans, we are weak, and exposing ourselves to such fitnah unncecessarily can prove truly dangerous (for no one is inmune to the whispers of Shaytaan) and does not seem very advisable.

Allah knows best.

Thank you for your help Othman and BroHanif.  :) Probably my best option is to not go at all.  Zinah would be in every direction.  If I was looking towards the ground all day, beach balls and frisbees would keep hitting me in the back of the head. :'(

there is the problem of nearly naked people - but my family and i go to the beach sometimes.  what we do is get there really early before there are any people there, and we find a part of the beach that's really far away from where the cars are parked etc, and this part usually stays quiet during the day.  if it gets really busy and yucky we just leave

[slm],
Hi brothers and sisters.  I want to share with you my beach experience-my first as a  :-) hijabi.  I went to Santa Barbara, CA, to visit my Muslim "cousin".  It was January, but it is pretty warm down there at that time, and she lives really close to the beach, so we went.  3 hijabi girls, wearing jeans, shirts, long sweaters, and hijabs, walking on the beach.  People thought we were crazy, but we were having fun.  We even jumped in the ocean for a few minutes.  This was truely one of the best days of my life, alhamdulillah, I learned that wearing my hijab wouldn't take away from one of my favorite things-the ocean.  I want to just share with you that the ocean is awesome, even fully dressed and in hijab.  So go have fun!   :-)

asalamu alailkum

When my in-laws and I go to Maracas beach in Trinidad (he he he, nice tropical Caribbean REAL beach),

The guys always wear a T-Shirt and short past the knee, and the girls wear what they would regularly wear, except jeans isn't too smart since it gets heavy.

To a certain extent, a little cling is unavoidable for both genders, so dress thick and you gotta know how far is comfortable to you.

As well, in Trinidad, its not like everyone's crawling all over the beach, you kind of settle down and claim a good area for yourself to play sports, draw in the sand, and even to swim, so its very private.  Although this is selfish, the good thing is that many other women are half-naked, astag'ferAllah, so the women of our party don't even get a second glance.

Haram is everywhere, even in muslim countries sometimes, o use your discretiona and do your thang! asalamu alaikum. abdullah,.

Here is a Fatwah:
Islam-QA.com
~~~
Question:
In Egypt, people go to Alexandria to spend the summer there. On the beaches there are thousands of women who are virtually naked, and men mix freely with women. I am a man with a beard; is it permissible for me to go there and sit by the sea, or not?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
If the situation is as described, it is not permissible for a Muslim to go to these places, for fear of fitnah (temptation) and so as to avoid the places where it is to be found – unless he is one of those who are able to remove the evil things that are there, because they have the authority and the knowledge of sharee’ah, and are able to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil.
