Salaams,

Ok I know this post is about websites but there isn't a forum yet for techy issues or gadget issues.

So my question is whos got a portable MP3 player ? I'm considering buying an MP3 player itself or buying a Sony MiniDiscman.  Yet I'm confused to which one would offer me more, I think they are both good.

Price wise I'm not too bothered I belive in if you buy something its gotta be good otherwise don't bother. But its gotta be light and perhaps shockproof, usage at gym primarily.

Can anyone help please ?

Jajakallah.

hmm...I dont know too much about midi players, but with mp3 there's the Creative Nomad IIc, Diamond Rio, others like the Samsung Yepp, and the Nike PSA - and no it doesnt stand for Pakistani student's assoc.  :P  They'll run you anywhere from $100 (Nomad) to $200.. Pratically all non-cd mp3 players are shockproof as it uses Solid State Media (no moving parts). I'd recommend the Creative Nomad. I have one and it's pretty good, it even has an FM tuner and voice recording.

Here's some more info:

You can get it for $105 @ buy.com :

Smart media cards for it have dropped in price lately. You can get 64 meg
cards for $20 @ http://shop3.outpost.com/product/2761723

If you convert the mp3s into wma, you can fit an entire CD on a 64 mb card.
hmm..how about one of those cd-based mp3 players?

w'alaykum as salam

[slm] As an aside, we are using a SONY Minidisk to record lectures and I have to say it is pretty awesome... You can record like 160 minutes continously in mono and 80 mins stereo... it's really beautiful using the microphone you can be anywhere in the room and still get everything!!

When I left my last job, they presented me with an MP3 player as a leaving gift.  Masha Allah, it is fantastic.  I bought a copy of the Holy Quran on CD-ROM, and so now can listed to it anywhere, alhamdulillah.

I have a Samsung Yepp.  It comes with a 64K built in memory, which gives you about an hour's worth of listening material (still not enough to get the whole of surah Al Baqarah!!).  It also has the facility for a plug-in 64K flash card.

MP3 is cool for pre-recorded stuff: with no moving parts, you can listen whilst walking, cycling, whatever.  However, as Sr Jannah points out, I think the versatility of being able to record your own material makes the mini-disc a serious piece of kit.

As a further aside, does anyone know if it is possible to take a "Real Audio" type file and convert it to MP3 format?  There are so many talks and things on the 'net on Real Audio, I would love to be able to listen to them on my MP3 player too.

I'd go for the Minidisc. I'm working in a  radio station at the moment and the thing is just great. It's small, compact, brilliant quality..and and and..

I think you can convert formats in WinAmp. I'm not too sure though. I've only done MP3 into Wav.
