surahs of yesterday

Salaams,

When I were a wee bonnie lad I went to the mosque and learnt quite a few surats and hadiths. Sadly, as time grew on I've become more busy in other trivial matters and became  neglectful in remembering em but not exactly forgotten my surahs/hadiths .

Does anyone else have this problem ?? If so what learning methods do you use to keep the quran/hadiths alive in your heart once learnt ?

Insha-allah I'm starting to learn the surahs again but I feel so dissapointed in myself for forgetting em, sigh.

Asalaam alaikum,

What I suggest you do is make a CD of these surahs and play them in your car on your way to work.  Insha'Allah that should help.

Assalaamu alaikum,

The best approach would be to continuously recite the surahs. Set out some time each day to read and memorize the Quran. Then recite what you have memorized in your prayers, in your car, while walking, when doing nothing in particular, etc.

Listening to Quran CD is also a very good idea. However, don't rely on it solely. First read the surah because otherwise we tend to mix up the letters and tend to follow the tune instead. Once you have memorized from reading, then listening is hepful (not failsafe) to retaining it.

We have to be constant and regular in the recitation, which is kinda the bottom line.

Wasalaam.

I had the same problem with not going back and practicing my old surahs i had memorized from my youth and subhanALLAH, when I did go back and read the Quran, i noticed a LOT of mistakes in Tajweed. The best thing is to every now and then reread everything that you already have memorized to smooth out the edges. You dont want to end up reciting like 4 olds recite their alphabets...ENEMENOPEE ;D LOL...

The surahs are hardest to forget if you constantly recite them to yourself at various times of the day.  For example, you can practice what you have memorized by praying with the surahs that you need to commit to memory.  Of course, if you are memorizing a long surah, like surat al-baqara, it is not practical to recite the entire thing while you are praying.  Instead, just recite thoses verses that you are working on.  Also, you can try reciting to yourself when you first wake up and you are changing your clothes and at night, while you are trying to fall asleep.  Please don't be discouraged if you have forgotten certain verses or you can't recite them perfectly.  It turns out that with memorization, it is normal to keep forgetting the first few times that we try to recite what we want to learn.  It is from constant repition and practice that information sticks.  Also, it is helpful that you make your memorization process an active one.  You can do this by trying to understand the meanings of the verses and not merely just memorizing words.  You can also write down what you have memorized.  Writing down the verses helps to incorporate them into your brain.  However, I recommend using a notebook for this and not loose-leaf paper which tends to get lost easily.  We don't want papers with God's verses all over the place.   :)

I've heard that's not good from one opinion because you can't pay full attention to the recitation. asalmu alaikum. abdullah,.
